Explore Florence from La Spezia: A Practical Guide to the Shore Excursion
If you’re docking in La Spezia and looking to squeeze a little Tuscany into your day, this Florence shore excursion might be just what you need. It’s designed for travelers who want a straightforward, well-organized way to see some of Italy’s most celebrated sights without the hassle of planning every detail themselves.
While it’s not a full-blown tour with elaborate guided commentary, it offers enough structure to get a good taste of Florence’s highlights — and, importantly, it guarantees you’ll get back to your ship on time.
What’s not what I expected. To be dropped off at a bus station and then given directions to the museum on our own. Then to wait for another guide to hand us our tickets, and there was a big mixed up on our time to go in, with the guide arguing with the museum personnel, so he told us to wait in the line, and proceeded to leave. Then we had a map to get back to the bus station.
The bus left promptly and arrived back at port with plenty of time before our departure. It was low season, so the bus was not crowded and we enjoyed a more personal tour with our guide Alessandro. We elected not to pay to enter any of the main museums and had a sufficient amount of time to walk around, have lunch/gelato and see the main sights. The company provides access to an audio guide you can use on your phone as you walk which was helpful (bring headphones). The guide was very clear on meeting points and times and we had no problems with the group as a whole.
The walk from bus drop off to the attractions is over a mile and should be disclosed. WiFi was not available on the bus as promised. Bus was comfortable and clean.
What we really like about this experience is the convenient transportation—a comfortable, air-conditioned bus with onboard Wi-Fi, making the journey smoother and more enjoyable. Plus, the option to choose between a transfer-only service or a guided tour is a thoughtful touch, catering to different travel styles.
On the flip side, some reviews mention that the bus seats are a bit cramped and uncomfortable, which is something to consider if you’re sensitive to long hours on a tight bus.
Ultimately, this excursion works best if you’re after a time-efficient way to visit Florence and don’t mind a fast-paced schedule. Families, solo travelers, or couples who are happy with a mix of self-guided time and brief guided stops will find it fits quite well.
But if you prefer a more leisurely, in-depth exploration, you might want to consider other options. Still, for about $56, it offers a solid balance of convenience and value.
Great tour. Although it was supposed to be primarily transportation our guide, Allesandro, went above and beyond with aiding in finding places and providing information. We wished we had more time, there was so much interesting to see.
This was our first “3rd party” excursion and was impressed how organized everything was. Our guide Alessandro was fantastic- he gave us a primer on the bus and then allowed just enough time for us to enjoy the sites
The tour was as expected and our guide Alessandro was excellent! He was knowledgeable, courtesy and friendly! We made it back to our cruise ship on time and definitely recommend this to other cruise customers if they are looking for a more reasonable pricing for these excursions!

The journey is about 2 hours each way, so expect some time on the bus—though, with onboard Wi-Fi, it can be a little more comfortable.

Meeting Point and Departure
You’ll gather at Largo Michele Fiorillo, just outside the cruise terminal, with staff clearly identifiable in green T-shirts. It’s recommended to arrive at least 15 minutes early, which is crucial since latecomers won’t be refunded and may miss the bus.
The staff is helpful, but reviews note that the initial coordination can sometimes be a bit chaotic, especially when trying to figure out which bus to board.
Transport and Comfort
The bus itself is described as a comfortable GT coach, air-conditioned with Wi-Fi, ideal for a long ride. However, some reviewers mention the seats are small, with little legroom and no cushioning—so if you’re tall or prone to discomfort, pack an extra cushion or prepare for a bumpy ride.
Great tour! Lots of free time to explore on your own or walk with the guide to highlights of Florence! Alessandro was a wonderful guide. He was funny and navigated a big group through the crowds of the city. Highly recommend this tour.
Transport was on time, directions provided were clear on the return to bus at the end of our free time. Overall a great experience.
Right on time and the guide made sure single person was taken care of. Her name was LUMI and she even came to each of us asking about our day, what she could do to help. She did this from first thing in the morning until last moment at night. She also did this with a smile and warmth. She was amazing!!
One reviewer compared it to a bus from “the previous century,” highlighting the dated feel and uncomfortable seats, so manage your expectations accordingly.
The Stops in Florence
Once in Florence, the experience is mainly about catching the main sights and having free time to explore. The itinerary includes:
- The Duomo: A must-see, with its iconic marble dome and bell tower. You’ll get a good view of this Gothic masterpiece from outside, and the guide will point out key features.
- Ponte Vecchio: The medieval stone bridge lined with shops is a photographer’s favorite, and you’ll have time to walk across, soak in the views, and shop for jewelry and souvenirs.
- Piazza della Signoria: This political hub features the Palazzo Vecchio and impressive statues, making it an ideal spot for photos and soaking in Florence’s vibrant life.
- Central Market: A foodie’s paradise, where you can sample local delicacies and buy fresh ingredients or leather goods outside.
Guided or Self-Guided
You can opt for a guided tour, which includes a ticket to the Galleria dell’Accademia—home to Michelangelo’s David. Many reviews highlight that this is a real highlight, with the sculpture often described as breathtaking.
The guide will provide insights into Michelangelo’s creative process, and the museum houses other Renaissance artworks and musical instruments, making it a richer experience if you choose the guided ticket.
We only the booked the transfer. Great value for being able to spend 5 hours in Florence. Lumi, the coordinator did a fantastic job on the trip to and from Florence. Highly recommend.
This tour was awesome and the guide was awesome. A very relaxing ride to Florence and then the guide walked us around Florence so we could experience as much as possible. She was very knowledgeable. Also had guaranteed return to port on time. Would highly recommend this tour.
Great tour. Very organized. Fantastic guide. I loved the maps and directions given out. She also gave us a great restaurant recommendation.
Alternatively, if you prefer to explore on your own, you’ll receive a free map and have the freedom to wander and enjoy the city at your own pace. Reviews like that of one traveler, who appreciated the “well-paced” tour and the ability to explore independently, show that this flexibility is valued.
Free Time and Food
The tour includes ample free time—around four and a half hours in Florence—giving you the chance to shop, take photos, or enjoy lunch at your leisure. You’re responsible for your own expenses here, so budgeting for a meal or snacks is recommended. Many reviewers loved the chance to enjoy local dishes at the Central Market, describing it as a highlight.
Return and Timeliness
The biggest selling point of this tour is the guaranteed return to your cruise ship. Some reviews mention that despite traffic or delays, the staff was diligent in ensuring everyone made it back on time, which is reassuring if you’re on a tight schedule. Be aware that punctuality is emphasized, so sticking to the meeting times is crucial.
The Value and Considerations

At roughly $56 per person, this excursion offers a lot for travelers wanting a quick taste of Florence without the hassle of navigating public transport or organizing a private guide. For the price, you get transportation, some guided stops, a free Florence map, and the peace of mind that you’ll return to your cruise on schedule.
was by far our best excursion. we tend to just use the excursions offered by the cruise line. We are on, but wanted a different experience and I would choose the excursion over and over again. Friends of our joined us and said they had done this excursion a couple years ago and it never disappoints and I agree. The guide was knowledgeable, shared his love for Italy his history that he knew and recent pop culture, which was fun to listen to he and the driver were very skilled at getting us to the Amalfi coast, which was alone. Impressive, but the sites were beautiful. The culture is amazing and the stop in Sorrento for lunch at La Laterna left us all wanting to go back to vacation in Sorrento…
The tour guide walked us to the center of the square or tourist area, told us we could meet her for lunch at 1:15, but we could not find the restaurant. The tour guide told us what time to meet back at the bus and if you wanted to follow her you could or you could explore by yourself.
However, some critiques relate to comfort—small seats, heat, and the overall long drive might not appeal to everyone. If you’re sensitive to bus travel or prefer a more relaxed pace, you might find yourself wishing for more time in Florence or a more comfortable ride.
Reviews also reveal that the pace is quite quick, with many noting that they felt rushed at times. For travelers wanting deep immersion or leisurely exploration, this might not be the best fit. But if quick sightseeing and convenience are your priorities, this tour hits the mark.
