Exploring the Basque region from Bilbao is a treat, and this full-day tour offers a well-rounded taste of its sacred sites, coastal charm, and vibrant city life. While it’s not a comprehensive deep dive into everything, it hits many of the highlights in a manageable, organized way that’s perfect if you’re short on time but eager to see more.

What really stands out about this experience are the guides who bring the region’s stories to life and the breathtaking views you’ll get from San Sebastian’s Igeldo viewpoint. Plus, the chance to wander through quaint fishing villages like Getaria and enjoy San Sebastian’s world-famous pintxos adds a delightful flavor to the day.

A possible caveat? The day can feel a bit packed, especially during busy seasons, so if you prefer slow-paced, in-depth explorations, this might feel slightly rushed at times. It’s best suited for travelers who want to tick off major sights without spending days on each location.

Many travelers find this stop both beautiful and evocative.

Nice day-we especially enjoyed the sanctuary and commentary from our guide who was a wealth of knowledge.

Exploring Getaria

Next, you’ll hop into your comfortable minivan and head to Getaria, a tiny fishing village that’s packed with character. Known for its traditional boats and historic buildings, Getaria is also famous as the birthplace of designer Cristobal Balenciaga and explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano.

Walking through its narrow streets, you get a sense of old Basque life. A reviewer mentioned, “The village was charming, and I loved learning about Balenciaga’s roots.”

This stop is roughly 45 minutes, giving a good amount of time for a leisurely stroll and photo ops. It’s free to wander, and it’s ideal for those who enjoy authentic, low-key coastal towns.

Passing through Zarautz

The tour then passes through Zarautz, a town renowned for its expansive beach, the longest in the Basque Country. The scenery here is stunning, especially if you’re into surfing or just love a good seaside view. The drive through Zarautz adds to the overall coastal feel of the trip, even if you’re not stopping for long.

Somehow ended up being two couples only with Stefan as guide. It was very good unlike the too large and rushed tours we have taken over the past two weeks. Stefan was very knowledgeable, funny, friendly and hospitable.

St Ignacio de Loyola and one of our founder El cano are both important people in our religious propagation and exploration.
Elaine T
The sanctuary was absolutely beautiful. Free time allowed me to participate in the midday prayer at basilica, but it was short. Good recommendations for pintxo and the San Sebastián basque cheesecake which cannot be missed! Even bumped into celebrities during lunch. To round it up, a bird’s eye view of San Sebiastian with an ice cream!

San Sebastian’s Old Town and Igeldo Viewpoint

The highlight for many travelers is San Sebastian. You’ll get a panoramic tour of the city, followed by a walk through the picturesque old quarter. The narrow streets, lively pintxo bars, and historic architecture make this a favorite stop. One reviewer noted, “The old town was charming, and the view from Igeldo was breathtaking.”

You’ll have free time to explore, grab some local bites, or simply soak in the scenery. The guided part includes a trip up to Igeldo to see the bay of La Concha — a view that’s often described as postcard-perfect. The guide’s commentary helps you understand the city’s cultural importance and what makes it so special.

This trip was easily one of my favorite experiences while staying in Spain. Our amazing tour guide (I think his name is Garai) took us across the beautiful Basque country and stopped along beautiful landmarks for us to relax and sightsee while he enthusiastically told us about the history and culture. We even got free local seafood tapas at Getaria to make up the minor delay before the trip started: what great service!
Henry C
Stefan met us as arranged and settled us 2 Irishmen and 4 other pleasant people into a clean comfortable minivan. He outlined the itinerary in English and Spanish and prepared us for the journey. Each stop as described in the programme was especially interesting for us and perfectly explained by Stefan. He displayed an excellent range of knowledge about the countryside and the historical landscape of each destination. We enjoyed lunch ( 3 premises) well lubricated by most palatable local wine. We thoroughly enjoyed the company of the other travellers and most especially Stevan’s hard work and jovial personality. Harry

What a memorable experience learning about the history of the region in Loyola and geraria. And we definitely want to return to San Sebastian where we enjoyed a fantastic meal, the best we've had in our 10 days in Spain. Stefan was very knowledgeable and patient as he did the tour in English and Spanish.

Weather can also affect the experience, especially since the tour runs rain or shine. An umbrella or raincoat isn’t a bad idea if the forecast isn’t clear.
