Incredibly beautiful scenery. We went during winter, so there was no traffic – not even at the borders. Zach was an excellent driver and guide.

Ivan was an outstanding driver. Extremely knowledgeable and made the drive pass by quickly. He had excellent recommendations and taught us a lot about the area, culture & history. Montenegro was beautiful and very enjoyable to explore, but Ivan makes this tour a 5/5 stars.

However, it’s worth being aware that the border crossing can sometimes be slow and that the tour involves a good amount of driving—something to consider if you’re not keen on long travel days.

This experience suits travelers who appreciate a private, customizable itinerary and are comfortable with a full day of sightseeing — especially those who love scenic drives, historic towns, and a touch of adventure outside the hustle of Dubrovnik.

It’s less ideal if you’re on a tight schedule or dislike long bus-like journeys, but overall, it’s a rewarding way to see Montenegro’s highlights with ease.

This tour is a full day and gives a great overview of the country of Montenegro. Even the scenery from the car helped us get the flavor and feel of another country. Our driver and guide Milko did a great job of driving and he was very knowledgeable of the roads and area and where the traffic was. He kindly escorted us to a boat to take us across to see our Lady of the Rocks and also suggested a great spot for dinner in Budva. He kept in touch with us and if we wanted to leave a spot earlier or later he was right there to pick us up. We enjoyed the ferry on our way back. The border was congested but that couldn’t be helped. We would highly recommend this tour.

We really enjoyed our day trip to Montenegro. Ivan, our driver and tour guide was fantastic – very professional, knowledgeable about the history and culture, witty and a great driver. It was a wonderful day. Thanks Ivan!

Ivan is a native of the area and very knowledgeable about the history and current events. We learned so much from him during our drive. It was fun to see a little of Montenegro and explore the towns of Parast and Kotor on the Bay of Kotor. Beautiful area with the mountains coming right down to the water and so much history. The walled city of Kotor was a particular highlight and the restaurant Ivan recommended was great! Also important, he was a safe driver. I would highly recommend this tour.

Crossing into Montenegro

Border crossings can sometimes be unpredictable, and some reviews mention primitive facilities or longer wait times—something worth keeping in mind if you prefer a smooth, swift transition. Once across, the scenery shifts to sweeping bays and rugged coastlines, making the drive itself a highlight.

Passengers often remark on the beauty of the coast roads as they wind around bays, offering plenty of picture opportunities.

Visiting Perast: Small Village, Big Charm

Your first stop is Perast, a tiny yet striking village perched at the foot of St. Elijah Hill. Despite some destruction from a late 20th-century earthquake, Perast retains a lot of its old-world charm, with Gothic and Baroque architecture lining the streets.

A highlight here is the optional boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, a small island with a church and museum. While the boat ride incurs a small extra fee (~10 euros), many travelers find it worthwhile for the chance to see the island’s chapel filled with art and local history.

One reviewer called it “a gorgeous village” with "a very Baroque feel," and appreciated the opportunity to explore at leisure.

Exploring Kotor: A Medieval Marvel

Next up is Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its well-preserved medieval walls and labyrinth of narrow streets. Here, you’ll get a couple of hours to wander independently, soaking in the atmosphere and exploring at your own pace.

Don’t miss the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, which is often highlighted as a significant stop for history and architecture lovers. Many reviews praise kotor’s charming streets and stunning views. One reviewer mentioned, “the city is a fun stroll,” and appreciated the freedom to explore without a rush.

The town’s maritime history is apparent everywhere, and you might find yourself at a cafe, enjoying local snacks or simply taking photos of the scenic harbor.

Optional Extension: Budva, the Coastal Gem

For those wanting to experience a bit more of Montenegro’s lively coastal scene, the option to include Budva is invaluable. This walled city on the Adriatic offers a stark contrast to Kotor: a more vibrant, bustling vibe with beaches, cafes, and a lively nightlife.

The tour allows a couple of hours for lunch and relaxation—your own expense, of course. Many travelers use this time to unwind on the beaches or wander the streets, soaking up the Mediterranean atmosphere. The ferry ride back from Budva (included in the extension) offers a scenic wrap-up to your day, with views of the bay that many reviews say are “breathtaking.”

Returning to Dubrovnik

After a full day of culture and sightseeing, you’ll head back to Dubrovnik. The drive includes a final ferry crossing, if you’ve opted for the extension, which many find to be a peaceful and scenic way to end the trip. Your driver will drop you off at your hotel, ending a day that combines comfort, flexibility, and a generous dose of Montenegro’s highlights.
