If you’re planning a trip to Mexico City and looking for a memorable experience, a hot air balloon ride over Teotihuacan is worth considering. We haven’t gone ourselves, but based on countless reviews and detailed descriptions, it’s clear this is one of those bucket-list adventures that blends stunning scenery, a touch of adrenaline, and a dash of history.
What makes this tour appealing? First, the spectacular views from a hot air balloon—especially at sunrise—are said to be unlike anything you’ve seen before. Second, the professionalism and safety measures of Volare, the tour provider with over 15 years of experience, seem to put travelers at ease.
On the flip side, one potential consideration is that the flight is weather-dependent—if the winds aren’t cooperating, your plans might be delayed or canceled. Still, for those who appreciate a well-organized experience and are eager to see Mexico’s archaeological marvels from above, this tour hits the mark.
Absolutely Amazing! Must Do! Feb 11/2026 & temps 10-15*C Absolutely Amazing Experience! (Hot Air balloon & Breakfast-No pyramid tour) Day started with a 5-530am pick up. If your accomodations are in the tourist areas (Roma/condesa ext areas) our hotel did not show up on their list, but we talked to Volare and they said it was good. Driver was great! About an hour or so drive to site, once there you check in, grab some coffee, light snack options (apples, pineapple Cookie tarts) Once checked in you can stand outside and watch them set up (from afar) there's heat lamps outside too and a little vender selling poncho sweaters and mittens incase you didn't dress warm enough. As Canadians we wo…

The Departure & Timing
Most participants are picked up early—around 4:50 to 6:00 am—so you’ll need to be prepared for an early start. That might seem daunting, but it’s the best time for flying because of the wind conditions at sunrise. The tour’s total duration varies from 3 to 9 hours, mostly depending on transportation options, weather, and if you opt for additional time at the archaeological site.
An amazing experience. The team was so efficient and friendly from pick up and drop off. The views were amazing. So glad I did it.
Pick up from the hotel was a struggle in the morning. Instead of picking me up from my pre-confirmed hotel, they asked me to go to another hotel nearby. Cental hotel area is not safe at 5 am. So be carefull with the pick up option if you are travelling solo.
It was the most breathtaking experience! The sunset and the views right over top of the pyramids were unreal. Definitely worth it if you’re on the fence. No regrets. We had ample amount of time in the hot air balloon and the most lovely breakfast. Dress warm!! It was +5 C in the morning (mid November).
The Pickup & Transportation
If you choose the round-trip transportation option, you’ll be picked up from your hotel in Mexico City in an air-conditioned vehicle. Many reviews emphasize how smooth and straightforward this part of the experience is, giving you one less thing to worry about. Just remember, pick-up times are early and vary slightly based on your location.
The Flight Itself
The flight lasts between 30 to 50 minutes, although weather conditions can influence the duration. You’ll be in a shared balloon with up to 16 passengers, which many find adds to the camaraderie and shared awe.
Travelers often mention how the pilot, Julio, or other crew members, are not just skilled but also engaging—offering interesting insights into what you’re seeing and sometimes even playing music. Many reviews describe the flight as surprisingly gentle and peaceful, with no turbulence or swaying, which is perfect if heights aren’t your thing.
The Views & What You’ll See
Once in the air, you’ll glide over the Teotihuacan Valley, with panoramic views of the pyramids and surrounding towns. If weather permits, you’ll get to see the pyramids during the flight, including the Sun and Moon pyramids, along with the archaeological site below.
We loved the hot air balloon experience!!! Pick up was as planned, we received a text the day before. Ride was one hour to the site. It was very well organized! The ride was amazing!! Amazing! Then we had a nice breakfast! We took the option to go back after bf as we were tired enough. Very good cie!
Amazing experience, would definitely do it again and highly recommended. The views, food, treatments fron all the staff were exceptional
This experience is truly amazing. The view was incredible. The staff as really great and make sure you have a great experience. I would recommend this to anyone traveling.
Several reviews highlight how breathtaking the views are at sunrise, with some describing the experience as “magical” or “breathtaking.”
You’ll also pass over the charming towns of San Martin de las Piramides, San Juan Teotihuacan, and the Teotihuacan Municipality. These glimpses of local life add depth to the experience, making it more than just sightseeing.
Landing & Post-Flight
The ground crew will facilitate your safe landing—although, as one reviewer noted, sometimes the landing can drift over the city for a bit if wind conditions are tricky. Once landed, a traditional Mexican toast and a diploma are part of the celebration, enhancing that sense of achievement.
Exploring the Pyramids and Archaeological Site
While the aerial views are the main draw, many travelers choose to extend their visit by exploring the site afterward, though entrance fees are not included. If you decide to visit the archaeological complex, it’s about an hour’s walk or a short drive from the launch site, and the entrance fee is around 85 MXN per person.
Hot air-ballooning over these pyramids at sunrise is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The hot air balloons don't have doors, so there is some climbing and jumping into the basket involved. It would have also been nice if there were 2 fewer people in each basket, since it felt like we were packed in like sardines in a can. The loss of one star is for the quality of the breakfast buffet, and the long wait once we arrived at the location until we actually got sorted into groups and went off to get on the balloons. The transportation to and from CDMX was timely and comfortable, but some improvements to the process and food options would make this a 5-star experience.

The hot air balloon portion of the tour was amazing and I would highly recommend it. However, we opted for seeing the pyramids without a guide and we had transportation back to our hotel. They gave us three hours to see the pyramids which could easily have been accomplished in an hour. (This was done to accommodate the people doing a private tour. ) There was no place to sit or get out of the sun and was pretty much a miserable experience after the balloon ride. Either do the private tour which doubles the price or opt to leave right after the balloon ride.
Keep in mind, if you want a guided tour within the ruins, that’s an extra cost, and the tour provider’s focus is primarily on the balloon experience.
Food & Extras
Immediately after the flight, you’ll be treated to a Mexican buffet breakfast at the balloon port, which many reviews mention as a definite highlight. The breakfast includes fruits, cookies, coffee, and tea—simple, but authentic and satisfying. Some reviews mention the breakfast as a relaxing, delicious way to wrap up the adventure.
Cost & Value
At approximately $146 per person, many agree the experience is good value, given the stunning views, safety, and extras included. When you consider the uniqueness of the sunrise flight, the professional service, and the opportunity to see one of Mexico’s most iconic sites from a new angle, it often feels like worth every peso.

It's really cool. Not for those afraid of heights, though. Pleasant ride – until we landed – into a tree!!
Absolutely amazing experience! The staff provided top-notch hospitality from start to finish. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting.
This was a bucket list item that I can mark off. It was spectacular, the entire team of Volare from the check in to dropping us back off was great. There are so many of them that are working for an unbelievable journey, when we landed we didn't even feel a bump, it was so smooth. The pick up at the hotel was prompt, the drop off however took twice as long as the driver drove to the airport first (to drop two passengers) before dropping the majority of folks in town. An hour journey turned into two hours!!! Another item, that was probably my fault, I thought the breakfast was in the caves, it was not, it was at the facility for Volare outside in a cute courtyard. They had a mariachi ban…
While not specifically designed for children under five, older kids might enjoy the ride if they’re comfortable with heights and the early start. Conversely, those prone to motion sickness or worried about the unpredictability of weather should be aware of the possibility of delays or cancellations.
