Exploring the Private ATV Jungle & Cave Adventure in Playa del Carmen
If you’re craving a mix of adrenaline, natural beauty, and a touch of culture, the Private ATV Jungle & Cave Adventure might just be what you’re looking for. While we haven’t personally taken this tour, the glowing reviews and detailed itinerary suggest it offers a solid combination of fun and discovery.
What really catches our eye are the private setting, which promises a more tailored experience, and the chance to explore a cenote and underground cave — two highlights that travelers rave about.
Mario was a wonderful tour guide! He took lots of photos and videos of my husband and I as we enjoyed both the ATV and Cenote tour. Imagine Luray Caverns but on steroids. Amazing experience! We had a 9 AM start time and we were the only ones on the excursion. 11/10 experience! Highly recommend!
This was an excellent tour. Being private we were basically on our time. Our guide made it fun and took a lot of pictures that were part of our fee. There were no hidden cost. My daughter and I both loved the ATV ride and I loved the cave. I was able to swim for awhile and it was just an awesome experience. You will get dirty and wet on this trip but to be that’s what made it fun. We drove the ATV’s to the cave and back to our starting point. No bus ride to cave. If you want something unique and out of the ordinary this is it.
Mario and Jerry were great! They took a ton of pictures for us. They pointed out neat things to look at and take note of during the tour. They were great at explaining how to use the equipment and the hand signals they would use. Be prepared with a mask or face covering, as most of the way was on a dusty back road. I would suggest goggles or something to cover your eyes to keep the dust out as well. They sell neck gaiters for a low price. Overall, it was a great time with my girl group. The ladies in the back got a lot of the dirt, though. However, the cave was beautiful. If you have mobility issues, I would not suggest as you have to go deep into the cave to get to the pool, but it is wort…
One of the best parts of this tour is how it balances adventure with educational insights. Plus, with guided support and all necessary gear included, it seems designed to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable. On the downside, some might find the 3-hour duration a bit quick if you’re looking for a more extensive experience, but for a half-day outing, it hits the sweet spot.
This tour suits those who want to see the jungle and cenotes without the hassle of large group tours or overly commercialized experiences.
Overall, if you enjoy off-the-beaten-path activities that combine a thrill with cultural learning, this adventure could be a perfect choice. It’s especially appealing for travelers who value personalized attention and want to see some of the best natural sights around Playa del Carmen.

The Itinerary in Detail
ATV Jungle Ride to the Cenote and Cave
The core of this tour is the ATV ride through Playa del Carmen’s outskirts into the lush jungle. The guides do a commendable job of explaining what you’re seeing and sharing interesting tidbits about the local environment and Mayan culture. The reviews highlight how Mario and Jerry excel at making the experience engaging, taking plenty of photos, and pointing out neat details along the way.
We were excited about this excursion and it did not disappoint! Mario was an incredible guide and truly helped us appreciate the jungle ecosystem and caves. Riding through the jungle paths was a blast although the body pays for it the next day. The caves were the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in person, and I am grateful I had the opportunity to see them. I only have 1 negative. Our tour was my husband and me and another woman and her 6 year old. The 6 year old cried about going fast, how chilly the water was in the caves, really everything. Mario truly ensured we all enjoyed the experience (which is why I can easily give 5 stars), but I think children below 14 probably would benefi…
We had the BEST time ATVing through the jungle and going into the Cenotes! Our guide was incredibly friendly and tells you a lot of fun facts along the trip while also providing everything you could need for the ride to the Cenotes (water bottles, storage to protect your stuff). He even takes videos and photos for you throughout the whole trip leaving you to fully enjoy the experience! The whole ride is beautiful and then when you get to the Cenote's… stunning! You walk through about 3 Cenotes and get to see and experience so much. Our guide was so fun to hangout with the whole time and I would recommend this trip to anyone and everyone!
Riding the ATVs was very fun and the cenote was beautiful. The fresh water was cold but it felt so nice. Our tour guide Mario was super friendly. He was telling us about the cenote and the jungle area. I recommend this tour to anyone who is staying in the Playa del Carmen area.
Once you reach the underground cave, you'll explore and swim in an underground river. The cave itself is a highlight for many, with visitors describing it as beautiful and the water as cold but refreshing. The water shoes provided make wading and swimming more comfortable, though you should wear swimwear under your clothes if you plan to get in the water. Expect to spend about an hour at this stop, which includes time for exploration and a dip in the cenote.
Return Journey
After soaking in the cenote, you'll hop back on your ATV for the ride back to the starting point. The return journey offers more scenic views and an opportunity to reflect on what you've experienced. Several reviewers have praised the smooth handling of the guides and how they made the ride fun and informative.
What Makes It Special?
For many, the knowledgeable guides and stunning scenery are the biggest draw. As one review mentions, Mario was “incredible,” providing interesting facts and ensuring safety, making the whole experience both educational and enjoyable. The fact that it’s a private tour means your party can take things at your own pace, stopping for photos or questions without feeling rushed.
The cenote swimming experience is often highlighted as a standout part. The water is described as gorgeous and serene, and many reviewers commented on how much they loved the chance to cool off after the ATV ride. The cave exploration adds an element of adventure and mystery, making it more than just a jungle tour.
Practical Considerations
The tour lasts approximately 3 hours, which is enough time to enjoy the ride, explore the cave, and relax in the cenote without feeling rushed. The included gear — helmets, bandanas, flashlights, and water shoes — helps ensure safety and comfort, though travelers should wear sunglasses and comfortable shoes for the ride, along with swimwear for the cenote.
The activity is positioned near public transportation, making it accessible for most visitors. Since most travelers book 31 days in advance, it’s clear that this is a popular option, so planning ahead is wise.

What's Not Included?
The tour does not include any meals or additional photo services beyond the ones the guides take, but reviews show that the photos provided during the trip are a nice bonus. Keep in mind that you'll want to bring your own towel if you plan to swim in the cenote.
The Value of This Experience
At $159 per person, this tour offers a good combination of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural exposure. It’s especially appealing because it’s private, meaning you won’t be stuck with a large crowd, and the guides are praised for their friendliness and knowledge. For travelers who enjoy active pursuits and want a more intimate look at the area’s natural attractions, this may be one of the better options available.
Who Should Consider This Tour?
This adventure is well-suited for adventurous travelers looking for a balance of fun and education. It’s a great choice if you’re okay with a bit of water, some physical activity, and learning about Mayan culture, all within a few hours. While families with older children would likely enjoy this, it’s less suited for very young kids due to the ATV riding and water activities. However, most adults and teens who are comfortable on ATVs and in the water will find plenty to love here.
