Our original 5 hour tour was scheduled for the prior day but was cancelled by high winds. Although, we ended up rebooking it the back office was unresponsive for several hours resulting considerable uncertainty on our part as to how to re-arrange our remaining plans. In the end it was all fixed to our satisfaction. Ana, our tour guide, was great and helped my wife with the descent when her ankle acted up. Experiencing the glacier up close made for a very memorable experience.

We had a super fun time with Troll on the 5 hour glacier hike on Skaftafell! Ana was an excellent guide and we had such a fun group (8 of us) that we really clicked with. Each group started together on the mountain and ended up going different routes, so it made it feel more private than being on a huge tour with other tourists. When you arrive to Troll it's a bit unclear what you're supposed to do- make sure you arrive early to get fitted with crampons and gear, and use the bathroom before you leave! It's a quick bus ride to the drop site, then a 20 minute walk or so from the car park up to the trailhead (feels way longer on the way back)! The pace was doable and despite never having hiked …

Amazing guides making the experience very enjoyable. It was raining and cloudy, which could have really dampened the experience – but it was completely unique and a lot of interesting views- like most things in the area this was very popular in the summer, so it did feel a bit like grand central station on the glacier, but once we got higher the crowds thinned, which I was grateful for.

This tour is especially good if you want to go beyond the typical quick glacier walk and really explore deeper into the ice. It’s suitable for those comfortable with a moderate hike and eager to see some of the most iconic ice features Iceland has to offer.

Arriving at the Glacier

The glacier here is Falljökull, a tongue from Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap. Walking onto the glacier, you’ll immediately notice the majestic ice structures—deep crevasses, pale moulins, and even ice sculptures.

As one reviewer, Greg_L, said, “We saw where the 4-hour tours went and got to go much further up on the glacier to the ice wall,” highlighting the tour’s advantage of more extensive exploration.

We went back and forth about the different tours and ended up taking the longer 5 hour tour. It was definitely the right choice. We saw where the 4 hour tours went to and we got to go much further up on the glacier to the ice wall. Our guide was terrific about teaching everyone how to use the equipment and about the glacier itself. It was an excellent trip overall.

We had a great time with Phillip as our guide. He was very knowledgeable and kept us all safe while showing us a great time. It was nice that they had multiple guides so it felt small. We had a larger group in our tour, but only 8 (including our family of 4) in Phillip’s group so it made it more intimate and easier to feel safe.

This tour was fantastic, 10/10 would do it again. It's incredible to be on the glacier and the views were amazing. We got to rappel down a crevasse and explore different areas of the glacier. We always felt safe and the pace was good. General FYI—the temperature on the glacier is about the same as on the ground, so dress accordingly before putting the gear on

Exploring the Ice

Once on the glacier, your guide will instruct you on how to walk safely with crampons. The glacier’s surface is constantly changing, with natural features that look like something straight out of a science fiction movie. Expect to see deep cracks, pale moulins (ice holes), and sculpted ice formations that are both incredible and delicate.

According to those who’ve done this tour, the experience of being on such a vast, ancient ice surface is memorable. One reviewer, Stephanie_P, described it as “fantastic,” adding that they even rappelled down a crevasse, which shows how varied your exploration can be.

Panoramic Views and Educational Content

Since you’ll be hiking at high elevations, views over Skaftafell National Park are spectacular. You’ll get panoramic vistas that are often used in movies and shows, which adds a cinematic feel to your day. Guides will talk about glacier formation, climate change, and the impacts of global warming, making this more than just a sightseeing trip—it’s an educational experience as well.

The Pace and Group Size

Most reviews mention the steady, comfortable pace—not overly rushed, with plenty of time for photos, questions, and breaks. Guides like Kate and Martin are praised for their patience and knowledge, making sure everyone feels safe, no matter their experience level. You’ll also appreciate that the groups are kept small, often with just 8-10 people, to enhance safety and intimacy.

This was an amazing experience. Augustine was our guide and he was perfect! He was patient and explained everything that we needed to do. I would suggest eating a good breakfast before you go, and pack some snacks and water. You have to have ankle covering hiking boots or you will have to use theirs. If you aren’t in good shape, you may struggle. It was moderate for us and we hike/work out regularly.
Kathryn K
This was wonderful and absolutely worth doing! Our guide Kate made it really adventurous, interesting, and fun, and we were all over the glacier. Ended up being the perfect amount of time to be out there. Highly recommend!
Keylerk G
Enjoyed every minute of it, worth the hike and using the equipment was definitely a learning curve but our guide Kate was very helpful and knowledgeable.

It was raining cats and dogs to the point where everyone's waterproof stuff wasn't waterproof at all anymore m, however great experience as it didn't really matter. The trip on the ice kept us all quite warm… initially I was wondering why I had not chosen the shorter tour but to be honest it was worthwhile as we could go higher up and have a better feeling of the glacier, see different structures etc. Our guide was great, interesting, helpful and funny at times. All in all well organised and well tailored for slightly sporty-er tourists with considerations for photos etc. The only reason why I've taken one star off was that I had to borrow boots because mine weren't high heel and the smell…
Elaine S
Trolls was well organized, provided all equipment necessary. Anna out guide was amazing — informative and passionate about the glaciers. A wonderful day exploring a magnificent glacier.
