Exploring Matanuska Glacier with White Raven Tours: An Honest Look

If you’re after an unforgettable Alaskan adventure, this small-group hike on the Matanuska Glacier might be just what you need.

We’ve come across plenty of glacier tours, but what makes this one stand out is its intimate size—limiting groups to just 14 travelers—and the combination of glacier exploration with local honey and wine tasting. It’s a mix of adventure, education, and a touch of local flavor, all rolled into one roughly 8.5-hour day.

Glacier hike was great experience. We had really good time hiking on glacier. Our tour guide Dan was extremely nice guy and gave us lots of information about the tour. Walking on glacier with spectacular view made our tour a memorable one. Also small stop at honey tasting was good.

The glacier was AMAZING! The crew at glacier that guides you were super nice and basically rockstars. I will say, the drive there is pretty tough. It’s a lot of winding, beat up bumpy roads, and if your driver hits those turns going too fast then slams on the breaks like we had, bring some Dramamine…but she was very nice! The shop for the local honey and wine tasting is a cool little place. Not a true tasting but worth the stop! We didn’t get to try the wine, but the honey was really good and the woman making the coffee was very sweet. This glacier hike is a once in a lifetime opportunity you won’t want to miss.

What we really appreciate about this experience is how accessible it is—no special skills or equipment required, since crampons and snow pants are provided—and how much it offers in terms of personal attention and safety. Plus, the opportunity to walk among giant ice formations and hear the glacier’s natural cracking sounds creates a truly immersive experience.

The inclusion of local honey and wine at the end adds a charming, authentic touch to a tour that otherwise feels quite premium.

However, a word of caution: the drive to the glacier is about two hours each way, and some reviews mention that the roads can be bumpy and winding. That’s something to consider if you’re prone to motion sickness or prefer shorter travel times. This tour is best suited for those who want a full-day, active experience with plenty of opportunities to learn and see some of Alaska’s most iconic scenery.

If you’re comfortable with moderate physical activity and looking for a well-rounded glacier adventure that combines scenery, expert guides, and local treats, this trip could be perfect. It’s particularly appealing for travelers who appreciate small groups and personalized service.

The Glacier Itself

The highlight of this tour, of course, is the Matanuska Glacier. It’s one of Alaska’s most stunning Valley Glaciers—massive, vibrant blue, and constantly changing. Visitors often describe it as awe-inspiring, with some reviewers noting how their guides helped them appreciate the glacier’s features and history.

One reviewer shared, “The glacier was AMAZING! The crew was super nice and basically rockstars,” capturing how professional and personable the guides are. Another mentioned walking through a crevasse and sampling glacial water, which sounds like a genuinely memorable experience. The variety of ice formations and the sound of cracking ice add a layer of natural drama that photos just can’t fully capture.

Tour operator was very nice and professional and the glacier walk itself was amazing. The honey and wine shop is cute too.

The 2 hour drive was beautiful and our driver Kim was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Our glacier guide Bennett was amazing. He was fun and you could tell he enjoyed his job. Our 12 year old son has decided he wants to come back when he’s older and be a glacier guide. The glacier hike was long and you needed to focus but the spikes helped and every step was even more beautiful. I would not recommend for anyone who struggles with balance.

Great tour of the enormous glacier, we learned a lot of interesting facts from Frank our glacier tour guide. Frank was patient with our group as some people had an easier time with the terrain than others. Things to note, it is cold there even in July, wear layers including a winter jacket, wear hiking shoes or boots even though they give you crampons, and know that the terrain isn’t even. All that being said, we loved the hike and would do it again. BTW, my husband and I are both over 60 yrs old. The honey and “wine” tasting were definitely not the highlight of the trip.

The Experience on the Ice

Participants walk between glacial walls, often close enough to marvel at the fantastic natural ice formations. The guided hike is designed to be accessible—no specialist equipment needed, as crampons and snow pants are provided. This means you don’t have to be an experienced hiker or climber to enjoy it, but you should be in moderate physical shape since the terrain can be uneven and bumpy, as some reviews point out.

The guides are trained to keep everyone safe, even on tricky patches, and many reviews praise their patience and expertise. One reviewer said, “Our guide kept all 9 of us safe and informed the entire time,” which speaks volumes about the professionalism you can expect.

The Road to the Glacier

The journey to the glacier is part of the adventure. The drive along the Glenn Highway is described as scenic, with some reviewers calling it “beautiful.” However, it’s worth noting that the drive takes around two hours each way, and the roads can be winding and rough. If you’re sensitive to motion or prefer shorter travel, this might be a consideration.

One reviewer mentioned, “The drive there is pretty tough…a lot of winding, beat-up roads,” but still felt it was worth it for the experience. If you’re prone to car sickness, bringing some motion sickness remedies could help make the drive more comfortable.

The Itinerary Breakdown

The tour is structured into three main parts:

  • Stop 1: Matanuska Glacier — The main event, where you’ll spend about four hours exploring the ice fields with your guide. You’ll get close to incredible formations, learn about how glaciers form, and hear the sounds of moving ice. Some guests have even walked through crevasses, adding an element of adventure.

  • Stop 2: Glenn Highway Scenic Drive — This part takes around four hours and offers incredible views along the scenic highway running parallel to the glacier. It’s a chance for photo ops and to trace the glaciers’ history in the landscape.

  • Stop 3: Palmer — A quick 30-minute stop in the charming town of Palmer, where you can pick up coffee or snacks for lunch. It’s a relaxed end to the day, and many reviews mention how friendly and picturesque the town is.

The Extras: Honey and Wine Tasting

A unique feature of this tour is the local honey and wine tasting at the end. While reviews mention the honey as “cute” and the wine as brief, most agree it’s a nice touch that adds a relaxed, local flavor to the trip. It’s not a full-blown tasting tour but a brief stop that gives you a taste of Alaskan local produce.

What’s Included and What’s Not

Included are bottled water, snacks, crampons, snow pants, and an experienced guide. This covers most essentials for the hike, making it a good value considering the effort and expertise involved. Lunch isn’t included, so packing some snacks or a light lunch for yourself is recommended—especially if you want to avoid hunger after the hike.

The Experience From Reviews

The majority of reviews highlight how knowledgeable and fun guides make the trip memorable. One reviewer raved about “Madison,” noting that she made the experience “so fun,” while another praised the professionalism of the guides and the safety focus.

Many people highlighted the stunning scenery—the blue ice, the size of the glacier, and the overall sense of awe. One said, “The glacier is an amazing sight—I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” which encapsulates how special this landscape is.

Some reviews touch on the drive, with most saying it’s worth the trip. “The 2-hour drive was beautiful,” and “Our driver was extremely friendly and knowledgeable.” That said, a few noted that the roads can be bumpy, and the drive may be tiring.

The Downside

A couple of less enthusiastic reviews point out that the glacier in summer can be quite different from winter—more rocks and debris, which might disappoint some expecting pristine white ice. Also, the demanding terrain isn’t suited for everyone—if you have mobility issues or are not comfortable on uneven surfaces, it’s worth considering.

On top of that, some commented on the tip solicitation at check-in, which is not a standard practice and can feel a bit off. It’s good to be aware that tipping is expected but should be based on service quality, not expectation.
