Discover Sicily’s Charm on a Private Monreale, Cefalù & Castelbuono Tour from Palermo

If you’re planning to explore Sicily beyond Palermo, this private tour offers a relaxing way to see three of the island’s most iconic spots in one day. While I haven’t done this exact trip myself, the reviews and itinerary suggest it’s a solid choice for those who want a blend of art, seaside scenery, and small-town charm.

What I really like about this tour is its flexibility—you’re driven comfortably between spots, with the chance to explore at your own pace, especially if you opt for the guide upgrade. Plus, the locations themselves—Monreale’s stunning mosaics, Cefalù’s lively beaches, and Castelbuono’s medieval castle—are all worth the visit.

Beautiful views and great fun at the Cefalù beach and pedestrian street. The cathedral at Monreale is also pretty incredible as well as providing a great view of the city of Palermo.
Peter E
A fabulous trip to different locations – a hillside town, a historical beach city – all wonderful Sicilian experiences with friendly Sicilians willing to share with tourists. Cefalu is a true gem.

This was one of our greatest tours. Our driver was Dario. He was very professional, super punctual and very knowledgeable!!!! We had a very pleasant drive with him. We are absolutely obsessed with Cefalu. It had a very beautiful church and magnificent panoramic view. Dario also recommended us a very nice restaurant with the view to the see, Kentia in Cefalu. I need to tell I had the tastiest fish I have ever had in my life. If you are ever in Palermo, I highly recommend to take this tour!!!!

One thing to consider is that this tour doesn’t include a guide unless you pay extra. For some travelers, this might feel a little too independent, but it’s perfect if you enjoy wandering and discovering on your own. Overall, it’s best suited for those curious about Sicilian culture, architecture, and scenery, and who prefer the comfort and convenience of private transportation.

Start with Monreale’s Duomo

Your day begins with a visit to Monreale’s famous cathedral, an absolute must-see. Built in 1174, this Arab-Norman masterpiece is renowned for its golden mosaics depicting biblical scenes. The panoramic views overlooking Palermo and the Conca d’Oro valley are spectacular, giving you a chance to snap some memorable photos early in the day.

Most reviews highlight the beauty of this site, with one traveler noting, “The cathedral in Montreale is breathtaking. We could have stayed and taken it in for hours.” With about two hours allocated, you’ll have time to admire the mosaics, wander the cloisters, and soak in the atmosphere.

Tip: Admission costs are not included, so plan for additional entry fees if you want to go inside.

I felt very disappointed with the experience at first. It's not a tour but merely transportation. However, the private drive allowed me to explore the city at my own pace, uncovering hidden gems and enjoying the freedom to delve into each location more deeply.n gems independently. Have a lunch at the beautiful place facing the water. I bet you can drive Uber to that location for less money
Rica G
Michele was willing to change route and give in to our request of seeing some other places off the Itenerary.

The cathedral in Montreale is breathtaking. We could have stayed and taken it in for hours. The seaside town of Cefalù is beautiful. Had a wonderful lunch overlooking the sea.

Next stop: Cefalù’s Coastline and Old Town

Private Monreale, Cefalù & Castelbuono Tour, from Palermo area - Next stop: Cefalù’s Coastline and Old Town

After Monreale, the journey takes you to Cefalù, a bustling seaside town famous for its medieval cathedral, sandy beaches, and lively streets. The town’s Greek origins are visible in its architecture, and the Norman cathedral, started in 1131, is a highlight.

Cefalù is an excellent place for a relaxed stroll, lunch by the sea, and some beach time. One reviewer describes it as “beautiful,” with great seafood options and a lively vibe. You’ll spend about three hours here, so plan to explore the old town, visit the cathedral, and enjoy the sea breeze.

Note: Shops and some attractions may shut in the afternoon, so timing your visit to coincide with business hours is smart.

Concluding with Castelbuono’s Medieval Castle

Finally, you’ll visit Castelbuono, a charming hilltop town with a medieval castle built in 1316. The castle’s architecture combines Arab-Norman and Byzantine styles, and it’s built over the ruins of an ancient Byzantine town. The castle’s cube shape and arcaded walls make it distinctive.

The Driver Dario was very good and knowledgeable. We had a great time, but the castlebuono was disappointing.
David W
We had a great day shop and at the beach. The driver was great and knowledgeable. Onyime and clean vehicles. Great food and thebtrip livedbuo to expectations. Ciao!
William T
Our day was great with Danielle. He was prompt for our pickup. Very polite and accommodating. Very professional and personable. There wider wildfires that had major roads closed from Cefalu to Palermo. Some of his colleagues were stuck in traffic. He found backroads and we were back in Palermo with no problems. After he dropped us off. He found my phone in his vehicle and called the hotel immediately for me to pick it up. My phone has all of my cards and drivers license. Thank you!!!

The highlight here is the Cappella Palatina—a beautifully decorated chapel built in 1683 with marble, stucco, and artworks that celebrate the local noble family. Spending an hour in Castelbuono gives you a glimpse into Sicily’s feudal past and a chance to explore the quaint streets.

Admission fees are not included, but the castle and chapel are significant sights to see.

Be aware that if you’re expecting a guided experience, you might need to pay extra or prepare to explore on your own.

The trip out of Palermo was breathtaking. Dario was very flexible & offered alternatives for the day. He was cheerful as well as informative . Cefalu is beautiful & the Mediterranean was calm & warm. Lunch with fresh seafood & great service added to the day.
Robin M
Fantastic tour. Our drive was amazing so informative, drove very safe through some very small streets. It is self guided when you get to the locations but the drive is wonderful and every stop is beautiful. Cefalu lunch was fantastic and what a beautiful beach. I highly recommend this tour.

The cost is around $355 per person, which can seem steep, but when you factor in private transportation, the comfort, and the convenience, it offers good value—especially if you’re short on time or prefer a flexible schedule.

We had a wonderful time with Dario traveling to Monreale and Cefalu. The van was brand new and super comfortable. The pace was relaxed and Dario was informative. He even helped me in my quest to learn more Italian.
David S
Our driver Dario did a great job getting us safely to & from our destinations. He suggested skipping Castelbuono to spend more time (including lunch) in Cefalu, which was fine. Would prefer driver to speak better English and provide a little more commentary rather than just being a driver.
Robert L
I booked this trip during a stop in Palermo on our cruise. Marco was great and we had a carefree day in Cefalu to enjoy lunch and the sea side! Marco was able to tailor the trip to make the most of our relaxing day.

If you’re traveling with family or a group that prefers a relaxed pace, this tour could work well—just keep in mind that the stops are more about sightseeing than guided storytelling.
