If you’re looking for a way to see Sydney from a different angle, this kayak tour might just be what you need. It promises an active morning exploring the iconic Sydney Harbour with the added thrill of paddling close to the city’s landmarks and landing on a nearly inaccessible island. While I haven’t done this trip myself, the glowing reviews suggest it’s a genuinely memorable experience.

Two standout features catch my eye. First, the expert guidance combined with the use of top-quality kayaks makes this not just a sightseeing trip but a skill-building adventure. Second, the stunning views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House from the water are tough to beat—picturing yourself framed by these landmarks from your kayak sounds pretty special.

That said, it’s worth noting this tour is best suited for those comfortable in the water and with a reasonable to high level of fitness. It may not be ideal for travelers with certain medical conditions, mobility issues, or who aren’t confident swimmers. Still, for active travelers who love outdoor activities and want a closer look at Sydney’s natural and built wonders, this kayak trip offers a compelling mix.

Matt was a great guide who was super friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed the morning with him and the group. Matt was full of local knowledge and facts and we thought the photos of us with the harbour bridge in the backgroind, which we got emailed at the end, were awesome!

The tour is designed for those who are comfortable in water — no previous kayaking experience is necessary, but you should be confident in your ability to paddle and stay afloat.

Once on the water, you’ll paddle into the heart of Sydney Harbour, enjoying views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge that are often absent from land-based tours. The soundscape, with gentle paddling and seagulls, makes it a calming escape from the city’s hustle. As you make your way toward the bridge, your guide will help you capture photos with Sydney’s most famous structures as a backdrop—these come with high praise, with many reviewers sharing how their photos turned out “awesome” or “fantastic.”

The highlight for many is landing on Goat Island, known locally as Memel—one of the few islands in the harbor that’s closed to the public. Your tour includes a landing permit, making this a rare opportunity to step ashore. You’ll explore on foot, gaining insights into the island’s natural features and history, as shared by your guide. Since it’s only accessible through this tour, it’s a unique chance to see a quiet, unspoiled part of Sydney Harbour.

After exploring Goat Island, you’ll paddle back through Darling Harbour, passing by some of the city’s most vibrant waterfront areas. Many reviews mention how good it feels to be on the water, away from crowds, with the sound of your paddle in the water and the calls of sea birds as your soundtrack.

Once ashore, you can rinse off in nearby showers (if available) and, if you’re hungry, head to the renowned Sydney Fish Markets nearby for a hearty lunch. The tour’s timing at 8 AM makes it perfect for a morning activity, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your day.

This kayak tour with Matt was excellent. He was a great and knowledgeable guide and we are so glad we did this trip.

I had a great time kayaking with Daniel. He had a ton of helpful tips when kayaking like: don’t push against rocks (damages the paddle) and when the water gets choppy, that’s when you need to paddle extra hard instead of less. Also, if you use your abs to rotate the paddle in the water, you can get a great ab workout, and save energy on your arms/shoulders. Additionally, he had so much historical information to share about Sydney's harbor, and Goat Island, which we stopped at right around the half way point. He also took and sent us for free some great photos with the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbor Bridge in the background which I was so happy to have! Definitely would recommend to…
