Planning a trip to São Miguel and wondering if a quick tour can really showcase the island’s beauty? From what we’ve seen, this two-day experience offers a solid snapshot of what makes the Azores special. It’s an engaging mix of volcanic landscapes, picturesque villages, and local food, all curated to give you a taste of the island’s highlights.

What we particularly like is how well-organized the itinerary seems—covering major sights without feeling rushed—and the inclusion of local tastings such as pineapple and tea. Plus, the guides appear knowledgeable and friendly, making the experience all the more memorable.

However, a potential drawback is that some reviews suggest the tour tries to fit in too many stops, leaving little time at each one. If you prefer slow, in-depth exploration over quick views, this might feel a bit hurried.

Great tour of both sides of the island. Quite a bit of driving but highly recommended if you are short on time and don’t want to do the planning and driving yourself. Lunch on both days was great as well. If you want to see the hydrangeas, I recommend late May or June. It was a bit rainy and misty at the end of April/beginning of May but still very beautiful.

We had two days, and it was the perfect tour to see as much as you can within a short time span. Andrea was a very good driver and fun to be around. It was rainy and very foggy on day two, and although she tried to rearrange the daily schedule, we didn’t get to enjoy the special views. Nonetheless, it is to be expected when traveling the Azores. Lunch option is practical food, but includes beer and wine, and it gives you the opportunity to get to know your travel companions. Thanks a lot for a very good overview of Sao Miguel Island. We loved it.

Come prepared for swimming on the day you go to Furnas. It's a great opportunity to try out the water from the geothermal pools. Be prepared to get in and out of a van for each stop. It's well worth your time and energy to take this two day tour. The scenery is wonderful, the views amazing, and the stops to visit places like the tea plantation very interesting. Both guides we had were knowledgeable and had interesting details to share about the people and places we saw. They were also thoughtful and attentive, with the first one doing his commentary in both Portuguese and English, because the day there were both of those languages represented among the guests. He moved back and fort…

This tour works best for travelers who want a rundown of São Miguel in a short period, especially if you’re eager to see the highlights without obsessing over every detail.

Great guide great places to see But cramming 8 people (some are on the large size ) into a minivan in uncomfortable to say the least. If you were the unlucky one to sit in the back row middle seat. You could see nothing , also spending time to visit some areas like the fish town The drug infested area was unnecessary and boring

Such a beautiful island. Everywhere is a beautiful view. The guides were informative without talking constantly which I liked. The tours did not feel rushed.

Itinerary Breakdown

São Miguel in Two Days: A Perfect Blend of Nature & Culture - Itinerary Breakdown

Day 1: Western Wonders and Coastal Views

Your adventure kicks off early with a pickup from your hotel, followed by a scenic drive to Miradouro da Ponta do Escalvado. Here, you’ll get breathtaking vistas of cliffs, the Atlantic Ocean, and the islets of Mosteiros. Reviews describe this as a “magnificent” spot, great for photos and soaking in the rugged coastline.

Next, you’ll descend into Mosteiros, a charming village famous for its black sand beach and natural pools. Many guests mention how atmospheric this place is, with some sharing stories like the love legend tied to the rocks. Locals and visitors alike enjoy unwinding here during sunset—ideal for a picnic or just relaxing after the drive.

From there, a quick stop at Miradouro da Lomba do Vasco offers sweeping views inland of the volcano’s interior and the ocean. It’s a brief but impressive look at the island’s volcanic makeup.

The highlight of the day is undoubtedly Sete Cidades, where the twin lagoons sit inside a giant caldera. The village itself is picturesque, with cobbled streets and a charming church. Here, a regional buffet lunch is served, giving you a taste of authentic Azorean cuisine. Reviewers frequently mention how good this meal is, making it more than just fuel for the day.

The sites were awesome and Carlos was entertaining. The group of eight in our van were so friendly making it even better. Carlos went the extra mile with the arrangements which made all the difference for me.

It’s a lot covered over the 2 days which sounds great but when considering how much time is taken to drive… there’s not much time given to each spot. Instead I think quality should be prioritised over quantity. Having the opportunity to walk around a lake, rather quickly getting a photo then leave after 20minutes. If you’re looking to just get a photo of each place, great. Otherwise if you want to experience and enjoy, it’s probably not the best. The pineapple plantation was a video and walk around the pineapple then leave. So things are rushed. I understand there is time restraints however this should be taken into consideration to remove a few visits in order to enjoy more t…

Saw many interesting sights. And enough time to see each beautiful area and take photos. Driver was very informative

Post-lunch, the tour continues with stops at Cerrado das Freiras and Vista do Rei, both offering iconic views of the blue and green lagoons. Vista do Rei is the postcard spot—so much so that many reviews mention it as a “must-see” for its breathtaking panoramas.

Before heading to Ribeira Grande, there’s a visit to the Ananás Santo António pineapple plantation. The guided tour of the greenhouse and tasting session reveal how unique Azorean pineapples are—grown in glass greenhouses for over two years, they’re a regional delicacy.

The day wraps up in Ribeira Grande, an authentic town with historic architecture, lush scenery, and a relaxed atmosphere. If time permits, an optional stop at the Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint allows you to see one of the most stunning lakes in the island, often described as a pristine natural sanctuary.

Day 2: Eastern Highlights and Volcanic Mysteries

After a relaxed breakfast, Day 2 begins with a visit to Vila Franca do Campo, the island’s former capital. The small marina and the iconic islet are picture-perfect, giving you a glimpse into local life.

Our tour guide, Andrea, was very knowledgeable and personable. The challenge was that the order of the days was switched, even though the description references the thermal pools were on the 2nd day. Ours was changed to the 1st day but we had no notice and no bathing suit, so it was very disappointing. I only spoke with the guide about this, not any of the other guests, but that concern was used against us. So, we only did 1 of the 2 days with this company, did the 2nd tour, the West side, with another company and had a great time. Bottom line, if doing multiple days, bring EVERYTHING, as you do not know what day events will occur.
Inessa B
I had an amazing time both days, with Andrea and with Henry. The views are out of this world. On the second day, Henry drove up to the top of volcano in the fog, and some expert driving it was, very safe and very exciting! Highly recommend.

The east tour is more impressive than the west, even though it rained for part of the day. The tour operators were OK. The West tour guide arranged the sequence very nicely and communicated well. However she totally ignored our highly anticipated and advertised stop in Riberia Grande. When I asked about the importance to us Andrea first replied "That is not on the agenda." When I showed her the Viator itinerary, she then apologized and said she would try to include it on the next (East Tour). This is the first time through Viator that a stop has been missed. When we had a different guide, he clearly missed her promise that would have been awkward anyway. We couldn't understand his name, bu…

Next, you’ll explore Lagoa das Furnas, a lake surrounded by volcanic activity and lush greenery. The nearby chapel and statues made of old tree trunks add local charm to the scenery.

The day then centers on Furnas, where the real culinary highlight awaits—Cozido das Caldeiras. Cooked underground with geothermal heat, this stew is a true local specialty, and many reviewers love the experience and flavor. Vegetarian options are also available, making it accessible for all diets.

Following the meal, a walk through Caldeira das Furnas offers a close-up view of bubbling hot springs, fumaroles, and boiling mud pools. This area is dotted with mineral springs and boasts some of the island’s most dramatic volcanic landscapes.

The tour continues at Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeiroes, a waterfall-filled park where you can appreciate the raw power of nature. Visitors often mention the tranquil waterfalls and traditional crafts, like the hand-made “corn leaf dolls,” as charming touches.

The guide can make or break this tour. The sites are amazing but the personal interaction with the guide is an integral part of the experience. Our first guide for the West Tour was excellent(Henry)and you could tell he was experienced. The 2nd day, East Tour was very interesting but was less experienced and did not interact as well with the group.
Michele R
Island is like a postcard. So many places to stop at. The tour was in 7 people so not to many. The stops were 20 or so minutes at each view point.
Tanya S
We had a great time. They covered a lot of places in 2 days! Very informative! Would definitely recommend

On the way back, a final stop at the Gorreana tea plantation allows for a relaxed tasting of the last all-natural tea in Europe. The plantations’ rolling hills and green hues make it a scenic end to your adventure.

Last but not least, a quick stop at Santa Iria Viewpoint treats you to a sweeping look at São Miguel’s rugged north coast, wrapping up the tour with views of cliffs, ocean, and distant shores.
