Solheimajokull Glacier 3-Hour Small-Group Hike

Sólheimajökull 3-hour small-group glacier hike from Vík. Crampons, helmet, ice axe included, safety-first guides, English-led.

5.0(501 reviews)From $125.77 per person

This 3-hour Sólheimajökull glacier hike is a practical, safety-focused way to step onto Iceland’s “blue ice” and learn what you’re looking at, with an experienced certified glacier guide. You get a small group (up to 12), and you’ll love how the guide-led pace helps everyone stay together—especially during the gear-up moment on the glacier.

Two things I really like: the equipment is included (crampons, helmet, harness, ice axe), and the tour spends real time on glacier formation and how it’s changing. One consideration: you’re on a glacier for only a few hours total, so if your heart is set on extra time on the ice, you may want a longer glacier option.

This is a great fit for travelers who want a bucket-list experience with structure—families with kids 8+, active couples, and seniors who can handle moderate walking.

Anna was an excellent guide. She was patient and kind, and I felt safe while having an amazing time!!

The hike was led by experienced guides who have been doing this for many years. They were supportive in donning and doffing the equipment. Skill level easy to me and I’m an active senior. A must do when the weather is good 👍

Where you go: Sólheimajökull Glacier (Vík’s iconic ice)

Solheimajokull Glacier 3-Hour Small-Group Hike - Where you go: Sólheimajökull Glacier (Vík’s iconic ice)

You meet at the Tröll Expeditions Solheimajökull address in Vík, then head out for a brisk approach before you reach the glacier. The “arrive on the ice” moment is the payoff: you’ll stand on a compacted glacier surface where the color and texture feel unreal—quiet, isolated, and very far from everyday ground.

The itinerary is simple—there’s one main stop—and that focus helps you actually absorb what the guide is showing you. It’s not about rushing through checkboxes; it’s about getting oriented and then exploring.

Gear-up time: crampons, helmet, harness, ice axe

The best part of this tour is that the difficult-sounding parts are made manageable. Guides provide the key glacier equipment and take you through how it all goes on, so you don’t have to figure things out with cold hands.

Amazing trek across and around the glacier! So glad we included this experience in our Iceland trip!!

It was organized. the guides were helpful. It was a bit strenuous but doable if you’re in shape. Interesting

This was the highlight of my trip to Iceland. When can you say you hiked a glacier? My partner and I went to iceland in October when there was record snowfall- 18inches! We still managed to make the trek from Reykyavik to the meet up location (about 2.5 hour drive) and it was well worth it. The weather on the glacier itself was perfect, hardly windy and SUNNY. It look a little bit to get the trek started with donning the safety equipment, but once we got going, wit was amazing. Edgar and Natalia were amazing hosts- very patient with some of our less attentive compatriots but also very informative. And a pleasure to be around and talk with. I just hope they'll adopt a QR code / venmo for digi…
  • Crampons for traction
  • A helmet for head protection
  • A harness and ice axe as part of safe glacier travel
  • Guidance on safe walking technique

Keep in mind the hiking-boots detail: good hiking shoes are necessary, but rental options exist if you need them. A few travelers also recommend ankle-support shoes, because crampons shift how your feet feel on ice.

How hard is the hike, really?

Solheimajokull Glacier 3-Hour Small-Group Hike - How hard is the hike, really?

Most people describe the hike as moderate, with a bit of strenuous effort depending on your comfort level on uneven ice. You’ll be walking on glacier terrain (not flat pavement), and even with crampons, the footing takes adjustment.

A helpful clue from travelers: the tour includes the time for setup and transitioning onto the ice, so the “3 hours” isn’t just straight hiking time. If you’re reasonably fit and used to walking outdoors, you’ll likely find it doable—with stops for breath, photos, and regrouping.

One small reality check: even when the “easy” level is offered, the glacier environment still demands calm attention. If you’re nervous about stability, it’s still a good choice—guides consistently emphasize safety and patient instruction during equipment fitting.

Amazing once in a lifetime experience. The glacier was beautiful and are guide Edgar made sure we were safe and had a great experience. I would highly recommend and I would do it again when I return to Iceland.

This company was awesome and would definitely do another tour with them. Our guide, Edger was amazing. I would ask for him. He made the hike fun and was very knowable about the glacier.

Solheimajokull 3 hour glacier hike. This was an amazing hike. Our guide Eli was fantastic and made the trip safe and exciting. We hiked pretty far up on the glacier and saw how they measure the change in size of the glacier over the season. It was a bit harder to walk on the glacier than I thought even with the cramp-ons provided, but I would 100% recommend everyone take this tour.

Weather expectations (and why they matter on a glacier)

Solheimajokull Glacier 3-Hour Small-Group Hike - Weather expectations (and why they matter on a glacier)

This hike runs in all weather conditions, as long as the day’s conditions allow safe travel. The flip side: the experience is weather-dependent, and if it can’t operate due to poor conditions, you’ll be offered another date or a full refund.

On clear days, the scenery really pops. Travelers often mention good visibility and even sunny conditions, which is when the glacier feels especially dramatic.

Practical tip: dress for cold first, then comfort. You’ll be outside for setup and walking, and you’ll want layers you can move in (more than one person stresses warm clothes and comfort for longer time on the ice).

The glacier story you’ll actually remember

Solheimajokull Glacier 3-Hour Small-Group Hike - The glacier story you’ll actually remember

Once you’re on the glacier, the guide helps you connect what you’re seeing to the bigger “how glaciers work” picture. You’ll learn about glacier formation and how it’s changing over time, with explanations that make the landscape feel alive rather than just scenic.

Our guide, Lilly was AMAZING! She was energetic, fun and caring. She made the whole experience that much more enjoyable. She was great with the adults (my wife and I) as well as our children (8&11). In fact I think my 8 year old is now wanting to be an ice-climber. As far as the experience itself, it is a must do in Iceland. If you don't have it on your itinerary, don't leave Iceland without experiencing it!

This glacier hike was an amazing adventure. Our guide was great; he was engaging, informative, and made sure that everyone on the hike was having a good time.

Unique 3 hour hike of a glacier. Medium difficulty. Knowledgeable tour guides. Quality gear. As advertised. Would highly recommend.

A favorite theme from travelers: guides are engaging and informative, and they bring the glacier to life with geology tidbits, humor, and clear safety reminders. You’ll hear names like Anna, Edgar, Eli, Lilly, Wojtec, Kamilla, Maria, Filip, Adam, Nate, Malek, and Matthew (Bacha) pop up in experiences—each described as knowledgeable and focused on keeping the group safe and having a great time.

Views worth the effort: Eyjafjallajökull on a clear day

Solheimajokull Glacier 3-Hour Small-Group Hike - Views worth the effort: Eyjafjallajökull on a clear day

If conditions are right, you can admire Eyjafjallajökull in the distance—especially meaningful since its 2010 eruption famously impacted European air traffic. Even when you don’t get the perfect view, the glacier itself delivers: the blue tones, the stark texture, and the eerie quiet are what you came for.

Photos vs. reality: what to expect from the “ice cave” images

Solheimajokull Glacier 3-Hour Small-Group Hike - Photos vs. reality: what to expect from the “ice cave” images

One thing to be aware of: some marketing photos may suggest ice-cave imagery, but not every hike includes an ice-cave walk. A traveler noted that the advertised ice-cave picture didn’t match what their group encountered.

So if your main goal is an ice-cave scene, consider confirming with the operator before booking. For this specific experience, plan on a guided glacier walk and education—rather than an ice-cave expedition.

Tom was awesome! Very patient and informative!! Beautiful hike and great experience overall for our family.

We had an amazing time. Maria our tour guide was so informative and helpful. My 12 year old was able to do everything! Saw so much, great pictures, and memories of a lifetime. Highly recommend!

Had a fantastic hike with Edgar! He was so kind and shared his deep knowledge with us about the glacier with his great humor and our whole group ended the hike with chocolate in hand and high spirits! 10/10 would recommend to anyone. Hike difficulty was moderate for someone who doesn’t hike much, but was definitely worth it. Edgar was sure to keep our group together and kept us at a comfortable pace for everyone. Be sure to bring warm clothes and comfortable hiking shoes with ankle support (or rent them at the tour).

Logistics: meeting time, where to start, and what costs extra

Plan to arrive 15 minutes before departure at the meeting point in Vík. The tour ends back at the same place, so you’re not dealing with complicated drop-off logistics.

What’s included:

  • Certified glacier guide
  • Glacier gear: crampons, helmet, harness, ice axe
  • Small group up to 12
  • English-led experience
  • Mobile ticket

What’s not included (but available for rental/purchase):

  • Hiking boots rental (1,750 ISK)
  • Waterproof jacket rental (1,750 ISK)
  • Waterproof pants rental (1,750 ISK)
  • Hat and gloves combo with logo (3,000 ISK)
  • Neck warmer with logo (500 ISK)
  • Summer cap with logo (1,500 ISK)
  • Food and drinks
  • Hotel pickup/drop-off from Reykjavík or other areas

One extra “heads up” from a traveler: parking at the meeting area may involve a fee, and signage wasn’t obvious to them. When you arrive, take a quick look around for parking instructions and be ready with a plan.

Should you book this Sólheimajökull hike?

Yes—if you want a guided glacier experience that feels safe, structured, and educational. It’s a strong value for the gear, the certified instruction, and the chance to walk on the glacier tongue with time for explanations and photos.

I’d skip (or switch to a longer glacier option) if you’re chasing maximum time on the ice or you specifically want an ice-cave-style itinerary. And if you’re not confident on uneven terrain, pack extra time for setup and bring the warmest layers you can manage—comfort helps you enjoy the walk.

Given its high rating and strong “highlight of the trip” feedback, it’s the kind of tour that earns its place on a southern Iceland itinerary—especially when the weather cooperates.
