If you’re planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta, a whale watching tour is often high on the list—and for good reason. This particular private tour offers an intimate 3-hour experience, giving you the chance to see humpback whales in their natural habitat, along with dolphins and even turtles.
While we haven’t personally been on this exact tour, plenty of travelers have shared their impressions, and it seems to deliver exactly what nature lovers crave: close-up sightings and a relaxed vibe.
What really caught our eye about this experience is the small-group setting, which means you’ll enjoy a more personalized and flexible adventure. Plus, the guarantee of seeing whales—especially during the season when pods arrive in the bay—is a real highlight. The only thing to keep in mind is that, as with many boat trips, the timing can sometimes be a little flexible, so patience and a love for the water are key.
We did this private whale watching excursion while in Puerto Vallarta as part of a cruise stop. I want to be clear that through no fault of the tour operator, the walk from the cruise port to the meeting point was pretty brutal — busy sidewalk, lots of traffic, and longer than expected. We walked there and back, and in hindsight, a short cab ride would have been the way to go. We did end up waiting a bit longer than planned for pickup, but once we were on the boat and headed out, it was absolutely worth it. It was a short ride before we started seeing whales, and we saw quite a few. We were able to get some really great photos, which made the whole experience even better. The whales we saw…
A spectacular day, we saw many whales, thousands of whales, dolphins and turtles, a great day!!!!! I recommend both tours, the snorkeling one too.
My children and I arrived at the meeting point at 10am. The boat did not arrive until after 11am. We waited for over an hour at the dock. If it were not for the poor communication prior to the boat arriving, I would have given the tour 5 stars. Captain Luis apologized for being late. He was very kind and controlled the boat very well since the waters were a bit choppy. We saw whales, many dolphins and sea turtles. Luis offered to take us to Los Arcos also. But we decided to head back because I got seasick. My kids had a wonderful time.
This tour appears to suit those wanting a family-friendly, easygoing outing with chances for memorable wildlife encounters. If you’re okay with a 3-hour window and appreciate the chance for some truly spectacular views, this could be a perfect addition to your Puerto Vallarta trip.

Setting the Scene: Puerto Vallarta’s Bay of Banderas
This tour kicks off from the Los Peines dock, where you’ll hop aboard a vessel prepared for a relaxed cruise. The Bay of Banderas, with its calm waters, is the perfect spot for whale watching, especially during the season when thousands of whales arrive annually. We loved the way the boat heads straight into the bay, with the captain scanning the water for signs of activity—dolphins, whales, and sometimes even sea turtles.
What You Can Expect During the Tour
Once you’re underway, the main goal is to spot whales. The tour lasts about 3 hours, which is a sweet spot—long enough to potentially see plenty but not so long that it drags. You can bring snacks and drinks along, and the boat carries a cooler with ice, making it easy to stay refreshed. Most travelers agree that the trip is laid-back, with the captain taking care to find the best viewing spots.
The Whale and Dolphin Sightings
The highlight for most is seeing the humpback whales breaching or jumping out of the water—an incredible spectacle that leaves you in awe. One reviewer described their day as “spectacular,” noting they saw many whales, dolphins, and even turtles. The experience is especially magical when you see the babies close to the boat, which is often guaranteed during peak season. The sense of closeness and natural beauty makes this tour feel genuinely special.
Authenticity and Authentic Encounters
Travelers have shared that the boat operator is attentive and considerate—”he took it easy as we had our six-year-old on board,” one review mentioned. The small group size ensures you get personalized attention, and the captain’s expertise improves your chances of spotting wildlife. Several reviews highlight the stunning views of the whales, making the trip feel like a rare reward rather than just a routine tour.

Customer Experiences and Honest Feedback
While most reviews are highly positive, some mention minor hiccups like delayed departures—”the boat did not arrive until after 11 am”—but these seem to be logistical issues rather than deal-breakers. The important part is that the tour offers a full refund if canceled at least 24 hours in advance. Several travelers appreciated how the crew provided water and helped make the experience comfortable, even with young children on board.
A beautiful and enjoyable time on the water. As are timelines in Mexico, we left a little late. Asked if there was drinking water on the boat and they went to get some for us. The boat operator was excellent. He took it easy as we had our six-year old on board. We saw several whales. Had an excellent morning.
We had a great time on this experience. We were glad to learn that there was a cover on the boat so we were not in full sun all day. Our captain helped us find lots of whales!
Is It Worth the Price?
At $315 for up to 8 people, this private tour offers a personalized experience that many feel is worth the cost. For families or small groups seeking quality time on the water, it’s a good deal—particularly since you're not sharing the boat with strangers. Considering the possibility of seeing numerous whales and other marine life, many see it as a valuable investment in a memorable adventure.
Weather and Season Considerations
Since this activity depends heavily on good weather, there's always a chance of cancellation if conditions aren't ideal. But if the weather cooperates, you'll be in for a breathtaking display of marine activity. The best time to go is during whale season, when the pods arrive in the bay, typically from late fall into early spring.
Who Will Enjoy This Tour?
This private whale watching trip is suited to travelers who want a more intimate, flexible experience. It’s particularly good for those who love wildlife and are eager to see whales in action. Families with children will enjoy it, especially given the promise of close-up sightings, but it’s equally a great choice for couples or small groups seeking a relaxed day on the water.
If you're after a full-on adventure with lots of action, this might feel a little mellow, but for those looking for gorgeous scenery and the chance to witness nature’s majesty, it’s an excellent pick. Keep in mind, it’s a 3-hour window, so if you’re hoping for a longer exploration or snorkeling, you might want to consider other tours.
The Sum Up

This private 3-hour whale watching tour in Puerto Vallarta offers a splendid way to connect with marine life while enjoying a tailored, relaxed experience. The small group setting means you'll get personalized attention, and the likelihood of seeing humpback whales, dolphins, and turtles makes it a highlight for wildlife enthusiasts. The ability to bring your own food and drinks adds to the comfort, and the overall vibe is family-friendly, especially during the right season.
While the tour has some minor logistical hiccups, the genuine encounters with whales and the stunning views make it well worth considering. If you seek a peaceful, intimate, and wildlife-focused adventure, this tour could be just what you need in Puerto Vallarta.
