Lovely day and trip to Pico Arieiro and the nearby area. It was not only a sunrise trip for us, but we also managed to enjoy stargazing as we arrived early and a clear sky permitted us to enjoy the stars. On our way up to the watch point, we had some coffee and biscuits that our guide kindly prepared for us 🤍 Being a sunny and clear day we had a chance to take in the most beautiful views while walking up to Pico Arieiro and hiking trail Stairway to Heaven. Information and advice from the guide helped us follow and navigate the path, and enjoy the nature on our way down from the mountain. Different from other hikes this one allowed us pet the donkeys at the end of our tour 🙂 Highly recomm…

We were unlucky with the weather on the day, at Pico do Arieiro there was a lot of cloud and the sunrise was delayed through the clouds. We did not know that we would do the first PR1 hike BEFORE sunrise, this was a surprise to the whole group. We finished the first walk completely in the dark, and waited another hour before it got light. The second hike PR3 was shortly after sunrise and ended at a forest cafe for lunch. Seeing the donkeys at the end was a highlight. Otherwise the views on this hike were not outstanding. We were deep in the foliage and it was cloudy but can’t be helped. We did an extra walk after lunch to make up for the unfortunate weather and strange start to the trip. T…

The Morning Sunrise: A Breathtaking Start

The tour begins bright and early, with pickup from your hotel or accommodation in areas like Funchal, Machico, Santa Cruz, or Caniço. From there, you’re whisked up to Pico do Arieiro, the island’s third-highest peak at 1,817 meters — a place renowned for its dramatic vistas.

There’s something genuinely special about watching the sunrise from this vantage point. As the sky shifts from dark to a palette of pinks, oranges, and gold, you’ll realize why this moment is often called a “must-see” in Madeira. The panoramic views of the mountains and clouds forming a sea beneath you can truly take your breath away. One review raves about a guide named Fabio, who made everything perfect with his patience, humor, and helpful attitude, elevating the experience further.

The PR1 “Stairway to Heaven” Trail

After witnessing the sunrise, the adventure moves to the first hike, the PR1 trail. Known as the “Stairway to Heaven,” this route takes about 1.5 hours and is a fantastic way to stretch your legs and take in the terrain that makes Madeira special. We loved the way this trail combines a bit of a challenge with the reward of stunning views.

This section of the walk is manageable for most and offers a real taste of Madeira’s rugged beauty. You’ll walk along mountain paths, feeling the cool breeze and hearing the crunch of gravel underfoot. It’s a good introduction to the island’s flora and the diverse landscape.

Waterfalls, Donkeys, and Scenic Views on PR3

Next up is the PR3 trail, which takes approximately 2.5 hours. This part of the day really highlights Madeira’s natural charms — waterfalls, rivers, and lush greenery. It’s a trail that offers plenty of visual interest, with water cascading beside you and plenty of photo opportunities.

Here, you might even spot some donkeys wandering around, adding a touch of rustic charm. The trail isn’t just about the views; it’s about feeling immersed in the environment, listening to the water, and enjoying the peacefulness of the mountains.

Excellent trip! Really enjoyed the day hiking in a very relaxed, not rushed environment! Saw shooting stars over Pico do Arieiro followed by sunrise. Excellent breakfast at the cafe at the end of PR3. The whole group was keen to continue hiking so we did a few more shorter trails in the late morning, to see some great views over Funchal. Great guide, seamless trip! Thank you

This was on our bucket list to do. Howver we were so unlucky with the weather, Nelio our guide was fantastic, knew exactly when we would be collected from hotel & got us upto pico before anyone else. Unfortunately, the weather was really not great and could not see anything, plus lots of rain…… but we still walked the part we could with head torches up to the stairway of heaven which was interesting but could not see any views or even see how far up we were! Sadly no sunrise ( def recommend taking a head torch or light ) Was still an experience and Nelio had coffee and biscuits for us which was most welcome! We then got to walk PR3 which was pretty although sadly we still had rain and mi…
