Exploring Santorini in Comfort and Style: Our Take on the Full-Day Private Road Trip
If you’re considering a way to see Santorini beyond the typical crowds and postcard spots, a private full-day road trip sounds like a promising option. Based on the rave reviews and detailed descriptions, this tour promises a personalized experience in a luxury vehicle, with plenty of flexibility to tailor your day. We love that it offers a more intimate glimpse into the island’s diverse charms—away from the busy group tours.
Two standout features really appeal to us. First, the customizable itinerary means you’re not just stuck with a preset route; you can choose what interests you most, whether it’s scenic viewpoints or quaint villages. Second, the luxury transportation—a Mercedes vehicle—ensures comfort throughout the day, which is especially nice when you’re covering so much ground.
Dimitris is our guide/driver, he’s the best, he’s a very caring person, when I was sick from low sugar levels, he ran to buy me an apple juice, when my husband was too tired to walk, he found him a place to sit and wait for us. I highly recommend him to anyone wants to take a private trip.
This was a wonderful tour and we enjoyed our private experience with our guide/driver Sakis. He took us everywhere-some of the highlights-the highest point of the island-santos winery-old village-red sea-Oia-stopped at bakery and pita gyro for delicious food and or course took us to great spot to see the beautiful sunset. Sakis was patient and friendly and we would definitely recommend doing this tour. The experience was intimate and it cut out the crowds and the waiting for people like you would have to do on bus tours. Book the tour!!!
We really had a driver rather than a guide. That was nice, but I was expecting a much more engaging experience At one point, we were simply dropped off and said I’ll meet you in an hour Not really what I had hoped for Santorini itself is overrun with us tourists That certainly did not help our experience
One thing to keep in mind is that, as a private tour, it might be a bit pricier than group options, but the value lies in the tailored experience and the comfort you gain. If you’re someone who hates feeling rushed or crammed into a bus, this could be a perfect fit.
This experience suits travelers who want to maximize their day on Santorini, especially if you prefer a flexible, relaxed pace with a private guide. Perfect for couples, friends, or small groups who value comfort and custom experiences over crowds and rigid schedules.

Why a Private Tour Makes a Difference
One of the biggest draws here is the private nature—only your group participates, which means more flexibility and intimacy. You won’t be herded along with dozens of other travelers; instead, your guide can adapt the pace and focus on what interests you most. From reviews, many travelers appreciated the knowledgeable guides and the ability to customize the route, making it feel like a day spent with a local friend.
The Itinerary: What You’ll See and Do
The tour kicks off with a visit to Profitis Ilias, the highest point on the island at 567 meters. From here, you’ll get sweeping views of the entire island, including the iconic Oia. The monastery on top, built in 1712, adds a touch of history and a sense of connection to the island’s religious past. Travelers have noted the stunning vistas from this vantage point—definitely a photo spot worth the early morning effort.
Next, you’ll head to Pyrgos, a charming hilltop village that used to be the island’s capital until the early 1800s. Walking through its narrow, winding streets, you’ll see traditional Cycladic houses and around 33 churches. Many reviews highlight how Pyrgos feels like stepping back in time—authentic, quiet, and full of character. It’s a perfect place to wander and soak in the local atmosphere.
This was one of the best excursions we've ever booked. We originally booked this for the wrong date (literally the night before the day we booked), and the tour operator was fantastic about letting us change to the correct date. Really impressive. From there, it only got better. The tour operator was in touch with us all morning as we were not sure how long our tender or cable car ride would take. We were close to our original estimated time, but they made sure our guide was on time and connected us to him. Our guide, Bill, was such a nice surprise. He texted us where to meet and then literally guided us around the island all day. He gave us info about the places and gave us insider tips. We…
Our tour guide Sakis was very knowledgeable about the Island and took us to all the best spots. He was so kind to drive slowly when he found out I was scared of heights
What a nice tour, our tourist guide wa a local so je knows all the nice place to go to take nice shot plus he is a good photographer. Our pictures are so lovely
The tour then moves south to Perivolos Beach, where you can bathe in the black sand or enjoy a relaxed lunch. The beach is famous for its volcanic sand and laid-back vibe. A lot of travelers loved this pause for some downtime, especially since it’s free time—whether you want to swim, sunbathe, or grab a snack.
From there, you’ll visit the Windmills of Emporio—a classic postcard view, with windmills that are both historic and picturesque. Several reviews pointed out how these windmills, in various states of repair, offer great photo opportunities and panoramic views, especially during sunrise or sunset.
The next stop is the Red Beach, easily one of the most photogenic spots on the island. Its striking red cliffs and volcanic sand create a surreal landscape. While the tour doesn’t specify whether you can swim here, many visitors enjoy just snapping photos and marveling at the scenery.
Finally, the crown jewel: Oia. Known worldwide for its iconic white and blue architecture, Oia is a postcard come to life. The tour dedicates about two hours to exploring this small village, giving you time to stroll along the caldera edge, snap photos, or just soak in the serenity. It’s the perfect ending point—especially if you catch the sunset, which many reviews praise as a highlight of the day.
What Travelers Say
The reviews paint a pretty positive picture, especially praising guides like Sakis and Kiriyakos for their knowledge and friendliness. One reviewer called their guide "the best yet," highlighting how they accommodated requests and made the day extra special. Others appreciated the timing and pacing, noting that they weren’t rushed and were able to enjoy each stop.
A few reviews mention some downsides—like feeling more like a driver than a guide, or being dropped off at some points to explore on your own. One guest expressed disappointment that the experience felt too crowded and touristy, which can happen if you're expecting a more engaging, guided experience. But overall, most found it to be excellent value, considering the convenience and the personalized approach.
The Value for the Price
At around $189 per person, the price reflects a premium experience—private transportation, a knowledgeable driver, and the freedom to choose your stops. When you consider how much time and comfort you save, plus the ability to customize your day, it’s often viewed as worth the investment. The included hotel pickup and drop-off are also handy, removing the stress of navigating public transport or taxi queues.
