Awesome tour. Daniel Santillan Lara (the guide) was the best! He got us to all the places safely and was very knowledgeable in answering all our many many questions. He was very personable and spoke excellent english. He never rushed us so we all felt like we had the right amount of time at each stop. Highly recommend him.

This tour was great, the sights were amazing and Tequila was fun to visit. Daniel is hands down one of the best tour guides i have ever met, fantastic guy, great communicator and very knowledgeable. He even suggested great restaurants to visit in the city.

Daniel was an exceptional tour guide…knowledgeable and informative about every aspect of the tour. Great disposition and good driver! Rosemarie and Jon Redmond, Wa

What really draws us in are a couple of standout features: first, the tour’s focus on small, intimate groups makes for a more personal experience, and second, the expert guides who bring the history and process of tequila to life. One potential consideration is the long drive—about an hour and twenty minutes each way—which might be tiring if you’re not a fan of bus journeys.

This tour suits travelers who enjoy a full, engaging day and are comfortable with moderate physical activity and a bit of a ride.

Whether you’re a history buff, a tequila enthusiast, or someone simply eager to see more of Jalisco’s scenic landscapes, this tour offers a little bit of everything. It’s especially appealing if you appreciate guided experiences that combine education with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Starting Point and Transportation

The adventure begins with a pick-up in Guadalajara, and from there, it’s a comfortable ride in a recent model vehicle that’s air-conditioned—a small detail, but one that makes a difference on hot days. With a maximum of 15 travelers, the group size promises a friendly, less rushed atmosphere. We loved the way the guide, Guadalupe or Daniel, kept the trip smooth and engaging, handling the logistics so you can focus on soaking in the sights and stories.

First Stop: Guachimontones Archaeological Site

The highlight for many is the visit to the Guachimontones archaeological site, often called Teuchitlán. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features circular pyramids, a rare sight that sets it apart from other Mesoamerican ruins. The site is considered the most significant in western Mexico, and the scale and shape of the pyramids are intriguing—squares and circles blending in a way that sparks curiosity.

Based on reviews, visitors find the site unexpectedly expansive. As one reviewer noted, “The archaeological site is bigger and more impressive than we imagined,” which makes the three hours here feel well worth it. The interpretive center adds context, helping you understand the purpose of these unique pyramids, which are thought to be connected to ceremonial or astronomical functions.

Our tour with Daniel was a highlight of our Guadalajara trip: we learned, we laughed, we ate and drank while touring the beautiful countryside and small towns of the Tequila region. Daniel went above and beyond to provide a unique experience for us, stopping along the way to introduce us to pre-columbian beverages and taking us directly into an agave farm to meet a jimador and try our hand at agave pina harvesting. The tour was intimate with only one other couple along. Highly recommend!

This was a great tour! Lots of learning new stuff. The pyramid part was chocked full of information that I never knew before. The museum was very nice. After that we went up to the site which is a steep hike up a cobblestone road for maybe a half of a kilometer. If you are not a strong walker, you may want to pass on this part – everyone in our group was sweating in December, after this walk to the pyramid. Next we went to the Tres Mujeres Tequila factory, this wasn't my first time at a tequila factory, but this was definitely a better experience! Due to the traffic issues in Guadalajara, this is a long tour, you will leave at 10am and won't get back before 8pm. Our tour guide Guadalupe (Lu…

Great experience which focuses on history and local life. Absolutely amazing. We also did things that were not listed on the itinerary thanks to Daniel our tour guide who had great knowledge about everything.

Mid-Morning Break in Teuchitlán

Next, a quick 20-minute stop in the main square of Teuchitlán offers a chance to stretch, snap photos, and grab some snacks. It’s a relaxed moment before heading into the heart of tequila country. Reviewers agree that this brief pause helps break up the day naturally and adds a bit of local flavor.

The Tequila Production Experience

After about 40 minutes’ drive, you arrive at Tequila Tres Mujeres—a distillery that welcomes visitors to see the tequila-making process firsthand. Here, you get to taste different categories of tequila, which is always fun for those curious about the nuances between, say, blanco, reposado, and añejo. The guide’s insights into how tequila is crafted and how to recognize quality will upgrade your tasting game.

Many reviews rave about this part, with one saying, “Not only do we learn how to drink tequila properly, but also how to recognize the different flavors.” The tasting session lasts around two hours, giving you ample opportunity to ask questions and appreciate the craftsmanship behind each sip.

Free Time in Tequila Town

The afternoon is dedicated to exploring Tequila town itself, a picturesque place filled with shops, cafes, and historical sites. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely meal, perhaps sampling local gastronomy, before entering the José Cuervo distillery. This part is more about the industry’s history and branding, but it also offers a chance for photos, shopping, and soaking up the town’s vibe.

The distillery visit lasts around three hours, including free time for browsing or grabbing a snack. Many reviewers mention that Guadalupe or Daniel make the experience engaging and friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere to get to know the town beyond the typical tourist spots.
