Thinking about a different way to see San Diego beyond the beaches and city streets? The San Diego Off Road Tours offer a chance to get behind the wheel of a four-wheel-drive vehicle and venture into scenic, less-traveled terrain near the border area. While I haven’t personally taken this tour, reviews and info paint a compelling picture of it being a fun, engaging, and safe adventure.
What I really like about this experience is its private, customizable nature—it’s just you and your group, which means plenty of personal attention and flexibility. Plus, the stunning views of the Otay Wilderness Area, stretching as far as 115 miles into the US and Mexico, seem to make the trip worth every penny.
On the flip side, some might find the price a bit steep at $450 for up to five people, but considering the private experience and high-quality vehicles, many feel it’s good value.
Angelo was an amazing host! What a wonderful experience! Not only did he make it memorable by allowing us to drive our own vehicle but he encouraged my boys to participate in climbing the hills while also getting out of his vehicle and taking videos for us. He also provided a lot of information about the area along the tour. Something we will never forget. We are from Sacramento and it was our first time in San Diego. This was our first adventure and it was well worth it. Probably the best experience of the whole trip. Loved being able to be alone in a vehicle with my family while he guided us. Would definitely book again!
Angelo was a great guide! Very personable and knowledgeable. Was definitely an adventure. Would recommend for anyone to do. Beautiful views, reliable truck, great experience.
This was one of our favorite things we did on our trip! So much fun and Angelo was so helpful and made sure we had the best experience! Our kids loved his copilot tank!
If you’re someone who enjoys adventure, scenic overlooks, and learning about borderland landscapes, this tour could be perfect. It’s especially suited to travelers who want a mix of thrill and scenery without the usual large-group tour vibe. Families, couples, or groups of friends looking for a memorable day out will likely find a lot to love here.

These panoramic spots showcase the U.S.-Mexico border and give travelers a chance to snap incredible photos.
The main stop is on a rumpled peak within federal wilderness, which offers breathtaking views. As one reviewer, Kyle, put it, “We made stops at beautiful overlooks getting to see San Diego and Tijuana.” These viewpoints are often the highlight, giving you a sense of remote wilderness combined with the proximity of two vibrant border cities.
The route is adaptable, with options to explore easier trails or tackle more challenging terrain. Many reviews mention the smooth communication via radios, which enhances safety and helps guides point out interesting features along the way, from WWII bunkers to local flora and fauna.
This was the most unique and memorable part of our San Diego trip! Angelo has very highend vehicles that are not only capable off-road rigs, but kept us comfortable and cool as well. His knowledge about the borderlands area really added a lot to our enjoyment of the trip. We would reccomend this trip to anyone either from or visiting the San Diego area, as there is no other experience in the region quite like this one. Seeing the Borderlands from on top of the mountain will give everyone (even a local) a totally new perspective on the US-Mexico border, San Diego, and Tijuana. The rugged beauty of an entire region is on full display when you can see 45+ miles in every direction. Angelo has …
I don't even know where to begin. Angelo (guide/owner) was awesome. He was ready to go as soon as we arrived. We hopped into our land cruisers and we were off. Little ride ro the mountain but once there it was on. Awesome communication via radios and pointed out the best views and very informative about the area. We were visiting from NJ and wished we lived here to be able to do this and hang with Angelo more. My wife was hesitant to drive but she did it with the encouragement and precise instructions from Angelo and she loved it. Considering coming back some time to do their 2 day over night camping experience. It was just awesome. Do it. Don't wait. Book now. You won't regret it.
If you are looking for an adventurous excursion during your time in San Diego, look no further! We've done Jeep tours before, but never found one that you can drive the Jeep yourself…until now! We were able to Lyft out to the meeting point no problem from downtown San Diego. Angelo was out and ready to go when we arrived and we started promptly! We drove out to the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area and did the intermediate level – we have only a small amount of off-roading experience and this was perfect. Angelo guided us on the walkie talkie around each section and we made lots of pitstops to take pictures and see the views. We got great views of San Diego and Tijuana and a thrilling offroadi…
