The Itinerary Breakdown

Starting at Largo Eroi del Mare in Bari at 9:00 am, the tour kicks off with a comfortable bus or minivan ride. The transportation aspect is straightforward, with parking fees covered and a vehicle that’s described as comfortable. This allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery as you hop from one UNESCO site to the next.
The first stop is Matera’s Sassi, a fascinating area of ancient cave dwellings, rock churches, and a settlement that’s been inhabited for thousands of years. Covering over 1,000 hectares, it’s easy to feel transported back in time here.
Tourists have raved about the amazing views and the chance to go inside some dwellings—you might even sample local wine or explore the small shops tucked into the caves, depending on how the guide frames the visit.
One of the most praised aspects is the guide’s storytelling. As one reviewer put it, the guide’s knowledge “brought it to life,” which is essential in a place like Matera where history is so layered and visually stunning.
Beautiful places, well arranged tour, very knowledgeable guide and time to have a lunch end enjoy ice-cream.
Amazing tour, knowledgeable guide. I would definitely recommend this tour. Both towns are worth a visit since they are so unique and historic.
This is an excellent way to explore Matera and Alberobello from Bari, without having to drive on your own. The coach was comfortable, the driver was very good, and Daniella our guide was excellent. The tours given by Daniella in both places were very informative, interesting and informative. As well, there was adequate time on our own for personal explorations and to have a bite to eat. We would highly recommend this tour.
However, some reviews mention that the tour can be a bit hurried; at Matera, there was a 30-minute delay caused by group misorganization, which cut into the time at the next destination.
Keep that in mind if you’re someone who likes to take photos or really soak in the atmosphere—you might want to arrive early or be prepared for a tighter schedule.
After about three hours, the group boards the vehicle again and heads toward Alberobello, the charming town famous for its conical Trulli houses. This UNESCO site is probably one of Italy’s most instantly recognizable villages, with its whitewashed buildings and fairy-tale roofs. You’ll have around two hours here, which is enough to wander the streets, peek inside a Trullo, and take plenty of photos.
Guides are known to take you inside some dwellings here, providing a more immersive experience. One reviewer appreciated being able to go inside a Trullo, which adds a layer of authenticity and fun to the visit. The visit to Alberobello also includes a chance for a brief taste of local wines, thanks to the guide’s local connections—quite a treat, especially if you’re into wine or local crafts.
The tour to Matera and Alberobello was amazing. Our tour guide enlightened us with history and brought it to life. It's a unique experience. The guide was great and the driver kept us safe with his driving
My family and I truly enjoyed this guided tour! It was wonderful to see two world heritage UNESCO sites, both in one day. The time spent in each city was ample to provide us with an overview of the history of both places.
Average tour. The positives were that the bus had AC and delivered us safely to destinations. The guide was somewhat knowledgeable, helpful to answer questions; however, the language barrier made understanding somewhat difficult. The constant smoking and limited opportunity to take photos made the actual tour a little unpleasant and frustrating. There are plenty of tours happening in these amazing places throughout the day that may deliver better value compared to what we paid at $170 per person.
What Travelers Love

Across the reviews, visitors consistently praise the guides who make history accessible and engaging. For example, one reviewer said, “Francesco made these two ancient cities come alive,” highlighting how effective a good guide can be in creating a memorable experience.
The scenery and architecture are another common highlight. The caves of Matera and the conical roofs of Trulli houses are both visual treats and a photographer’s paradise. Several reviews mention the well-organized itinerary and the amount of time allocated—enough to explore, but not so long that you feel overwhelmed or bored.
Plus, the transportation logistics are generally appreciated. With parking fees and transfers included, you don’t have to worry about navigating unfamiliar roads or finding parking—something many travelers consider a major plus.
Potential Drawbacks and Considerations

No tour is perfect, and some reviewers point out a few areas for improvement. A common critique is the timing—at times, the schedule can feel a bit rushed, especially if delays occur, as noted by a reviewer who lost 30 minutes in Matera.
It was only walking in the old part of Matera. The view of Matera was the best. We miss visiting caves, churches, what was written in the programme. The tour was a continous running.
Our guide Stephania was great. Her knowledge of Matera and Alberobello was amazing and I enjoyed the pace of both parts of the tour. Shw also had some personal anecdotes and knew sone of the locals, which made for a more peraonal experience. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for a comprehensive tour of Matera & Alberobello.
Thought Matera was beautiful and the history was very interesting. Quite a lot of steps but we managed well. Good amount if time here too. Alberello was lovely too and the trulli houses were so different to anything we’ve seen before. Felt we could have been given some local history on our bus journeys but some people had only paid for transport and not tour so maybe that’s why. Although we both enjoyed the day we did feel it was overpriced.
Another point raised is the organisational aspect—a couple of reviews mention issues with group management, such as roll calls or communication, which could be frustrating if you prefer a very smooth experience.
Some mention that the guide smoked during the tour, which might be unpleasant for non-smokers or those sensitive to smoke. Also, for those expecting a leisurely exploration with lots of cave visits or inside churches, you might find the time constraints and the focus on quick highlights somewhat limiting.
Regarding the value for money, one reviewer felt it was a bit overpriced for what was delivered, citing some organizational hiccups and the short time at certain sites. Still, many agree that the tour offers good value, especially considering the included transportation and guided insights.
Practical Details and What to Expect

The tour costs about $148 per person, which includes parking fees, transfers, and guided visits. The price is reasonable given the number of landmarks covered and the guided support, but the total experience depends on your expectations. If you're looking for a deep, leisurely dive into each site, this might feel a bit quick; for a broad overview, it works well.
The duration is approximately 9 hours, starting at 9:00 am and returning to Bari around 6-7 pm. Be prepared for a full day—comfortable shoes are a must, especially for the cobbled streets and uneven terrain.
The group size is limited to 23 travelers, which makes for a more intimate experience than large bus tours. For private options, hotel pickup and drop-off are available, adding extra convenience.
Inside the Sites

Matera is the star of the tour. Expect to see the famous Sassi, with their ancient caves and churches carved into the rocks. The site’s UNESCO status emphasizes its significance, and it’s a place where history feels alive. Expect plenty of photo opportunities, especially from vantage points offering panoramic views of the city built into the cliffs.
Alberobello offers a totally different vibe—small, fairy-tale-like houses built with conical roofs. You’ll probably spend time wandering the narrow streets, inside a Trullo or two, and possibly sampling local wine or treats. The atmosphere is charming, almost surreal, especially for first-timers to Italy’s unique rural architecture.
Final Thoughts

This guided tour from Bari to Matera and Alberobello is a great way to see two UNESCO sites, especially if you prefer having an expert guide to translate history and local stories. It’s particularly appealing for travelers who want an organized experience without the stress of driving or logistics.
While the schedule can feel tight, the quality of the guides and the visual impact of the sites make it worthwhile. If you’re after a relaxed, in-depth exploration of each location, you might want to consider the private tour option or extending your visit. But for a well-paced, informative day trip that hits the highlights, this tour is definitely worth considering.
