Not worth the cost…close to $200 per person. Our guide seemed more interested in talking on his phone about his construction job, smoking and talking to people he knew. Talked more about his outside jobs and being deported than telling us interesting things about Tulum. Jose is not from Tulum and did not check equipment. When we returned to dive shop he parked on a side street and left us without saying a word and went to talk, smoke? with a couple of men. Although Hanna in the office was friendly and nice, I am not booking another tour with them, there are much better tour companies with professional guides for less money.

Jose Lopez was fantastic. The tour was amazing. The instructions and explanation of the ruins were exquisite. Jose took care to ensure everyone was safe. One of the travelers never swam before. He accommodated the entire group allowing the non-swimmer to go at her own pace while the more experienced swimmers went at a different pace. Very knowledgeable about Mexico. Perfectly done!

Amazing private tour with Julio. He gave us some history about the Mayan ruins by Tulum beach before snorkeling to the reef where we saw a sting ray, angel fish, starfish and bunch of other fish. Visibility wasn’t too great post a storm but we still got to see a lot of stuff. Then we went to an open cenote and saw a crocodile basking by the water. It was so cool seeing how the water temperature changes as well as various fish in the water. Dos Ojos was a treat! I don’t want to spoil it. It was just breathtaking. Julio was awesome. He made sure we were safe and checked in on us. And he’s really knowledgeable and his English is excellent. And then we had an awesome lunch nearby. Overall …

That said, it’s worth noting that the tour’s price point of $230 per person is definitely in the mid-range, but considering the inclusions and small group size, many find it to be a good value.

One thing to keep in mind: this tour doesn’t include hotel pickup or drop-off, so you’ll need to make your way to the meeting point. It’s best suited for travelers who love underwater adventures, enjoy small groups, and appreciate guided tours that prioritize safety and education. Overall, it appeals to those wanting a balanced mix of exploration, nature, and cultural insight.

Starting Point and Timing

The tour kicks off early at 8:45 am from Mirador TulumQROO 15, a convenient meeting spot near Tulum Beach. The early start means you’ll beat the crowds at some sites and enjoy the morning light streaming over the water — perfect for photography and soaking in the scenery.

Since the tour lasts approximately four hours, you’ll want to arrive prepared with your swimsuit, biodegradable sunscreen, and a sense of curiosity. As it’s a small group (up to six people), the guide can tailor the experience a little, which feels more intimate and flexible than larger tours.

The Itinerary: What You’ll See and Do

First stop: Tulum Bay and Reef

This was a unique and special experience. It included three cenotes due to rough waters in the sea. Snorkeling through the caves was the highlight, assuming you are ok with bats, dark places and tight quarters. If so you will experience an adventure unique from other cave exploration or snorkeling adventures. Our guide, Jose, was the best. Great personality and knowledgeable about the land and Mayan history. The day included lunch at a very local place with food you’d expect from your Mexican grandmother. Very simple, fresh and tasty.

This tour was the best we ever did and José was a great guide. We saw a turtle in the reefs, a tarantula in the jungle and even a few grey foxes. The cenotes were very different, the first one being entirely outside in middle of the mangrove while the second Sac Actun was only caves and tunnels. It was an extraordinary experience to swim, just the three of us, in those dark underground waters, surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites. It's a must do!

Snorkeling with turtles outside of the Tulum ruins was great and the Manati cenote was amazing! Erica was very knowledgeable about the region and did an excellent job as our guide. Highly recommend and a good value.

Your adventure begins with a boat ride along the coast, offering stunning views of the Tulum Ruins perched above the sea. The boat ride is a highlight in itself, as it’s a relaxed way to see the coastline from the water. The guide will point out notable features and give you a little background before jumping into the snorkeling part.

Once in the water, you’ll see the colorful marine life that makes Tulum’s reef so special. Reviewers mention seeing sea turtles, stingrays, starfish, and a wide variety of fish. The visibility may vary depending on recent weather, but many travelers have reported excellent encounters. The reef’s health and vibrancy really shine through, making it a worthwhile snorkeling spot.

Second stop: Casa Cenote

Next, the tour takes you to Casa Cenote, a famous site in Tulum known for its crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings. The cenote is a perfect blend of freshwater and saltwater, creating a unique ecosystem. Here, you might spot rock formations, stalagmites, and stalactites, which add to the cave-like atmosphere.

Travelers like Nicole G. appreciated the knowledgeable guide Erica, who shared insights about the area. The cenote’s calm waters make it ideal for taking your time, whether you're snorkeling or just floating and soaking in the scenery. Using a lifejacket during this part ensures safety, especially for less experienced swimmers.

Third stop: Cenotes Saac Actum

The final part of the tour takes you into an underground network of cenotes, offering an entirely different experience. These caves are dark and often feature bats, bats’ noise, and tight spaces, which might not appeal to everyone but add a sense of adventure. If you’re comfortable in caves, this is a fascinating glimpse into how these sinkholes form and their natural beauty.

Reviews describe this as “a highlight,” with travelers noting the rock formations and the thrill of exploring underground caves. It’s a fantastic way to see a different side of Mexico’s natural landscape, and the small group size allows the guide to focus on safety and individual comfort.

What’s Included and What’s Not

The tour includes all necessary snorkeling equipment, snacks, and a professional guide with local knowledge. You’ll also pay the Reef Tax (Environmental Management Charge), which supports conservation efforts.

Post-snorkeling, participants enjoy a lunch included in the price, with options accommodating vegetarians. Many reviews highlight the quality of the snacks and the relaxed, friendly vibe. It’s a thoughtful touch that adds to the overall value.

However, the tour does not cover hotel pickup or drop-off, so you’ll need to get yourself to the meeting point. This isn’t a big deal if you're already nearby, but it’s something to plan for, especially in Tulum where transportation can be tricky.

The Experience: What Travelers Are Saying

The reviews paint a pretty clear picture: this tour is highly praised for its knowledgeable guides and the variety of ecosystems visited. For example, one reviewer raved about Jose Lopez, who “took care to ensure everyone was safe,” accommodating even a non-swimmer and sharing insightful information about the region.

Many travelers mention how small groups make the experience more personal and engaging. One review states, “It’s a great tour in a small group; you learn more and really get a full experience.” The inclusion of snacks and lunch is also appreciated, as it keeps everyone energized and relaxed.

That said, not all reviews are glowing. One critic felt the guide seemed distracted, mentioning, “Our guide seemed more interested in talking on his phone,” which is a reminder that small group dynamics can vary. But overall, the feedback leans heavily positive.

Pricing and Value

At $230 per person, this tour isn’t the cheapest option on the market. However, considering that it covers three ecosystems, includes snorkeling gear, snacks, and lunch, and offers a small-group feel, many see it as good value.

The price reflects the personalized attention, safety, and varied experiences packed into four hours. If you’re after diverse ecosystems and a guided experience that balances education with fun, it’s a worthwhile spend.

This adventure is particularly suitable for nature lovers and curious travelers who want a comprehensive look at Tulum’s aquatic environments.
