Lanzarote: Northern Cliffs & Valleys Walking Tour — A Deep Dive into the Island’s Hidden Charms

If you’re looking for a way to really experience Lanzarote beyond the usual beaches and resorts, this Northern Cliffs & Valleys Walking tour might be just the thing. While I haven’t done it myself, based on the glowing reviews and detailed itinerary, it sounds like a fantastic way to see a calmer, more authentic side of the island.

What really draws us in are the breathtaking views of the Famara Cliffs and the chance to wander through charming villages like Haria. Plus, the opportunity to discover endemic plants and observe native birds adds a layer of nature appreciation you won’t get on the typical tourist trail.

Amazing tour, very well organised, the actual tour itself.. the itinerary, scenery, the route, the views etc were incredible. The tour guide Raquel was amazing, so friendly and knowledgable, really great company. Excellent tour! Highly recommended, I loved it.

Raquel is a wonderful guide. We were picked up at the hotel on time, driven to the start of the hike and had coffee. Rawuel had snacks, water and even equipment for those who needed it. The hike was fabulous and she was very good at explaining the geology, flora and fauna, history and culture of the area. We were rewarded with fabulous views from the top. We then walked to Haria for a visit to the market and coffee. Absolutely super and would def recommend. 💖🥾💖

One aspect to consider is the walk’s moderate difficulty over roughly 9.5 kilometers—so it’s best suited for those with a reasonable level of fitness.

This tour seems ideal for travelers who enjoy nature, scenic landscapes, and cultural spots, especially if you’re into small-group experiences with knowledgeable guides. But if you’re looking for a leisurely stroll with little physical effort, this might not be the best fit. Still, for those who appreciate genuine local insights and stunning vistas, it’s a solid pick.

The Heart of the Tour: What You Can Expect

Lanzarote: Northern Cliffs & Valleys Walking tour - The Heart of the Tour: What You Can Expect

Starting in the tranquil village of Maguez at 10:00 am (check current availability for exact times), this 4-hour walking adventure is a balance of scenic beauty, cultural insights, and nature discovery. The initial stretch takes you through lush meadows and valleys, where the landscape barely hints at the dramatic cliffs ahead.

As you approach the Famara Cliffs, the views really come into focus. With 500 meters of sheer vertical height, these cliffs are an iconic feature of Lanzarote’s northern coast. You’ll get to marvel at the rugged shoreline and the rolling Atlantic beyond, making it a perfect spot for photos and just soaking in the vastness of the landscape.

One of the most beloved parts of the tour is the visit to Haria, famously called the “Valley of the Thousand Palms.” This village has a story that echoes resilience—once marked by misery and invasions, it has transformed into a tranquil, picturesque place.

Haria’s Saturday market is a definite highlight. You’ll find local crafts, homemade goat cheese, traditional ‘mojos’ (sauces), and jams—perfect for a taste of authentic Lanzarote. Many reviews praise the experience here, with one traveler mentioning how José, the guide, gave “interesting information” and spoke excellent English.

Unfortunately the weather was not in our side so the entire hike was impossible due to heavy rain. In the end, Raquel tried to make the best of the day and offered us a guided tour to Jameos del Agua – which, when with a knowledgeable guide becomes a better experience because you notice so many more things than going alone. We than made a great ride all along the coast – Arrieta, Punta de Mujeres to Orzola. Than she took us to Mirador del Rio with its breathtaking view of La Graciosa. Since the rain than stopped, we went for a hike up the Volcán de la Corona. In the end, even tho the weather was not the best, Raquel made us anyways very fulfilling 5h of activities.

Alles war perfekt! Unsere Guide Raquel erklärte uns so viel. Die Tour mit grandiosen Ausblicken in kleiner Gruppe war einmalig! Vielen Dank an Raquel und den Veranstalter!!
Hannah
Really great tour, our guide Raquel was very knowledgeable and passionate about what she does. Really interesting to see a different side of Lanzarote and we learned so much about the history of the island as well as the spectacular views of landscape. Highly recommend!

From flora to fauna, this part of the island hosts several endemic plants like Aeonium lancerottense, Tojia, and Echium lancerottense. Bird lovers might even spot the Egyptian Vulture (Guirre) or the Barbary falcon soaring overhead. The guides are knowledgeable about these species, adding educational value to the walk.
