If you’re eyeing a full-day escape into Switzerland’s stunning landscapes without the hassle of planning every detail, this tour offers a pretty tempting package. It combines scenic transportation, beautiful mountain views, and charming city exploration all in one go. We haven’t personally taken this exact trip, but based on available reviews and detailed itineraries, it’s clear that this experience has a lot going for it.
What we really like about this tour is how it offers independent exploration at Mount Rigi, letting you set your own pace—and that the day wraps up with a relaxing boat ride across Lake Lucerne, a real highlight for anyone wanting to see multiple facets of Swiss scenery.
Also, the included transportation—covering the trip from Zurich to Weggis, the mountain, Vitznau, and back—is a big plus for those who want to avoid navigating public transport alone.
A really nice trip through Mt. Rigi, Lake Lucerne, and Lucerne town. It was largely unguided, we basically just got travel vouchers, and then a quite significant walk back to the bus station in Lucerne. We had a good time, but it was not exactly what I would call a "tour".
It’s pretty much a transportation to and from the sights. There was informative commentary from the guide on the way out, but not much in the way back. Everything was smoothly explained about where we were going, the tickets/vouchers,… the only thing I’d say was that I wished they would have given us a feeling for how far the meeting point was for the return. Having never been there, it was much farther than where we thought. But overall, it was a good trip that allowed you individual time to explore. And the guide did give us suggestions.
This was an experience of a lifetime! The team that took us up were amazing- they explained everything very clearly and we knew what to expect! The views were breathtaking!
However, one thing to keep in mind is that guidance is only partial—meaning you’ll be mostly on your own during the free time at Mount Rigi and in Lucerne, which could feel a bit daunting if you prefer fully guided experiences. This tour is best suited for those comfortable with self-directed sightseeing, who enjoy flexibility, and don’t mind a bit of independent wandering.
In all, this experience is particularly good for solo travelers, couples, or friends who want a flexible, scenic adventure without the pressure of a tightly guided tour. If you love soaking in views from mountain peaks, enjoy a boat cruise, and appreciate having some free time to explore at your own pace, this might be just what you’re after.

Starting Point and Transfer
The tour kicks off in Zurich at the Sihlquai Bus Station at 9:30 am. From there, the coach takes you out into the Swiss countryside, which already hints at the upcoming scenery—rolling fields, distant mountains, and lakes shimmering in the sunlight. The drive itself is a calming start, giving you a taste of the landscape that makes Switzerland so captivating.
First Stop: Weggis
Your first official stop is the charming lakeside town of Weggis. This spot acts as your gateway to the mountains. Here, you’ll hop on an aerial cable car that whisks you from the lake’s edge up to Rigi Kaltbad, a journey that promises breathtaking views even during the ascent. Reviewers mention how the cable car ride alone is an experience worth savoring, with one noting, “The drive through the countryside was beautiful, the scenery up Mt Rigi of the surrounding mountain ranges and lakes made you appreciate nature.”
Exploring Mount Rigi
Once at Rigi Kaltbad, you change to Europe’s first mountain railway, the cogwheel train, heading up to the summit Rigi-Kulm. The ascent is smooth and slow enough to really take in the scenery—think deep-blue lakes, lush forests, and snow-capped peaks if you’re visiting in the right season. The summit at 1,800 meters offers sweeping views that can overwhelm even seasoned travelers. Some reviews highlight how memorable the vistas are: “The views from the top of this majestic mountain to the midland with its deep blue lakes and the snowcapped mountain range will overwhelm you!”
You’re given the freedom to stay at Rigi for 1-2.5 hours, which means you can hike the well-marked trails, find a cozy Alpine restaurant to enjoy hearty Swiss fare, or just sit back and soak in the scenery. The flexibility here is great—reviewers mention that you can tailor your experience, whether it’s a quick visit or a more leisurely exploration. One guest wrote, “Mt. Gigi was breathtaking, and our guide was excellent. It was truly a highlight of our vacation.”
Fernando was great! Very knowledgeable and helpful. The trip itself was great, too! Beautiful sights, great (optional) hiking with panoramic views. The train ride into town was nice and the boat ride offered a fantastic view of the town.
We had a fantastic tour visiting Mt. Rigi, Lucerne with our Boat ride. Cecilia was a great tour guide and very knowledgable. We loved the bus trip, cable car and cog train parts of the trip and found we had of lot of our own free time to hike and look around on the tour and it was very well timed. The scenery was beautiful on the mountain and also on the boat trip. We thoroughly recommend this trip
Its a good tour, our tour guide Adolfo and driver Francisxo are very informative.. Just follow the direction and you wont get lost.Alhough during our tour at Mt.Regi its so foggy that we cant see the view and in Lucerne it rained. So check the weather.
Descent and Lake Cruise
Descending by cogwheel train back to Vitznau, you’ll experience the classic Swiss mountain train ride, with more stunning views. From Vitznau, it’s just a short boat ride across Lake Lucerne to Lucerne itself. The boat cruise is often praised for its tranquility and picturesque setting. One reviewer noted, “The boat ride across Lake Lucerne was lovely and added a peaceful, scenic element to the day.”

Exploring Lucerne
Once in Lucerne, you’ll have about two hours to meander through the medieval streets, check out the Chapel Bridge, the Jesuit Church, and the Town Hall. For those interested in museums, suggestions include the Swiss Museum of Transport and the Rosengart Museum (entry fees may apply). Many travelers appreciate the free time, describing Lucerne as “a lovely town bordering the lake with lots of charm.” The city’s compact size makes it easy to see the highlights without feeling rushed.
Return to Zurich
After your exploration, you’ll meet the guide again for the coach journey back to Zurich, arriving around early evening. Some reviews mention how punctual and smooth the return trip was, though a few noted delays or organizational hiccups—so keep an eye on timing if you have other plans afterward.
Transportation, Timing, and Value

One of the biggest pluses of this tour is the seamless transportation. The round-trip coach from Zurich saves you the headache of figuring out how to get to Weggis or Vitznau. Plus, the combination of cable car, cogwheel train, and boat ride makes this a full sensory experience—each step showcasing different aspects of Swiss scenery and engineering.
At about four hours of free time spread across the day, you’re not rushed. You’ll have enough time to enjoy a scenic hike or a relaxed lunch, which is especially helpful for those who want a more immersive experience rather than a quick snapshot.
In terms of value, the $191.44 price covers not just transportation but also the iconic transport modes and the scenic cruise. Many reviews suggest that the views and the experience justify the cost, especially for those who prefer a flexible, self-paced adventure rather than a fully guided tour.
The Realities of the Tour
It’s worth noting that in certain periods (late fall and spring), the cable car might be under maintenance, and the entire mountain journey will be by cogwheel train instead. This change might slightly alter the experience but still provides the same impressive views. Also, the tour has a maximum of 48 travelers, which helps keep things manageable and less crowded, but it can still get busy during peak seasons.
Some guests have expressed mixed feelings about the level of guidance: While many loved the independence, others found the lack of detailed guidance a little stressful. A few mentioned organizational hiccups, like delayed buses or vague meeting instructions, so being prepared for some independent navigation is wise.
The Bottom Line

This tour is a solid choice for travelers who crave a scenic, flexible day out from Zurich. The mix of cable car, cogwheel train, and boat provides a well-rounded Swiss experience—each offering unique vistas and photo opportunities. The free time at Mount Rigi and Lucerne allows for a personalized pace, so you can hike, eat, or just relax at your leisure.
It’s especially suited for those comfortable with self-guided exploration, who don’t mind a tour with minimal guiding after the initial setup. The views and variety of transportation make this a memorable, value-packed trip that offers a genuine taste of Swiss natural beauty.
If you’re after a day that combines iconic scenery, comfortable travel, and the flexibility to shape your own adventure, this trip could be perfect. Just be prepared for some logistical independence and minor organizational quirks, and you’ll likely come away with a lot of great photos and memories.
