Tour starts in the lagoon, you drive with huge terrain vehicle to the glacier around 30min. Then you hike to the cave around 10min. I like that tour is in a small group, around 10 people, compared with other providers with 20+ people. Cave is beautiful! Our guide was very sweet and funny, also sharing really interesting facts about glacier history, cave formation process etc. He was also very helpful, doing photos of everyone and made us feel very welcome. Genuinely recommended.

Beautiful hike/tour. We went in mid-November and it is cold and windy, make sure to be prepared for that.

We had a fantastic experience on this blue ice cave tour. I wish I could remember our guide’s name, but she was terrific. Knowledgeable, kind, careful, and fun! She brought a spiritual element to the tour, which was appreciated. My only strong recommendation to the tour company is to give clear instructions on where to meet up as a group.

We’ll start with a pick-up in Jökulsárlón, where a small group boards a modified super Jeep capable of handling the icy roads. The ride to Vatnajökull National Park takes around 30 minutes, and during this time, you get a chance to enjoy the breathtaking landscape of Iceland’s largest glacier.

Entering the Ice Cave

Inside the cave, your guides will share fascinating stories about how these caves form and their seasonal variations. Many reviews mention that there are multiple caves to explore, some more crowded than others, but in general, the caves are spectacularly colorful and otherworldly. The blue ice, contrasted with natural light filtering through, creates a surreal atmosphere.

I rate this tour as 2.5 stars. Positives: The tour guides were organized and knowledgeable about the glacier. They took great photos inside the cave for all the groups. It was cool to realize you were in an actual cave made of ice. Negatives: There wasn:t much to the tour. You drove for 40 minutes in a jeep and walked for about 15 minutes to the glacier. Then you put on crampons and walked another 5 minutes on the actual glacier into the cave. The cave was small, so there wasn't much to explore. Although the photos are gorgeous and vibrant blue, in person it's only kind of blue. We got exactly what we paid for, but it was kind of boring. The photos definitely make it look cooler than it is.

Guillermo was a lovely host—-knowledgeable, kind, set up rock walking trail for us to enter a cave without getting wet. We got to explore 2 stunning caves! Incredible experience—highly recommend

Had a good time. Spent about 15 min or so driving in the large 4×4 vehicle along an easy F road to the glacier edge. Parked with other tours and hiked over some rocky terrain to the glacier, about another 15 minutes. Toured the cave in sections, each taking about 15 minutes for the 3-4 sections. Lots of other tours in the cave at the same time. Got some good photos and it was a nice experience overall. Photos in the ad aren't the same cave that you'll be seeing however.

You’ll have the chance to capture photos of the internal formations, and some reviews mention they were able to explore independently once inside, with the guide nearby for safety and advice. The caves are large enough in certain spots to stand up comfortably, though some areas require crouching.

Tour Duration and Return

The whole trip lasts roughly 3.5 hours, including transportation, hiking, and cave exploration. After exploring, you’ll head back to Jökulsárlón, with plenty of time to process your photos or continue sightseeing. The group size is capped at 14, making for a cozy and intimate experience.

What to Expect Practicalities

Transport: The highlight here is the Super Jeep, capable of navigating Iceland’s icy F-roads. This adds a layer of adventure over standard bus tours. The drive is scenic, and many reviews mention how enjoyable and comfortable it is to sit in a vehicle designed for tough terrain.

Our guide, Matthew was amazing and knowledgeable! Great experience. Hiked up glacier and the views are stunning.

Equipment: Helmets and crampons are provided, so you don’t need to worry about bringing special gear—just dress warmly in waterproof layers, sturdy hiking shoes, and warm socks. It’s worth noting that some reviews suggest bringing rainwear and gloves for comfort.

Group size and flexibility: The maximum capacity is 14 travelers, which keeps the experience intimate. You can choose to explore the caves independently or with your guide, which many find appealing.

This was hands down the best thing we did while in Iceland! Our tour guide Jessie was very knowledgeable and friendly, and was able to adapt the tour based on current weather conditions and ensure we were seeing the best views and elements of the glacier on that day. We were lucky enough to have the sun come out while we were climbing up the glacier, and the view was absolutely stunning. The ice cave itself was so beautiful and colorful, and fascinating to walk through, and really only one element of the overall experience of being on the glacier. Jessie told us a lot of interesting facts and history about the glacier and the landscape, and always ensured we were safe during the climb. Thank…

This was such an amazing tour that I would highly recommend. One of the coolest experiences of my life! Our guide Holt was incredible and answered all our questions.
Charlotte M
The experience was amazing but definitely not worth the price. Our guide was lovely and very informative and the caves themselves were stunning and there was moments for photo opportunities. However, we felt it did not live up to this steep price, we felt it should’ve been cheaper or it should’ve also included a chance to walk on the actual glacier itself more. Additionally, the cave was filled with other tour groups and we were having to wait around for groups to move around before we could actually see anything.
Sharon G
Amazing! Our guide, Holt, was super friendly and took amazing pictures for us. Absolutely worth the drive.
