If you’re dreaming of catching your first wave in Hawaii, then this beginner surf lesson in Waikiki might be just what you’re looking for. While I haven’t personally tried this specific tour, I’ve done my homework and sifted through plenty of reviews to give you an honest, detailed look at what you can expect from this experience.

From the personal touch of local instructors to the iconic setting of Waikiki Beach, it’s clear this is a solid choice for folks new to surfing.

What really caught our attention are the instructors’ expertise and the focus on safety. You’re in the hands of native Hawaiian watermen who know their stuff and genuinely want you to succeed. Plus, the promise to help you stand up on your first wave is pretty enticing — it’s a goal most of us have when trying surfing for the first time.

Good communication and were very friendly throughout. Took my 12 and 15 year olds out and they were up on the board in no time. While it wasn't a great day for waves, they loved it.

I was able to book this a day before the event, though the day the event I was contacted to move my booked slot because they booked two people at the same time. I had the flexibility to delay the booking. At arrival I waited for my instructor Jameson who gave me a very quick intro to surfing and mentioned he was asked to cover this shift for this contractor as a favor. I was told by the contractor I was going to get a place to leave my stuff but it turned out there wasn’t, but the instructor asked some friends of his to look over my stuff (which was only left on top of a container box). The lesson went great, had the opportunity to practice several times on the water with some small waves….

My entire family learned to surf in under 30mins. Very safe and professional guide. He was on time and reached out before hand. We didn’t waste any time with waivers and after 10mins of orientation & instruction we were paddling out to catch our 1st wave. Everyone had fun and learned to surf very quickly – Great family fun!

On the flip side, a potential snag is the limited duration — just about 2 hours — which means your window to learn and catch a wave is tight, especially if you’re a total beginner.

This tour is best suited for travelers who value personalized instruction and a cultural connection to Hawaii. If you’re after a laid-back, authentic introduction to surfing, and don’t mind being in a small group or a private setting, this could be a perfect fit.

Preston was amazing! It was my first time ever surfing, and he did a great job explaining the steps and giving feedback after each attempt. By the end of our hour together, I was able to stand up and ride 4 waves! Wish our trip was longer, I would have rebooked again.

Preston is an excellent instructor. I had a one-on-one session with him, and he clearly explained how everything works, from the board basics to how the waves break at that spot on the beach. His guidance was straightforward and confidence-boosting, and he had me standing on my board on only my second attempt. Highly recommend him for anyone starting out.
Martha H
Great instructor! Had a lot of fun, would recommend to anyone looking to learn how to surf or trying to improve.

How This Tour Stands Out

Surf lessons for beginners in Waikiki - How This Tour Stands Out

Several reviews highlight what makes this tour special: the local Hawaiian instructors’ knowledge and genuine passion for sharing their culture. They’re not just teaching you how to surf—they’re sharing stories and insights that deepen your connection to the place. One reviewer even remarked, “Preston responds very quickly and accommodates changes,” which underscores the flexible, attentive service.

Downsides and Considerations

The main thing to keep in mind is timing — with only about two hours, you’ll want to be ready to make the most of your lesson. If you’re expecting a long, full-day surfing adventure, this might seem brief. Also, the reviews reveal that there was at least one instance where a guide did not show up, so I’d recommend confirming your booking and being flexible with your schedule.

Lastly, the price point is reasonable, considering the private nature of the lessons and the included gear, but it’s not a bargain-basement deal. For the quality and local expertise you’re getting, it’s fair value, especially if you’re eager to learn from native Hawaiian surfers.
