it was great. The tour guide has useful knowledge. We were at Buzludzha at difficult winter conditions but tour guide is experienced. I would like to see Buzludzha in summer as well. Thank you so much
the guides were exceptional. knowledgeable, friendly and very accommodating
Ivan was the best tour guide! He knew a lot about Bulgarian history and taught me a lot about the attractions along the way. He was also very helpful when it came to directions before and after the tour. Buzludzha is so awesome and I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Bulgaria.
One thing to keep in mind is that the day involves a good amount of driving—about two hours to the first stop, then more as you explore around. But overall, this tour suits those who enjoy learning about history with a side of scenic views and authentic local atmosphere.

The Itinerary in Detail

Starting Point and Departure
Your day begins early in Plovdiv, with pickup from your hotel. The guide will take care of the logistics, so you can settle in comfortably and get ready for a full day of exploration. The drive to the first stop, Buzludzha, takes about two hours. During this time, you’ll enjoy the scenery—mountains, fields, and small villages—and get a chance to chat with your guide about Bulgaria’s history and culture.
Buzludzha: The Socialist Icon
Once you arrive at Buzludzha, you’ll be greeted by a sight that’s both awe-inspiring and a little surreal: the abandoned yet restored monument perched on a mountain peak. Built in 1981 to honor socialism, it was constructed by Bulgarian Army units with contributions from artisans who created the murals and statues you see today.
The monument’s history is quite telling. After Bulgaria’s political shift in 1989, the site was left to weather vandalism and decay. Recently, thanks to volunteers, artists, and conservation efforts from Bulgaria and Europe, it’s been brought back to life—though still retaining its raw, graffiti-covered charm. Expect to be amazed by its size, the murals, and the stories behind its design.

Descending from the mountain, you’ll visit Dimitrovgrad, one of the few towns established during Bulgaria’s Communist era. This little city is an interesting mix of monumental architecture and everyday life, giving you a glimpse into what urban life was like under socialism. You’ll walk through its parks and the town center, soaking in the atmosphere that’s still tinged with that period’s vibe.
Ivo, professional history teacher, was really passionate about and proud of sharing and learning the stories of his country's long history – how lucky I was, what brought me here was exactly my curiosity in Bulgarian history!! He was so knowledgeable and such a great story teller that I couldn't stop asking random questions, to each of which he kindly answered with detailed backgrounds. Beyond an exciting tourist experience, definitely the best history lesson I've ever had! Many many thanks again Ivo, all my best wishes for your journey to realize your great vision!
Ivo à été un excellent guide toute la journée. Féru d'histoire, il a partagé avec gentillesse sa passion sur l'histoire de son pays et de sa région. Je recommande vivement cette visite.
Had an amazing day out with Adrian yesterday . Visit to a Russian church, Buzludzha Monument (need to see it to believe it). A stop for a walk around the charming town of Dimitrograd with its many parks and soviet Baroque architecture, a spot of delicious lunch at a pavement cafe (vegi for me) . Next, off to the fascinating Plovdiv Museum Of Aviation with its collection of mainly military aircraft. The trip was around 10 hours , mountains , pretty villages , fields of vines , fields of rose, storks nesting on telegraph poles, horse and carts and a bit of Lada spotting. A perfect day out. My guide Adrian, is your man if you need to know anything Balkan related, past or present, was lots of fu…
Several reviewers mention how walking through Dimitrovgrad feels like stepping into history—an authentic, somewhat nostalgic experience. It’s a chance to see the kind of towns that aren’t usually on the tourist radar but tell a lot about Bulgaria’s recent past.
