How the Tour Starts and What You Can Expect

The journey kicks off at the main gate of Teatro Massimo Opera House, where your guide will be easy to spot—holding a red umbrella and a branded red bag. From here, you’ll meet your fellow travelers and get a quick rundown of what’s ahead. This initial meet-and-greet sets a friendly tone, making it easy to relax and feel part of a small, manageable group.

The tour lasts about three hours, a perfect length to cover quite a bit without feeling rushed. As you start walking through Palermo’s backstreets, your guide—often a local with a passion for food and storytelling—will keep the atmosphere lively and engaging. You’ll be walking along the old port and through lively markets like Vucciria, which is packed with vendors selling the best local bites.

The Food: What You’ll Try and What It Means

This isn’t a tour of touristy pizza joints or cheesy souvenirs. Instead, you’ll sample what locals eat—some of it quite challenging, but all delicious. For example, the guide will introduce you to panel chickpea fritters, potato croquettes, and rich Sicilian focaccia.

Really enjoyed learning about traditional sicilian street food. Our guide Alessandro who is also a chef was good fun and gave us a good lesson on the local food and architecture. There was no shortage of yummy food or drinks. A nice small group. Would definitely recommend especially if you only have a short time in Palermo like us.
Ani
Great first hand experience in Palermo. Visited many places, loved the historical connections we were taught about the food. Would recommend!
Helen
Generous food portion sizes at every stage including the final gelato. We also had the facility to have the sandwiches as a take away second from last (as we were full) Suggestions for improvement would be to include at least one additional wine/beer with the chick pea/potato/splean dishes. Also the spleen bun was delicious but far too large. Even the men struggled to eat so we would suggest providing half or even quarter portions. The guide was very friendly and informative. We really enjoyed her company.

You might even get a chance to try a spleen sandwich, which is definitely an acquired taste but an authentic part of Palermo’s street food scene.

One of the standout dishes is the baked ravazzata with ragù sauce—a traditional treat unknown to many travelers but loved by locals. The portions are generous, enough to replace a full dinner, and each bite is paired with Sicilian wine or beer, making each stop feel like a celebration.

A review mentions the generous food portions and the opportunity to take away sandwiches if you’re too full—something that really adds to the value.

Exploring Palermo’s Hidden Spots

Your guide’s local knowledge shines brightest here. They’ll lead you into hidden alleyways, delis, and market stalls that you might never find on your own. The tour is designed not just as a food tasting but as an insightful cultural walk—from architecture to social customs.
