If you’re planning a trip to Crete and love discovering local food and drink, a wine tour like this one in Heraklion could be a real highlight. We haven’t done it ourselves, but with a perfect 5-star rating from dozens of travelers, it’s clearly a popular choice.
It promises an immersive day of wine tasting, scenic vineyard visits, and authentic Cretan cuisine—all within a compact, well-organized package.
What really draws us in are two key aspects. First, the small-group setting means you’ll likely get a more personalized experience, which is often the best way to enjoy wine tasting and local storytelling. Second, the all-inclusive nature—from tastings and a three-course lunch to transportation—means you can relax and focus on soaking in the flavors and scenery without scrambling for extra cash.
Peter was super knowledgable and he took us to some really nice wineries and superb restaurant. He's tour is a must for wine lovers while visiting Crete.
If you like wine then this is the trip for you.An excellent guide with plenty of knowledge not just about wine but about Crete too.The 2 wineries we visited were very welcoming and friendly with plenty of snacks to enjoy with the wine.
Great experience with knowledgable guide. You get to see 2 amazing wineries with a great lunch afterwards. 100% worth the price.
One thing to keep in mind is the price point—around $192 per person. While that might seem steep, considering the multiple tastings, gourmet lunch, transportation, and guided expertise, many reviews suggest it offers great value. Still, if you’re on a tight budget or prefer independent exploration, this might not be your best fit.
This tour is well-suited for foodies and wine lovers who want a curated experience rather than just wandering on their own. It’s also ideal for those interested in learning about Cretan wine-making techniques and tasting a variety of wines that are hard to find without local help.

Visiting the Vineyards in Archanes
Your first stop takes you into the wine-growing region of Archanes, a place celebrated for its long-standing winemaking traditions. The visit to Digenakis Winery is a highlight. You’ll explore a boutique winery, meet the winemakers, and get an insider look at their facilities. This is no big industrial operation; it’s a family-style winery that values craftsmanship.
The guided tour here lasts about two hours and includes tasting five different wines paired with local products, like ham and cheese.
We had an excellent day with Graff Pierre!! Extremely knowledgeable of wine and its production! Got into outlying regions of Heraklion! Highly recommend! Worth every penny!!😃
Petras was very good company for the day and extremely knowledgeable. We learned so much from him about Crete's history as well as the wine. Each of the wine makers were very accommodating and fed us well. And I cannot emphasise enough how good all of the food was! Picked fresh from the garden. The lunch at the end was just spectacular. We were so full when we returned to our hotel that we slept for 2 hours but we were very very happy. A fantastic way to spend the day and such good value for what you get out of it. Can't recommend enough!
A really well planned out and enjoyable day in the wine region of Heraklion. We visited 2 wineries, touring the winery and sampling many many wines (with snacks of cheese, salads and breads to soak it up!). We then headed to the village of Archanes, to taste olive oil and enjoy a delicious 4 course meal accompanied by another 5 wines! We would highly recommend this tour, but don’t expect to stay sober!
Several reviewers describe this as a personal and heartfelt experience, with Maureen_S calling it “absolutely unforgettable.”
Following that, you'll head to Lyrarakis Winery, a name that carries some weight in Crete’s wine scene. Here, you’ll have another guided tasting of five wines. Reviewers like Craig_M mention that the diversity of wines and the guide made this part of the tour especially enjoyable.
It’s a great chance to compare different winemaking approaches—larger established wineries vs. smaller boutique operations—and really appreciate the variety Crete has to offer.
Cultural and Culinary Highlights in Archanes
Midday is dedicated to tasting local flavors at a traditional restaurant in Archanes. This isn’t just a quick stop; it’s a full-on culinary experience. You’ll sample a mixture of olive oils, honey, jams, and other regional products. Then, settle into a three-course meal of typical Cretan mezze dishes, paired thoughtfully with five glasses of wine.
The reviews consistently mention the delicious food and great wine pairings, with many travelers describing it as “authentic” and “authentically delicious.” It’s a chance to relax, chat, and really savor the local culinary scene.
Why This Tour Works
One of the big strengths here is the combination of education, tasting, and scenery. You won’t just be sipping wine; you’ll learn about the grapes, winemaking techniques, and local traditions from enthusiastic guides like Petrus, who’s frequently praised for his knowledge and friendliness. The scenic vineyard landscapes, especially in Peza, add that perfect backdrop to your tasting moments.
The Value Proposition
At $191.87, this tour offers a full day of curated experiences—visits to two different wineries, a gourmet lunch, local product tastings, and transportation—all in a small-group setting.
Given the reviews, many guests feel like it exceeds expectations, with some describing it as “a highlight of their trip” or “an experience you shouldn’t miss in Crete.” For wine enthusiasts or those interested in authentic local food, it delivers a level of intimacy and depth that can be hard to find on larger or more commercial tours.
The Real Deal from Travelers
Multiple reviewers highlight the knowledge and friendliness of the guides. For example, Shannen_K mentions Petrus being “extremely welcoming and friendly,” while Sarah_A emphasizes the guide’s detailed knowledge about Cretan wines and local culture.
Guests also appreciate the variety of wineries visited—ranging from small family-run to larger established estates—which showcase different sides of Crete’s wine-making scene.
The small group of just 6 people makes for a more relaxed and engaging experience, allowing plenty of opportunity for questions and interaction. Many reviews praise the attention to detail—from the quality of wine tastings to the deliciousness of the food. Olivia_P even calls the experience “incredible” and “memorable,” noting how the tour was filled with culture, wine, and food.
What Could Be Better?
While most feedback is glowing, some might find the price a bit high, especially if they’re used to more casual, independent wine tasting days. The tour is also only available from Heraklion and nearby areas, which might limit some travelers’ options if they’re staying further afield.
Also, since it’s a full-day experience, it demands a time commitment, which might not suit everyone—particularly those with limited mobility or those who prefer more flexible, free-form exploration.
Who Should Consider This Tour?

This experience is best suited for those who love wine and good food and want to gain insight into Crete’s wine culture in a relaxed, guided setting. It’s great for foodies seeking authentic local flavors and travelers who prefer a structured, all-inclusive day rather than navigating vineyards on their own.
If you appreciate small-group intimacy and the chance to learn directly from passionate guides, you’ll likely find this tour very rewarding.
The Sum Up: Is It Worth It?

For anyone wanting to combine wine tastings with scenic views and a taste of Crete’s culinary traditions, this tour offers a well-balanced, high-quality experience. The guides, excellent wines, and delicious lunch make it a standout choice for serious wine lovers and curious foodies alike.
If you value personalized attention and enjoy discovering the stories behind the drinks and dishes, this tour will satisfy those needs. The price is justified by the breadth of experiences, the quality of the wineries visited, and the local hospitality you’ll encounter. It's a solid pick for those who want a curated, memorable day in Crete.
But if you’re on a tight budget or prefer a more independent approach, you might find it more economical to explore vineyards on your own or opt for smaller tastings. Still, for an all-encompassing, educational, and tasty experience, this tour ticks a lot of boxes.
