We haven’t done this exact trip ourselves, but based on the detailed reviews and itinerary info, it looks like an engaging way to see some of Bulgaria’s most intriguing archaeological and cultural sites.

What makes this trip stand out are two key things: first, the chance to walk through Perperikon, an archaeological site that’s believed to have played a significant role in Thracian civilization, and second, the visit to the world’s tallest Virgin Mary statue in Haskovo—a truly impressive sight.

Lucky enough to get a private tour as no one else booked. My guide, Ivo, was entertaining and knowledgeable about history and the sites we went too. They had just discovered a new tomb at Perperikon when we went so hopefully this increases both grants and interest here as it’s truly a bit of an undiscovered gem. The scenery was gorgeous as we drove through the mountains. Well worth the tour

This was my second tour with Bultrip in five days. Both tours were outstanding, well planned (no rushing through sites), and feature expert guides. Yesterday I had the pleasure of a private tour with “Ivo,” a trained historian who also leads day hiking tours. He’s laid back, but has an amazing knowledge of not just Bulgarian, but Balkan history and culture. By the time he dropped me off, after a very full and satisfying day, I felt I’d attended a university lecture! Which is NOT to scare anyone away, I wanted that much info! He can share as much or as little as you want. I’m delighted I found this company and am recommending them to all my friends. They focus on tours that really e…

One possible drawback? The day is quite packed—10 hours long—so if you’re someone who prefers a more relaxed pace or wants to linger at sites, it might feel a bit rushed. Still, for those eager to explore a good chunk of Bulgaria’s ancient past without fuss, this trip is likely a solid choice.

This experience is best suited for history buffs, curious travelers, or anyone interested in Bulgaria’s ancient civilizations. It’s also a great pick if you prefer small group tours, as it’s limited to just 8 participants, fostering a more personal vibe.

Starting the Day: From Plovdiv to Perperikon

Your journey kicks off early at around 8:00 AM with hotel pickup, so be ready for a day of exploration. The first stop, Perperikon, is a highlight for anyone interested in ancient civilizations. This archaeological site dates back to the 5th century BC and spans Thracian, Byzantine, and medieval periods.

We loved the way the site’s history is woven into its structures. The site includes a palace complex, a sanctuary, and a fortress, with stone buildings that have withstood centuries of weather and war. The large hall, tower, and courtyard offer a tangible sense of the past, especially for those interested in ruins that tell stories beyond what books can provide. The sanctuary, in particular, is believed to have been used for religious rituals—so if you’re into mystical or spiritual sites, Perperikon hits the mark.

Why Perperikon Is Worth the Visit

Perperikon’s significance isn’t just in its size but in its role as a political, religious, and economic hub during the Thracian era. The site’s strategic position atop a hill offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making it not only historically interesting but visually stunning. We’ve heard from a traveler who called it “one of Bulgaria’s most significant archaeological sites,” and that probably still holds true today.

Passing Through Haskovo and the Virgin Mary Statue

After soaking in Perperikon’s stories, the tour heads north toward Haskovo, a city famous for marking the religious heart of the area. Here, you’ll have the chance to admire what is officially the world’s tallest Virgin Mary statue, certified by Guinness. The statue’s size is just jaw-dropping—imagine a colossal monument dedicated to the patron saint of Haskovo.

Ivo, who is our guide, is very knowledgeable, detail, and patient person. He told us lots of history story and can answer any question from daily life to the history. He is full of passion when he describes the archaeological site and explained very detail for each stone and ancient structure along the road we passed. He is also very polite and his driving skill is also great. We definitely will refer him to our friend.

Extremely informative. Daniel was able to answer all our questions. However this is not for the faint of heart. The Perperikon location is high up, come prepared with good shoes, water and walking stick if needed. We would recommend this trip to others.

While in the city center, you’ll get to see the Church of the Holy Mother of God, built between 1832 and 1837, the first cathedral in modern Haskovo. It’s a beautiful example of Bulgarian Revival architecture and adds a layer of cultural depth to the trip.

Exploring Uzunzhovo: Medieval Mosque and Caravanserai

On the way to the final site, the tour makes an intriguing stop at Uzunzhovo, where you'll see a medieval mosque that was once part of a large Ottoman caravanserai. The mosque was later converted into an Orthodox Christian church in the early 20th century. The remnants of the caravanserai still stand nearby, offering a fascinating glimpse into the area's Ottoman past. This site’s unique history makes it more than just a passing stop; it’s a story of cultural shifts and historical layers.

The Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo

Finally, the highlight of the day for many will be the Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo. Discovered in 2000, this well-preserved tomb dates back to around the 3rd or 2nd century BC — the Hellenistic period. It’s cut into a rock and features a central chamber plus two side chambers. The frescoes inside are what most visitors rave about—they depict scenes of daily life and religious rituals, offering a rare window into Thracian beliefs.

We loved the way the tomb’s bright, detailed frescoes seem to bring history to life. It’s like stepping into an ancient gallery that’s been carefully preserved, and it’s a must-see for fans of archaeology and art.
