Matthias picked us up early morning (8 am) on a day full of sunshine and blue skies. His new Mercedes van was the perfect way to see this beautiful region of the Cotswolds and his expert driving down narrow roads lined with tall hedgerows was much appreciated. Matt’s knowledge of this area ( we visited 5 villages over the 8.5 hours) was extensive and he brought to life the histories and stories of this fabled English countryside. We stopped for lunch at a perfect pub and later in day he dropped us at a footpath so we could experience the lovely experience of strolling on a footpath ( about 20 minutes) along a stream and grazing sheep from upper Slaughter to Lower, meeting us at other end. …

We had a wonderful tour with Matt from Galahad Tours. He picked us up early at our hotel in Bath and we spent the whole day discovering the Cotswolds. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He took us to the most charming villages even some that were off the beaten path. The tour also included a great lunch in a local restaurant. The day went by really fast thanks to his great stories of the local history and his obvious passion for the region. He customized the tour to our interests and preferences. He even made recommendations for restaurants in Bath when we came back. I would highly recommend using his services for any tour you are considering in the area. You will not regret it!

Our tour guide Matt did an excellent. Envious of the amount of information he can retain. lol. Very knowledgeable in each area we visited. Was thoughtful, patient, great sense of humor. Adjusted our trip when he heard our family name was Burford so we could spend extra time there. Beautiful villages. Highly recommend.

However, a possible drawback is the price point—at over $1,350 for a group of up to 2, it’s definitely an investment. If you’re traveling solo, the cost could seem steep unless you’re after a truly tailored experience. Also, keep in mind that children over 12 are the only age group permitted, so it’s less suited for families with younger kids.

This tour is best suited for travelers who want a comfortable, engaging, and flexible way to explore the Cotswolds without the crowds or self-driving stress. If you value personalized service and are willing to pay for a more intimate experience, this could be a great fit.

Starting in Castle Combe: A Fairytale Village

Your day kicks off in Castle Combe, one of the most photographed spots in England. We love the way this village looks frozen in time—without modern intrusions like street lights or TV antennas, it feels like stepping into a storybook. The cottages and the babbling brook make for some excellent photo opportunities, and the fact that some movies like War Horse and Doctor Dolittle filmed here shows just how cinematic this spot is.

Expect about an hour and a half here, which is enough time for a stroll and some photos. Since admission is free, you can focus on soaking in the ambiance without worrying about extra costs. Many reviews highlight the village’s charm, with one reviewer mentioning it as “a favorite Hollywood filming location” and describing it as “beautiful.”

Tetbury: The Royal Connection and Market Town Charm

Next, your journey takes you to Tetbury, a town with royal ties—home to King Charles III’s residence and close to the Highgrove Estate. It’s an intriguing mix of history and modern-day royal connection. Walking through the Chipping Steps and admiring the historic weaver cottages gives you a real sense of the place’s past importance as a wool and yarn hub.

Here, you have about two hours, including free time for shopping or a quick look at His Majesty’s Highgrove Shop. This break lets you get some souvenirs or simply enjoy the relaxed village atmosphere. Reviewers mention the town’s “picturesque cottages” and the chance to explore a well-preserved historic center.

Expect about an hour and a half here, which is enough for a leisurely meal. No extra admission fees are involved, and it’s a good moment to reflect on the morning’s visits.

Stow-on-the-Wold: Market Town with a Story

Your afternoon includes a visit to Stow-on-the-Wold, famously known for its market square and a tragic scene from the English Civil War. It’s a lively town with independent shops and a photogenic main street. If you’re into browsing small boutiques or just people-watching, this stop offers plenty of both in about an hour.

The Picturesque Villages of Upper & Lower Slaughter

The drive through the Cotswolds' rolling hills takes you to Upper Slaughter, which has been used as a filming backdrop—something many visitors enjoy. An optional short walk to Lower Slaughter is recommended if weather permits; the scene looks like it’s straight out of a painting, with flower-laden cottages and a water mill.

Lower Slaughter was named the prettiest village in England in 2021, and it’s easy to see why. The water mill and quaint cottages by the River Eye make for some memorable photos. You’ll spend around two hours here, giving you plenty of time to wander, take pictures, and soak in the peaceful surroundings.

What Really Sets This Tour Apart?

The standout element is the guide’s knowledge and personality. Multiple reviews lauded the guide, Matt, describing him as “extremely knowledgeable,” “thoughtful,” and “like spending a day with a friend.” The ability to learn interesting stories and local details makes the experience richer than just sightseeing.

The private transportation aspect is another major plus. It means no waiting around for buses, no crowded vehicles, and the flexibility to spend a bit more time at a favorite spot or skip a less interesting one. Plus, the round-trip pickup and drop-off at your Bath hotel streamline the day nicely.

What Are the Downsides?

Aside from the cost, which might be steep especially for solo travelers, the tour's structure means it's best suited for those comfortable with a full day of sightseeing. The 9-hour duration includes travel time between stops, so be prepared for a busy schedule. Also, children under 12 aren’t permitted, so it’s not ideal for families with younger kids.

The itinerary is weather-dependent for some parts, especially the walk between Upper and Lower Slaughter, so a bit of flexibility and good footwear are advisable.
