We had a wonderful trip to Struga and Ohrin, thanks to our fantastic driver and guide, Altin! He was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and ensured our comfort and safety throughout our journey! The return trek is not for the faint of heart, with navigating and traversing on such twisty, winding roads, but Altin was a true champion! Further, I appreciated the clear communication of pick-up point, and I he fact that he was there waiting for us, with a smile. We experienced beautiful weather and stunning views from the castle, and monastery. There is a significant amount of walking across uneven terrain, so please be mindful, and choose this trip accordingly based on your walking/fitness abil…

The tour of Lake Ohrid was one of the highlights of our trip. The lake area was stunning, with so much natural beauty and fascinating history. What made our tour extra-special was our guide, Ilir. We cannot say enough about his encyclopedic knowledge, infectious love of history, and all-around kindness. We took this tour at the end of our stay in Albania, and by that time we were starting to tire, but we are SO GLAD we went – we made memories that we will treasure always.

Our “small group” turned out to be a private tour!! Worth the drive. The lake, the fort, the old town, the bazaar, all top notch. St John’s is beautiful but sadly was closed due to the caretaker having some sort of emergency. Many many churches. Do not miss St. Sofia church and its frescos. Amazing driver/guide Marco. Enjoyed typical Macedonian food with him. Highly skilled driver and he even gave us good recommendations for dinner back in Tirana

Next, you’ll head to Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980. This ancient town is often described as one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, and its history is tangible everywhere—from narrow streets to historic buildings. You’ll get an hour here to explore, browse local shops, or just enjoy the views of Ohrid Lake.

Lake Ohrid and Surroundings

The next stop is at Ohrid Lake, famous for its crystal-clear waters and surrounding mountains. The Romans called it Lyhnidas (the Light Lake), and it’s easy to see why. The lake is dotted with quaint villages and offers stunning vistas, which you'll experience firsthand during the visit.

The city is known for its 365 Orthodox churches, a number that suggests a church for almost every day of the year, making it a fascinating place for history and architecture lovers.

Locals and travelers alike praise the beautiful views of the lake from various viewpoints. The narrow, winding streets and hillside houses reflect a unique architectural style that’s as charming as it is historically significant. As one review mentions, “The houses were built with a very specific architecture that created narrow streets, tunnels, and tiny yards on the hilly terrain.”

The Scenic Viewpoints

To cap the experience, the guide often takes you to scenic viewpoints overlooking Ohrid Lake, perfect for photos and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. It’s no surprise that many travelers mention the stunning scenery and the peaceful vibe that makes Ohrid special.

Returning to Tirana

The drive back is about 30 minutes, giving you some downtime after a busy day of sightseeing. The guides generally keep the group together, ensuring everyone gets picked up from the pre-arranged meeting point without fuss.
