From what we’ve seen in reviews and descriptions, it’s a chance to witness a rare, heartfelt moment that connects you directly with marine conservation efforts.

What makes this tour stand out? First, the knowledgeable guides are highly praised for their bilingual abilities and passion for educating visitors. Second, the experience of releasing baby turtles into the ocean has been described as both thrilling and emotional.

That said, a few things are worth considering — mainly, the price (which is very reasonable for the experience) and the fact that transportation isn’t included, so you’ll need to organize your own way there. This may not be for everyone, especially if you prefer private transport or shorter, less involved activities.

We loved our experience especially learning about the sea turtles beforehand – it added significance to the release knowing the dangers these little turtles face the moment they are are laid in their nest on the beach. Not going to lie, made me a little emotional seeing the little guys scuttle toward the crashing waves to start their lives. Eddie, our guide was great! We stopped by a mangrove-y area on our way to the turtle habitat to see some crocodiles. But we were quite a good distance away and just steps from the beach, so we never felt like we were in danger! He also waited for the whole group to get their uber/taxis when the day was over – we appreciated that extra layer of cautiousne…

What’s the core of this tour?

This is a two-hour adventure rooted in conservation and natural beauty. Starting in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll meet your guide at a designated spot and then head toward a camp nestled in a mangrove reserve. It’s a chance to see the estuary’s wildlife, learn about the work biologists do to protect sea turtles, and witness a baby turtle release during sunset — truly a sight to remember.

How does the itinerary unfold?

  • Meeting Point (Cookieguidepv):
This is your starting point. Once everyone is gathered, your group will be driven or walk to the camp. The location is near Marina Vallarta, with good accessibility, especially if you arrange your own transport. The guide will initiate the journey with a friendly introduction, setting the tone for what’s ahead.

  • Visit to Playa Boca de Tomates:
The second stop is at the turtle camp, where you’ll receive a comprehensive environmental education talk. Expect to learn about the various animals in the estuary, including crocodiles, which many reviewers mention seeing. The guides do a great job explaining conservation efforts, which makes the experience more meaningful — you’ll leave with a better understanding of what’s involved in saving these creatures.

  • Turtle Nesting & Releasing:
The climax is observing the hatching of baby turtles and, if timing allows, releasing them into the ocean. Many reviews rave about this part — it’s exciting, emotional, and adorable to see tiny turtles making their way to the sea, especially during a beautiful sunset.

What’s included and what’s not?

All the essential admission fees and donations are covered, along with bottled water to keep you hydrated. The tour price is quite reasonable considering the educational content, wildlife encounters, and the rare chance to release turtles.

However, transportation isn’t included, so you’ll need to organize your own way to the meeting point. Also, if you want to take photos — which many travelers do — note that photographs come at an extra cost. This could be a minor inconvenience but also an opportunity to be fully present without a camera.

How is the group size?

With a maximum of 23 travelers, the atmosphere tends to be intimate enough for everyone to get attention from guides and ask questions. The reviews consistently mention the guides’ friendliness and their willingness to answer all kinds of questions, adding to the educational value.

Incredible amazing and awesome experience with the beautiful baby sea turtles. Eduardo was so passionate about this Conversation Project and was an engaging and informative speaker who presented great information to educate and raise awareness about turtles. I would volunteer in a heartbeat if I lived here. Kelly from Canada

We had a fantastic time. Our group lead, Eddie, was knowledgeable and interactive wirh the group. The turtles were, as expected, incredibly cute! I was pleased to see the protocols in place to protect the turtles the whole way through. As a bonus, we also got to observe crocodiles relating in a mangrove area that we walked by to the turtle release site. If we ever come back to the area, we would do this again. We also had the option to buy photos that another staff member takes throughout the experience, which we got. It's nice to have some photos of the whole group and live in the moment rather than trying to snap photos ourselves.

I love turtles and doing this release of baby turtles on my birthday is an amazing experience. I hope more people can do this tour to educate ourselves about turtle conservation in PV.

The sunset release is another crowd favorite. Guests describe it as a heartwarming moment, with some calling it “the best sunset of my life.” The sight of tiny turtles heading out to sea is universally described as magical.

Many reviews emphasize the personal, up-close experience with the turtles — it’s not just watching from a distance, but actively participating in their release. This makes the tour feel authentic and personal.

The Realities and Considerations

Release of Sea Turtles in Camp Tortuguero - The Realities and Considerations

While the tour is highly praised, it’s worth noting a couple of practical points. First, since transportation isn’t included, you’ll want to plan ahead if staying far from the meeting point. Uber or local taxis are a common choice, but that adds to the overall cost and planning.

Second, the duration is about 2 hours, which is manageable, but be prepared for an easy walk (some sections may be wet or sandy). Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended, especially if you want to get close to the nests or crocodile zones.

Lastly, because this is a nature-based activity, it’s susceptible to weather conditions. If it’s stormy or windy, the tour might be canceled or rescheduled, but you’ll be offered a full refund or a different date.
