Our guide, Jose, was very knowledgeable and friendly. It was a very interesting and educational experience. At the end of the tour we asked Jose to suggest a good sea food restaurant. He not only recommended a wonderful restaurant but called in advance to make sure they were open and dropped us off at their doorstep. He definitely went the extra mile.

The weather didn't cooperate for us for views from the volcano but the guide was awesome. As was the rest of the tour! I admit, the weather lulled me into starting to doze in the car (not our guides fault) but my boyfriend talked to him the whole time and was so impressed!

We visited Ponta Delgada via cruise ship. Jose, our guide picked us up right at the port and after picking up one other couple we traveled into the mountains to view the beautiful lakes and waterfall of the area. We finished up at a nice black sand beach where we saw a few surfers riding the waves.

On the flip side, a potential consideration is the weather—since views depend heavily on conditions, cloud cover or fog might limit visibility, especially at higher altitudes. But if you’re after a balanced mix of scenic stops and local insights, this tour appears to deliver.

This experience suits nature lovers, curious explorers, and those wanting a stress-free way to see island highlights in just a few hours. If you’re traveling with a group or prefer guided transportation that takes the guesswork out of rural roads, this tour offers a lot of value.

Our guide, Jose, was terrific! He was friendly, easy to talk to, and had a wide display of knowledge, from geographic to vegetation and farming, historical and political. And of course the volcanoes and their impact past and present.

Jose was an incredible guide. He took us to spots we would not be able to go to in a regular van. His knowledge of the island was magnificent. Highly reccomend

Tour guide Jose Maria Santos was an excellent host. His pride in his culture and sense of humor made the tour lighthearted and fun. The fog lifted just enough for us to view the spectacular Lagoa Do Fogo. We visited several swimming areas, including Praia De Santa Barbara Beach. Jose also brought us to a waterfall and a picnic site with fumarole cooking areas. There is so much you can learn about a place from a good tour guide that would be hard to know otherwise, including good restaurant recommendations. Our tour with Jose was time well-spent!

The tour’s small group size—capped at six travelers—ensures a more personal experience, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and take photos. Plus, reviews consistently praise the guide’s enthusiasm and knowledge, which enriches the journey far beyond just looking out the window.

In-Depth Look at the Itinerary

Half-Day 4x4 Tour to Lagoa do Fogo - In-Depth Look at the Itinerary

Stop 1: Salto do Cabrito

The tour kicks off with a stop at Salto do Cabrito, a refreshing waterfall nestled along rural roads. Travelers love this spot for its photogenic scenery and tranquil vibe. Since the route can vary based on weather, some days might offer more lush greenery or more dramatic waterfalls.

Reviewers mention that this is a quick 20-minute stop, but it’s a worthwhile way to stretch your legs and snap some pictures.

Stop 2: Lagoa do Fogo

The main event is the Lagoa do Fogo, a stunning volcanic crater lake and a designated Nature Reserve since 1974. It’s 15,000 years old and features endemic flora, fumaroles, and hot springs. The caldera is notably the smallest on the island, but its natural purity and limited human intervention make it a highlight.

Had a great tour, learned so much about the island; its history, culture and formation. Friendly and informative. We were able to enter areas that private vehicles were not permitted avoiding crowds and saving time.

Jose was very knowledgeable for every aspect of the tour. The views are breathtaking! Jose took us on routes that are definitely off the beaten track which made the tour very interesting. Fogo volcano is a must see and we would recommend this tour to everyone visiting Sao Miguel.

Jose was a wonderful guide! It was off season and he took the time to adapt the tour to what we would be able to see on the day (despite the fog). He was so knowledgeable and really went the extra mile- would highly recommend!

Guests love the breathtaking views, though some mention that fog or clouds can obscure the scenery—something to keep in mind if clear vistas are your priority. The guide’s expertise plays a critical role here, as they can explain the volcanic history and ecological importance of this protected area. The 2-minute stop here is enough to appreciate its significance and snap a few photos.

Stop 3: Ribeira Grande

Next, the tour takes you into Ribeira Grande, a charming town with a historic center and a lovely public garden. This 30-minute walk is appreciated for its relaxed vibe and local flavor. Some reviews note the stream running through the town adds to its peaceful atmosphere.

Stop 4: Praia do Areal de Santa Barbara

Finally, a quick 15-minute visit to Santa Barbara Beach, known as the surf capital of the island. It’s a black sand beach that offers a different kind of beauty—ideal for relaxing or watching surfers ride the waves. It’s a nice way to wind down the tour and perhaps dip your toes in the Atlantic.

José María was the absolute BEST guide!! Could not recommend him more. He is Incredibly knowledgeable on the history of Portugal and the Azores, he is funny and very personable. He is also very patient and is willing to take all the pictures you may want. Best your guide on the island, you will be very happy!!!

Great Tour that exceeded all our expectations. Our guide, Jose Maria Santos, was born and raised in the Azores, was very knowledgeable and seemed excited to share his island. The Azores is a group of volcanic islands. The views from the top of the volcano were breathtaking and there were several areas producing steam as well as hot springs. The island natives can even use steam vents for cooking. We can not recommend Carpe Diem Dream Tours more highly. This was the best excursion of our cruise.

We had THE best day with Jose. We only wish we have booked other tours with him. He took us to some amazing spots, took loads of photos for us and knew EVERYTHING about his island and talked about it with such infectious pride. We had the best day of entire trip on this tour- we honestly cannot recommend him enough and cannot wait to go back to the island and do a tour with him again.

Many travelers highlight the guide’s dedication—Jose, in particular, receives high praise for his enthusiasm, local knowledge, and willingness to go the extra mile, such as recommending and calling ahead to good restaurants.

The limited group size makes for a more intimate experience, and with most bookings happening about a month in advance, it seems popular among those who want to plan ahead.

We had visited the Azores on a trip across the Atlantic and looked up alternatives to ship tours provided in view of price. Found this one with Jose, who met us early along with 2 others and ended up with an amazing experience lasting 4.5hours. He is so enthusiastic about his island and had so much knowledge to impart to us. The off road was super and saw a lovely waterfall that the tour buses would not have been able to visit. It has been one of the places on my bucket list and will certainly try to visit again. So much more to see. The botanical gardens with thermal pools etc were beautiful. Everyone one very friendly and cafe prices very good!!! Thank you sooooo much Jose

Jose showed up right on time. In our four hours we saw an incredible amount of the island. Because he had a 4WD vehicle we were able to go where most other tours probably couldn't go. I would recommend Jose to everyone.
Elena S
Tour very interesting thanks to José's explanations. I even adapted the tour so that we could see volcanic activity, which we had not been able to see the previous day due to bad weather.Auto-translated
