Kealakekua Bay Afternoon Snorkel: Family Fun on the Kona Coast

If you’re considering a snorkel adventure on the Big Island, this Kealakekua Bay cruise from Fair Wind Cruises might be just the ticket. With hundreds of positive reviews and a solid 5.0 rating from travelers, it’s clear this tour hits the mark for many. But as with all experiences, it’s worth digging into what you can truly expect, so you can decide if it fits your travel style.

Two things we love about this trip: first, the chance to see marine life in such a pristine setting—many reviews rave about the incredible underwater scenery and frequent dolphin sightings. Second, the boat itself isn’t just a vessel; it’s a mini adventure with fun features like water slides and diving platforms that add an extra layer of enjoyment, especially if you’re traveling with kids or just love a bit of water-based fun.

Excellent trip. Snorkeling was great, with lots of variety, as usual. Friendly, safety-minded staff. Beautiful scenery. Well-run company.
Stephanie C
Great experience. Timing was perfect. Got to see hump back whales, and dolphins, and other great landmarks on the way out. The snorkeling and boat was so fun and kid friendly.
April B
This was a great experience for all of us. We had our grandsons, 8 and 11, who were new to snorkeling. The crew walked them through everything and then encouraged them in all the activities. The gal watching the slides was so sweet and encouraging to the 8yo when he was nervous about the slide, never getting short with him when he kept backing out after getting on the slide. Once he finally did it she cheered just as hard as we did! She also patiently “judged” all the “races” between us and the boys. All the crew were patient and kind and made sure to point out all the wildlife. All in all it was a great time for all of us!

One potential consideration is the price point of about $144 per person, which includes a good amount of amenities and experiences. For some, it’s worth every penny; for others, you may want to compare what’s included here with similar tours. Also, note that hotel pickup and drop-off aren’t included, so you’ll need to get yourself to the meeting point, which is straightforward but worth planning for.

This tour seems best suited for those who want a relaxed yet active day out, with a focus on marine encounters, family-friendly activities, and scenic coastline views. If you value knowledgeable guides, a lively boat experience, and the chance to see dolphins or whales (in winter), this might be perfect for you.
