If you’ve been dreaming about Maui’s famous Road to Hana, you’re not alone. While the drive itself is legendary for its curves and stunning views, tackling it on your own can sometimes feel more stressful than fun. That’s where a private, guided tour really makes a difference.
We’ve looked into one of the top-rated options offered by Makana Maui Adventures, and what stands out is how personalized and well-organized this experience is.
What we love most? First, the customizable itinerary allows you to focus on what interests you most—whether it’s waterfalls, beaches, or local food. Second, the experienced guides are clearly passionate and knowledgeable, making the journey both fun and educational.
Absolutely incredible. I had initially booked this because I really wanted to hike the pipiwai trail and you CAN do that if you want, however its almost 6 hrs to go around all Haleakala so, you will be spending the majority of your time driving to the 2 hour hike, and then driving back. Keone asked us what our goals were and we decided it would be best to let a local tell us what he recommends and I'm so glad we did. We didn't hike pipiwai, and instead we got to go swimming in 2 different waterfalls, 1 was almost private with no one else there, we got to stop for snacks, eat a coconut, explore a cave with no one else there, which was probably the coolest part, climb a Banyan tree, see the ra…
The customization was crucial to our decision and Demian made it just perfect for our desires. We would do it again and again!
Was a great day. It was awesome to see all that we did. We decided there's not enough time in one day to see everything so plan to come back in the future to explore more of the island. Damien was great showed us some amazing places totally worth it.
A potential concern? With a price tag of $500 per person, it’s definitely on the higher end, but considering the personal touch and the convenience, many find it well worth the splurge.
This tour is ideal for travelers who want to relax, avoid the tricky drive themselves, and really soak in Maui’s natural beauty without the hassle of planning every stop. If you’re visiting Maui for the first time or celebrating a special occasion, this private experience could be just what you need.

The Itinerary: What You’ll Experience
This is where the tour really shines. Each stop is designed to showcase Maui’s stunning landscapes, rich plant life, and vibrant culture.
Many thanks to Zak for a wonderful day for our family of seven (ranging in age from tween to in their seventies). First of all, driving this road is a specialized skill in and of itself. Zak did a fantastic job. He knew exactly where to pull over at different sites so that we were safe, and once you experience being there you will understand how crucial this is. There was so much beauty on this tour–beaches, plants and animals, a cave, waterfalls, Hawaiian Home Land communities, and small businesses that showcase some of the wonderful goods that come from Maui. There was something for everyone. Zak was very knowledgeable and warm, and we enjoyed learning from him.
Great experience from start to finish. 10 hour trip in all. Great food and beautiful scenery. Demien did a super job customizing it to our desires. Great swim in secluded waterfalls with no other people around! Thankful for his experience driving as well. Would never want to drive the roads with hairpin turns and no place for two cars to pass each other. Local knowledge was important!!
Our wonderful guide, Keola, was great. He obviously enjoyed sharing his love for this area’s culture, beaches, food, and plants. He was also a skilled driver on this challenging road.
Bamboo Forest and Waterfalls
The adventure kicks off with a walk through lush bamboo forests, which often leads to hidden waterfall spots. Multiple reviews highlight the beauty of these locations, with guests noting the optional hikes to secret waterfalls. “Zak took us to secluded waterfalls with no one around,” one reviewer shares, emphasizing the exclusivity and tranquility of these stops.
Waikamoi Nature Trail and Keanae Point
Expect light hikes and unbeatable views from the Waikamoi Nature Trail, perfect for stretching your legs and taking in the rainforest scenery. Then, head to Keanae Point, a rugged peninsula surrounded by lava rock, offering panoramic ocean vistas and a chance to enjoy local snacks. Many travelers comment on the breathtaking scenery here, with one describing it as “a picturesque view that sticks with you.”
Hana Gold and Farm Stand
Food lovers will appreciate the visit to Hana Gold, a cacao farm where you can sample Maui-grown chocolates, jams, and popsicles—an indulgent highlight for many. The nearby Hana Farms stand is another favorite, offering farm-to-table pizzas, banana bread, and salads, often praised for their quality and atmosphere. One reviewer called it “some of the best local snacks on the island,” making it a perfect midday break.
Wai'anapanapa State Park and Lava Tubes
The Black Sand Beach at Wai'anapanapa State Park is a must-see, with its striking volcanic sands and coastal lava tubes. Many mention the opportunity to explore caves or hike along the ancient king trail. The Hana Lava Tubes are another favorite, though admission here is a small extra fee. Visitors describe the lava formations as “massive and impressive,” adding a sense of adventure to the day.
Red Sand Beach and Hamoa Beach
For the more active types, the hike to Red Sand Beach is a highlight—an effort that pays off with stunning views and photograph-worthy scenery. The hike is for those comfortable with uneven terrain, as one review notes. Hamoa Beach offers a peaceful spot for swimming or relaxing, with many guests remarking on its beauty and calm vibe.
Scenic Views and Waterfalls on the Loop
The full Road to Hana Loop takes you around the backside of Haleakala, with panoramic views and chances to spot wildlife. Wailua Falls is the largest waterfall along the route, often described as “breathtaking,” with swim options available for the brave. Finishing at Ho'okipa Beach Park, you can watch professional surfers and see giant green sea turtles—an authentic local experience.
