Traveling to see the Northern Lights is like chasing a dream — elusive, mesmerizing, and best enjoyed with guides by your side. This Northern Lights Photography Tour from Tromsø promises not just a chance to witness the aurora borealis, but to do so comfortably, with expert guidance and plenty of useful tips for capturing the moment.
What we love about this tour is how it combines stunning scenery with personalized support. Many travelers mention the guides’ deep knowledge and friendly attitude, making the experience feel less like a tour and more like hanging out with friends who just happen to be experts at finding the best Aurora spots.
Plus, the fact that they provide tripods and photography assistance really helps those eager to photograph the lights—something that can be the difference between a good shot and a spectacular one.
It was honestly amazing. We had our trip with Anna and Joaquin. Joaquin was so dedicated to show us the best Northern Lights display, and he did. We would stop over every now and then since he would constantly find a new spot. His aurora knowledge is insane. You would see an empty sky and he would say "now there is a burst coming" and suddenly the sky would light up. We stopped at a beautiful stop for fire, soup, cookies and hot chocolate at the end. The small group made it feel personal and we had a wonderful time. We truly recommend it!!
Cloudy week in Tromsø, but Thomas and Lucas found us clear skies. They were very knowledgeable and provided helpful photography tips as well as delicious soup and hot chocolate. We had an amazing Aurora experience!
We’re so glad we booked our Northern Lights tour with Northern Soul Adventures! What really set this experience apart was having both a dedicated guide and driver for our small group of 15 — it made everything feel smooth, organized, and personal. Filip and Lucas were absolutely fantastic. They were engaging, shared fascinating insights about the aurora, and worked seamlessly as a team throughout the evening. We were lucky to have clear skies, and the increased solar activity treated us to an incredible light display! The extra touches truly elevated the experience — hand and foot warmers, use of tripods for photography, and delicious soup and hot drinks to keep us warm and comfortable…
The only caveat? Since the Northern Lights are nature’s show, they can’t be guaranteed. If you’re visiting during cloudy nights or the peak of the full moon, the spectacle might be faint or hidden. This means patience and a bit of luck are part of the game, no matter how skilled your guides are.
This tour is ideal for adventurers who want a relaxed, well-organized experience and are keen to learn about the science behind the Aurora while enjoying the Arctic wilderness. If you’re traveling with photography in mind or just want to maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights in comfort, this could be a great fit.

The Itinerary and How the Tour Unfolds
This 6-hour adventure begins with a pickup outside the Tourist Shop Tromsø Havn, a convenient spot in the city. From there, the experience is all about flexibility and tuning into the best possible conditions for viewing the Aurora. The guides are expert weather watchers, constantly monitoring conditions to find clear skies and microclimates that might be hiding the lights.
Filip and Lucas are perfect! Our hunt was memorable, they know everything about the Northern Lights, photography, and they are so kind.
Even though we didn't see the Northern Lights, I'm giving it 5 stars because our guide, Bogdan, was amazing. He did his best, but unfortunately, the weather was so bad and it was snowing so much that there was nothing he could do. Still, he tried until the very end. It was my birthday that day, and I really wanted to see the Northern Lights, I was very disappointed and sad that it didn't happen, but Bogdan's approach made sure we had the best night possible. Despite everything, it was a birthday I'll never forget. Thank you.
Wonderful tour. Thomas did an excellent job. It was extremely windy and cloudy at first. The group was fearful we'd see nothing. Thomas and Anna served warm drinks and snacks while Thomas explained the phenomenon and explained his love of the chase and stories of successful and not so successful outings. Patience was key. After a second stop we got a spectacular show. It was amazing. We got so many photos. After we all returned to the bus and were preparing to remove our thermal suits Thomas knocks on the side of the bus and calls us back. The skies gave us an encore! Magical!
Once a promising spot is found, the tour often heads to coastal islands outside city lights or sometimes even farther into Finland. Some nights, the guides’ efforts pay off quickly, and the Aurora dances across the sky early on. Other nights, patience is key—you’re prepared to wait hours in the Arctic wilderness, bundled up and surrounded by nature.
Why Location Matters
This tour’s strength is in its location flexibility. Instead of sticking to a fixed site, guides shuttle around to maximize your chances of seeing the Aurora. This means shorter drives when conditions are good, but also longer journeys into Finland or remote areas when needed.
The reviews show that this adaptability pays off: travelers love guides’ dedication, with some quoting guides who drove hundreds of kilometers to find clear skies — “Lucas & Joaquin drove and changed plans on the fly until they found a beautiful place,” one reviewer noted.
The Experience Around the Campfire
One of the most beloved aspects is the cozy campfire scene. After setting up in a remote spot, the group gathers around a warm fire, sharing stories, drinking hot chocolate, and enjoying hearty food like tomato soup or pasta.
GOOD . The guide was very friendly and helped with our problem with frozen camera 😉 Good explanations about aurora, the logistic was good, the meal provided was, great, especially with thatcold weather.
This was an awesome experience for my entire family, probably once in a lifetime. We were so lucky to have Tomas as our guide and Ana as our driver, both very professional and friendly. We stopped at 4 different locations and saw the aurora explode at each of them! Tomas was super enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the northern lights, he did his best so we could see the most. He is also a great photographer! He was very patient to take photos for each member of this tour, and the photos turned out great. We cannot thank them enough!!
Let me start by saying that this was THE BEST time of my life! Both Joaquin and Lucas took us to an area where the magic happened! The second I came off the tour bus there was a ginormous band of green, purple dancing across the sky! Oh what a site! My eyes were definitely blessed that night! I later saw pink and red, yes red, as well!!! The explosion of colors went off and on the entire time we were there. Everyone eventually sat down around the fire to have a delicious dinner and hot chocolate and then it was back to the auroras! THANK YOU Joaquin and Lucas for a night that i will remember for the rest of my life! You guys ROCK!
These moments of warmth and community are appreciated, especially amid the cold Arctic night. Many reviews mention the hot drinks, nourishing food, and the friendly atmosphere as highlights.

The vehicle is described as comfortable, well-equipped, and capable of navigating Arctic roads safely. Some guides even went as far as driving into Finland to find a better view, which shows real dedication. For travelers, this means a smoother, less stressful journey, especially if you’re not used to snowy, icy roads.
What About Weather and the Aurora Guarantee?
This is important. Since the Northern Lights are unpredictable, the tour cannot promise a sighting. Many reviews reflect this understanding, mentioning that even guides’ best efforts sometimes result in faint or no visible Aurora. However, the guides’ expertise and flexible routes significantly improve chances.
For example, one reviewer noted, “Despite being our second visit, we learned so much more & gained great insight,” underscoring that even if you don’t see the lights, the experience is enriching.
Cost and Value
Pricing is not detailed here, but reviews suggest that the tour offers great value considering the included amenities: transportation, warm clothing, photography help, hot drinks, food, and the chance to see the Aurora at all.
Beyond amazing. Filip and Lucas were fantastic guides. They were both happy to help and made everyone feel comfortable. We were very lucky with the conditions so with Filips expertise the photos included in our tour looked amazing in the previews. It a as great to hear the science behind the lights and to have full disclosure that what we see with our eyes is very different from what we would see in our photos.
Wonderful experience, perfectly conducted by our two brilliant guides Filip and Lucas – thank you for an unforgettable experience!
Our guide Joaquim was very knowledgeable and really cared about our experience. Our driver was amazing at getting us to different spots in challenging (for those of us not used to snow) conditions. Joaquin was able to pinpoint a possible spot and only a few moments later we were treated to natures light show at its best. Amazing evening for a first time northern light viewer!
The personalized attention and multiple locations visited, often far from city lights, justify the expense for many travelers. Plus, the small-group setting ensures you’re not just a number, adding to the overall quality.
