For our family of 4 with different energy levels and dietary needs, it was great to have this private tour. The textile house and mezcal tour were very interesting and zero pressure to buy. The driver was on time and courteous and we appreciated that he also took us to the tule tree. What would have been better is if the driver also could have been more of a guide – telling us about the area, the history or the different stops, rather than just functioning as a driver.

The first and most memorable stop on our tour was to the workshop of the Vasquez family of master weavers in Teotitlan del Valle. We were treated to a thorough tour of the entire process of weaving, from carding and spinning the wool, through the dyeing process, and finally weaving rugs and other items using the same ancient patterns and dyes the Zapotec people originated thousands of years ago. Everyone was so welcoming and eager to share their expertise with us. Next, our excellent guide, Jeshua, took us to Hierve el Agua, to see the fascinating petrified waterfalls and wander around the pools, although we didn't go swimming. Since Jeshua wasn't allowed to accompany us to the waterfalls, i…

We had a great time with Javier! We were impressed by his knowledge of the history, culture, and flora of the region. Driving was smooth, everything was seamless.

On the flip side, be aware that some reviews mention last-minute guide changes and a lack of detailed commentary, so it’s worth considering if you prefer a deeply guided experience.

This tour is especially well-suited for travelers who enjoy a blend of outdoor adventure, cultural discovery, and local flavors without feeling rushed. Whether you’re a first-timer in Oaxaca or a repeat visitor wanting a tailored day, this trip can fit your needs. Had a great time yesterday visiting the waterfalls and mezcal tasting at the distillery. However the highlight of our tour was our wonderful driver Alberto! Such a lovely guy and so helpful and insightful.

We had a great experience on this tour. We took our 4 years old and 20 months old with us and we all enjoyed the adventure. Bathing in the natural pools was awesome, we skipped the hike to accommodate for our grumpy toddler and it was the right call as we could still get a good view of the waterfall and get some awesome pics .This was the kiddos favorite by far. The drive is epic (great views and dirt roads) but our van was super comfy and Javier is a master driver in bustling Oaxacan traffic and on mountain roads. The mezcal tour at Don Agave was great too with a delicious lunch and a very knowledgeable guide and this was my husband's favorite. My personal favorite was touring the gallery o…

My wife and I really enjoyed our tour. It was wonderful learning about the handmade rugs and other products at Teotilan. We enjoyed our hike and chilling at the pools afterwards at Hierve el Agua which is a beautiful sight and the mezcal tasting was perfect to end off the tour. 5/5 definitely worth it. Javier was an excellent tour guide and driver.

Expect to be wowed by the views—these mineral-rich formations look almost impossible, as if nature decided to sculpt its own version of waterfalls from stone. The water pools are perfect for a refreshing swim, and many reviews mention how stunning and peaceful the setting is.

However, keep in mind that the admission ticket is not included in the price, which adds about 70 MXN per person. If you're planning to swim or walk the trails, be prepared for that extra cost. Some visitors note that the pick-up time can vary, so it’s good to stay flexible.

Cultural Insight: Mezcal Tasting

Next, you’ll head to a mezcal distillery—Don Agave. Here, you’ll learn how mezcal is traditionally made, a process that has been passed down through generations. The tasting experience is relaxed, offering different flavors to try, and a great way to understand why mezcal is such an integral part of Mexican culture.

Reviews highlight that this part of the tour is free of admission fees and is a good chance to purchase authentic, certified mezcal directly from the producer. Many travelers enjoy the tasting and find it a worthwhile cultural experience, especially if they’re new to mezcal or want to understand its diverse flavors.

Traditional Textiles: Teotitlán del Valle

Finally, the tour wraps up with a visit to Teotitlán del Valle, a village renowned for its weaving traditions. You’ll visit a local artisan’s home and workshop, where you can observe the intricate process of creating traditional rugs and textiles, often using pre-Hispanic techniques.

The reviews are glowing here; travelers say it’s a thorough and engaging experience. One reviewer shared, “We were treated to a thorough tour of the entire process of weaving, from carding and spinning to dyeing and weaving.” It’s a great opportunity to buy handcrafted souvenirs and support local artisans.

Additional Details and Considerations

The tour lasts about 8 hours, which makes for a full day but not an overwhelming one. The price is $309.99 per group, which is reasonable considering it includes private transportation, hotel pickup, and the variety of experiences. Bear in mind, lunch, snacks, and admissions are not included, so you might want to bring some snacks or plan for a meal on your own.

While the itinerary is flexible, remember that the tour is primarily driven by your interests—so if you’re not keen on a particular stop, it’s worth communicating that with your driver or guide.

Authenticity and Real Experiences from Travelers

Many reviews mention their guides’ knowledge, with some praising the local guides at Hierve el Agua for making the scenery come alive. Others appreciate the friendly driver, with one noting, “Javier was an excellent guide and driver, knowledgeable and accommodating.”

On the downside, some travelers experienced last-minute guide replacements or felt the guide lacked depth in explaining the sites, which highlights the importance of setting expectations beforehand. The description states that the driver speaks English, but some reviews suggest communication might be limited, so keep that in mind.
