Exploring Lake Como: A Small-Group Day Tour Review
If you’re dreaming of a day immersed in the beauty of Lake Como, this Varenna & Bellagio Full-Day Tour offers a well-structured glimpse into this renowned Italian lake’s highlights. While I haven’t personally taken this exact tour, I’ve read through plenty of reviews and details to give you an honest idea of what to expect.
Two aspects we really appreciate about this experience are the thoughtful balance between organized sightseeing and free time—allowing you to soak in the scenery without feeling rushed—and the small group size, which enhances personal attention.
First of all, it is 7 hours a long day. Second, the 30 minute tour of Como is standing in the square with the guide talking. (Initially, it was hard to understand her. After this the tour was fantastic. We took an high speed ferry to Varenna and were able to skip the very long lines. Then off to Bellagio where she made a lunch reservation so we didn’t waste time looking for a place to eat. Our guide, Bianca was wonderful. As I said, the tour was very long. The last hour was dedicated to shopping. We were tired and not interested in shopping. We were tempted to just take a ferry back to Como but weren’t sure about how to do it. All in all it was a fantastic tour and worth the money…
Violetta was an excellent tour guide. She was knowledgeable, inclusive, and provided options to tour members who preferred less walking or more shopping. The boat rides and walking portions of tour were breathtaking!
We had an amazing day with Violette!! Her knowledge of not only the history of Lake Como, the Villas and local villages surrounding the lake was only second to her kindness and patience. Brava dear Violette. Would we recommend this tour which went by in flash!!
However, a potential downside is the cost—at nearly $300 per person, it’s a bit of an investment, especially considering some extras like ferry rides are paid separately.
Generally, this tour is well-suited for travelers who want a comprehensive yet relaxed introduction to Lake Como’s most celebrated spots in just one day. It’s ideal if you prefer guided commentary, efficient transportation, and don’t want to spend hours waiting in line.

We had an amazing tour and experience with out guide Violetta. We were in town for the holidays and knew that Como was in low season. Lots of attractions/restaurants/hotels/etc. were closed. A lake tour seemed like a good options. Luckily we were able to book a last minute tour with Violetta the night before. Within a short timeframe, she reached out to confirm and provide details. This was stellar service to start. Violetta is proud to say it, but rightfully so, she knows Como and more importantly the transportation and ferries. Due to the holidays, all of the ferry schedules were changed and confusing. In addition it was a Sunday, so even less ferry service was available. Violetta insured …
An enjoyable stress free way to visit Vareena and Bellagio from Como. Violetta was a great guide, informative and helpful throughout the day. This is a busy tourist spot with long queue's to get onto ferry’s but Violetta made it easy for us.
Our tour guide Violetta was fantastic! She knew all the tricks with the ferry so we didn’t have to worry about getting to and from the different cities. She was so knowledgeable, willing to take pictures, knew all the secret spots. We felt we had a perfect amount of time in each city. She set up an amazing lunch reservation for us. We had an amazing time!

Starting Point and Early Moments in Como
The tour kicks off from Piazza Cavour in Como, the main square, where your guide will introduce the day’s plan. Expect a quick overview of Como’s top sights and some practical tips. Based on reviews, guides like Violette and Giovanni really shine here, sharing their enthusiasm and detailed knowledge.
Travelers mention feeling like they’re in good hands from the start, which can make a big difference in a busy tourist spot.
Scenic Hydrofoil Ride across Lake Como
After gathering everyone, the group boards a hydrofoil boat—a fast, smooth way to cross the lake and see those iconic villas and villages from the water. This leg typically lasts about 2.5 hours, giving plenty of time to admire the views of Villa d’Este, Villa Carlotta, and even the G. Versace estate.
Multiple reviews highlight how the boat ride alone is worth the price of the tour, with travelers loving the spectacular scenery and the chance to see the lakeshore’s famous villas up close. One reviewer pointed out that the boat ride was a highlight, describing the landscape as a “beautiful mix of pre-alpine and Mediterranean features.”
Really great tour! Giovanni is a very good guide- knowledgable, interesting and easy going. He made the experience lots of fun. We’d definitely recommend this tour.
The tour price ONLY covers the guides and one brief slow ferry ride. After paying for this tour, they stop for gelato (you pay), a mediocre moderately priced lunch at a place they choose (you pay), plus the extra 35 for the hydrofoil. Your "tour of Como" is told to you while you wait on line for the ferry. You have a brief 45 min-1 hour max time in Varenna and you see lovers lane, a church and a square because you are waiting more time for the group to get gelato. Then back to the ferry line to get to Bellagio where lunch takes over one hour — walking tour of Bellagio maybe 45 min max. Very very pricey for what it was. Would NOT recommend. Was so difficult to sit with a huge group at a l…
Bellagio was very lovely and the risotto ossobuco at Seta was as good as Giovanni said. Much too long a wait for the ferry at Como n it cut short the time we had. Varenna was way too rushed. If not for a entertaining guide, I’d have given this a below average rating
Bellagio: Strolling Through Elegance
Arriving in Bellagio, the tour includes a guided walk through the narrow streets, staircases, and the Promenade Europa. Here, you’ll get time to soak in the views, browse shops, or take photos of the lakeside vistas. The L.F. Kennedy monument and panoramic viewpoints are notable stops.
Guides tend to emphasize Bellagio’s charm, and reviews confirm that the walk is delightful. Some mention that the narrow alleyways and picturesque scenery make for perfect photo ops, especially around the Basilica di San Giacomo. Expect about 1.5 hours here, which feels just right—enough to enjoy without feeling rushed.
Visiting Bellagio’s Basilica di San Giacomo
The main church in Bellagio, the Basilica di San Giacomo, is usually included in the itinerary. Guides explain its architecture and art, adding context to what visitors are seeing. It’s a chance to appreciate some cultural heritage without the crowds of bigger cities.
Varenna: Romantic Streets and Historic Churches
Next, the tour takes you by boat to Varenna, often praised as the most romantic town on Lake Como. Wandering its winding streets and Lovers Walk allows for peaceful, scenic exploration. You’ll visit the Chiesa di San Giorgio, where guides describe its features and artworks.
Giovanni was an excellent passionate tour guide. His love of Italian history showed in the details of his explanations of each stop. The high speed ferry was late and Giovanni was able shift and cover all spots included in the tour. Great thinking on your feet Giovanni!!
Great tour led by Giovanni. Entertaining and educational. Would highly recommend this tour of Lake Como.
It was a beautiful day on Lake Como. A wonderful way to see Bellagio and Varenna. Giovanni was the best tour guide and made everything so easy and enjoyable. It was a great way to navigate the crowds in town.
Some reviewers felt that Varenna was a rushed visit, but most appreciate that the organized nature of the tour makes the visit manageable, especially during busy seasons. The 1.5-hour stop gives enough time to enjoy the town’s charm, snap photos, or relax at a cafe.
Additional Churches and Hidden Gems
While San Giovanni Battista isn’t always included, it’s Varenna’s oldest church, with guides explaining its architecture and art. This is a subtle but meaningful touch for those interested in local religious sites.
Scenic Return and Final Highlights in Bellagio
Back in Bellagio, the tour concludes with some leisure time and a visit to the Basilica di San Giacomo if missed earlier. The group then gathers for the boat ride back, offering another chance to enjoy the lakeshore views.
Transportation and Timing Considerations
The tour’s use of hydrofoil for quick transfers is a real plus, helping avoid long waiting times for ferries. However, some reviews mention delays—like a late ferry—though guides like Giovanni adapt well, ensuring the schedule stays on track.
We have been using Viator for over ten years now. This was the best, most informative tour we have ever been on. We had Violetta as tour guide. She is by far the best guide we have ever had. She was skilled and professional in every way. We had 8 people in our group and by the end of the 8 hour tour, we were all friends. Violetta had a great personality, she knew all of the historical details of every place we walked by and into. She pointed out the most scenic photo ops and was happy to act as photographer to capture the most endearing scenes. We highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a truly memorable day. We also recommend using the “fast boat” for any tour of Como. Thanks …
The tour was most enjoyable and I would recommend it very highly. We covered a lot of places in a most efficient manner. The scenery was. spectacular. We visited the important sites. Our guide, Violeta, was exceptional and made it most enjoyable day for everyone in this small group day tour. She was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, worked very hard, and explained things very clearly. She knew where to get the best views. We were able to skip the line in many places which helped greatly in the heat of the day. Local knowledge was clearly very useful. Believe me, you cannot get the same wonderful experience doing it yourself. It was well worth the expense for my wife and me.
Our tour guide Violetta was awesome. And very informative. This was an amazing tour and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in seeing Lake como .
The total duration is approximately 8 hours, which feels well-paced according to travelers. The small group size (up to 8 people) really makes a difference, avoiding the chaos of large tours and enabling better interactions with guides.
