If you’re considering taking a tour that combines stunning scenery with some local flavor, the Sights of Smoky Mountains, Real Local History experience might just be worth your attention. While we haven’t personally been on this tour, the detailed reviews and descriptions paint a pretty clear picture of what to expect.
It’s a balanced, well-rounded way to get a taste of the region, especially if you’re new to the area or want a guided day without the hassle of planning every stop yourself.
One of the things we love about this experience is its focus on the local stories and history. Guides with deep roots in the area share insights that you just can’t find in a travel guidebook.
Overall was a nice day , some great spots we stopped at. Lunch was very good. Justin are guide was very informative with the history of the Tennessee Smokies.
Experience and lunch was amazing! Our driver Mr Dustin had a lots of knowledge of the tour and help to explain and answer any questions that we might have had. If anyone would like to see and get a good experience of the Smoky Mountains this is the trip we would recommend. Amazing!!!
Great tour guide had lot of info about the area. Made accommodations for limited mobility. Saw a lot of the area.
The scenic drives along the Foothills Parkway and visits to iconic spots like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge provide plenty of photo opportunities and peaceful moments. Plus, the included lunch at a local eatery adds to the authentic feel of the trip.
However, there’s one thing to keep in mind: this is a bus tour, which means you’re not going to be wandering at your own pace or exploring off the beaten path. If you’re someone who loves to stop for long hikes or get up close and personal with every creek and mountain view, this might feel a little limited. That said, for those looking for a rundown of the region, it hits the right notes.
This tour is best suited for first-time visitors, history buffs, or anyone wanting a relaxing way to see a lot of the Smokies in one day. It’s also quite family-friendly, especially for those who prefer not to hike or drive long distances.
If you’re seeking a deeper, more adventurous experience, you might want to combine this with other activities. But for a smooth, informative ride with lovely scenery and stories, it offers great value.

Starting Point and Logistics
Meet at the Shops of Pigeon Forge by 9:00 am, and from there, the day kicks off with anticipation. The group size is kept fairly intimate with a maximum of 20 travelers, which helps keep things personal and engaging. The use of headsets ensures everyone can hear the guide clearly, an underrated feature that makes a noticeable difference compared to noisy buses or outdoor chatter.
The Route and Itinerary
The tour typically begins with a drive through Gatlinburg, the gateway city full of charm and character. Expect stories about the area’s origins, how Gatlinburg was founded, and its transformation over the years. This part is especially appealing if you’re into understanding how communities grow and evolve around tourism.
Next, you’ll head up the Foothills Parkway, renowned for its sweeping views over the valleys and mountains. The tour makes two photo stops along the parkway, so bring your camera! These spots are great for capturing memorable shots of the landscape and enjoying a peaceful break from the bus ride.
Exploring the National Park and Elkmont Ghost Town
The highlight is about three hours inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where you’ll visit popular areas like Newfound Gap, Metcalf Bottoms, and Elkmont. Some reviews mention the scenery as “lovely” and the opportunity to see waterfalls and streams that add to the visual appeal.
The views were lovely. Elvira’s was delicious. Our guide was well steeped in the history of the surrounding area. It was a little slow for an 11-year-old, but we got to see a lot of things we would not have known about otherwise.
This was a really nice tour and a good time, however it was not a full day and didn't include lunch as advertised.
The staff was excellent, friendly, informative and made you feel very relaxed! Would definitely use them again!
While some parts are just drive-by, others include brief stops that let you stretch your legs and take in the lush surroundings.
One of the unique features is a drive through Elkmont Ghost Town, which is described as a “hauntingly beautiful old vacation resort.” The guide provides historical context, although the actual stop here isn’t always guaranteed.
Lunch and Shopping in Townsend
Midday, the tour pauses in Townsend for about an hour. This is the opportunity for travelers to enjoy lunch at a local cafe—not included in the price, but most reviews say the food is worth it. The stop also allows some time for souvenir shopping at a shop stocked with local crafts.
Several reviews highlight the quality and local flavor, noting that the lunch break offers a nice breather and a chance to pick up unique gifts.
Very nice tour and lunch was very good I would recommend this tour for anyone no matter what age they will surely enjoy it our guide Dereck was wonderful
If you are ever in Pigeon Forge and have a free day, you won’t want to miss this tour. Our tour guide was wonderful, humorous and very informative with the history, the culture, the geography, politics and folklore as well. I really can’t say enough about the day trip with him. The van that we traveled in was excellent and lithe restaurant was a fun place that was not just a name brand, but a local eatery. He stopped often for photos and views of the magnificent Appalachian Mountains as well. A great tour and lots of fun for any age!
Dustin was a great tour guide, and brought Pam along for the ride, who we had toured with the day before to Cade's Cove. We were with another couple our friends, and once again were the only tourists on the van. It was a great day – not rushed seeing and learning about the town of Gatlinburg stopping for great sights, shopping and lunch and seeing the amazingly beautiful Smokies. Learning about the mountains, the establishment of the national park and the people of the area was a wonderful way to spend the day. A must!
Wrapping Up with Scenic Views
The final part of the tour includes two stops on Foothills Parkway, where you can snap some last scenic photos over the valley. These moments are appreciated for the panoramic vistas and the chance to reflect on the day.
The Ride and Comfort
The bus used appears to be well-maintained, especially after recent upgrades following some less favorable reviews. The driver/guide is often praised for their knowledge, storytelling skills, and friendliness, making the long day feel more personal. The use of headsets makes it easier to follow along, even in noisy environments.
The Value for Money
At $100 per person, this tour offers a lot of value—covering extensive ground, offering insights into local culture and history, and including scenic drives and stops. The reviews consistently mention how enjoyable and informative the experience is, with guides going above and beyond to make it memorable.
What Could Be Better?
While most reviews are positive, a few mention issues like delays or dissatisfaction with certain stops, such as the lunch or a missed opportunity to explore more on foot. One reviewer emphasized that the tour didn’t last as long as advertised and pointed out that certain stops were more about sight-seeing than in-depth exploration.
Absolutely great tour. Fascinating info about the Smokies and people of the Smokies. We want to come back for more tours. Thanks for the good lunch and great day.
A must take tour. Our tour guide was Dustin and he knows all this history of the area.
We really enjoyed our tour. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable about the history of the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. He was a local resident, a 7th generation member of his family from the area, and was able to pass on so much information. We saw a mama bear and her two cubs in the woods, in addition waterfalls, streams and beautiful scenery. We shopped at several local businesses, including a pottery store where we sat and watched an employee spinning vases. It was mesmerizing to watch, we could have sat there for hours. The tour was a lot of fun. We learned a lot and we would highly recommend it.
It’s also worth noting that, as a bus tour, it’s less suited for travelers who prefer strenuous hikes or off-the-beaten-path adventures. If you're after a relaxed overview with some storytelling, this fits the bill. But if you're looking to hike or explore every nook, you'll want to plan other activities.
