Thinking about taking a day trip through Italy’s charming Valle d’Itria? This tour from Bari promises a mix of seaside cliffs, whitewashed hilltop towns, and picturesque villages—all packed into roughly 10 hours.

While we haven’t personally joined this exact trip, based on reviews and details, it appears to be a solid option for travelers looking to get a taste of southern Italy’s famed towns without the hassle of navigating on your own.

One thing we love about this experience is how it balances free exploration with a structured itinerary. You’re transported comfortably in an air-conditioned bus, then given plenty of time to wander, take photos, and soak in the scenery. Plus, the three stops showcase distinct flavors of Puglia—coastal charm, hilltop elegance, and quaint village life.

This is essentially a self guided tour. There is no guide. You will be given a digital itinerary with links to Google map navigation to visit places of interest at these 3 destinations. Make sure that you know how to get back to the bus at the appointed time. There is a Google map link to the bus parking. All 3 destinations are very beautiful. The only drawback is that time is limited at each place.
Janae J
Amazing, beautiful and worth every minute! I really enjoyed our free time to explore. Every place had something different to offer.

First, that everything is done via Google maps , not a guide , and not even a nice driver . The music played on the bus is extremely high in volume and you can not even rest , specially coming back to Bari .

A second highlight is the value; at around $65, it offers a lot of sightseeing for a full day, especially considering the included parking, transport, and a helpful brochure.

However, there’s one notable point to consider: this isn’t a guided tour with a dedicated guide at each location. You’ll be exploring largely on your own, with a brochure and some basic info provided. If you prefer guided commentary at each stop or a more curated experience, this may feel a bit hands-off.

Also, timing and logistical details, such as the pick-up and drop-off points, matter if you’re staying nearby or have specific needs.

This tour works best for travelers who want to see multiple towns without the stress of planning transport or parking. It’s suited for those comfortable with self-navigation and who enjoy a flexible, independent approach to sightseeing. It’s particularly appealing if you’re looking for good value, a full day of exploring, and the chance to experience three of Italy’s most photogenic spots in one go.

It was great being able to get there by bus and exploring on your own. No tour to follow. They give you a map and you can download it on your phone which will give you directions of where to visit. You have the capability of skipping a site if you like. Just make sure you have phone data and bring your phone charger.
Ruan M
This 'tour' is really a bus ride to the various towns. You get a guide that u can follow and ample time to discover on your own which we liked. If you are expecting a tour guide, this is not the tour for you.
Pina D
It was great the first and second stop should be longer , too much to see not enough time. The last stop should be the shortest. It was wonderful, loved every minute . I recommend it.

Polignano a Mare

This seaside town is often the star of trips to Italy’s Adriatic coast. Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Polignano offers stunning cliffs and crystal-clear waters that beckon for photos or a quick dip. The historic center is dotted with narrow streets, arches, and flower-filled balconies, giving it a special small-town charm.

You’ll also spot remnants of the town’s diverse influences—Arab, Byzantine, Spanish, and Norman—reflected in its architecture and historic towers.

Travelers consistently mention the beauty of Polignano’s sea caves and dramatic cliffs, making it a perfect first stop. From reviews, it’s clear that many find the two-hour window just right for wandering, snapping pictures, and soaking in the views. One reviewer even called it “sensational,” urging others to visit. Be prepared for some walking on uneven streets, but it’s all part of the fun.

Ostuni

Perched on a hill, Ostuni earns its nickname as the “White City.” The bright white houses and narrow streets create an almost fairy-tale atmosphere, especially against the backdrop of the surrounding green fields and distant sea views.

Enjoyable leisurely day. Each stop allowed for each person time to walk around at their own pace. Each town had its own charm. We would have gladly paid a bit more for a prerecorded historical guide delivered electronically. Some stops could have been reduced in time; we felt that getting back to the morning meeting place earlier would have been beneficial in securing a seat in a restaurant; limited in the central area.

This is not a guided tour! I loved it being on our own to Explore we had plenty of time at each location!! Wear comfortable shoes you will need them.
Diane W
Great description, fabulous driver and the guided book was perfect! The mapping was easy to follow and highlighted keys areas to see

The highlight here is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its stunning rose window and detailed façade. From its terraces, you’ll get panoramic views of olive groves and countryside.

You’ll have about 2.5 hours in Ostuni—plenty of time to stroll through the historic center, perhaps enjoy a coffee or local snack, and take in the views. Many reviews mention the lively Piazza della Libertà, a great spot to relax and people-watch. The town’s architecture and views are frequently praised, though some advise wearing comfortable shoes due to the hilly terrain.

Locorotondo

The final stop is Locorotondo, a charming circular village famous for its white houses with flower-adorned balconies and sloping limestone roofs called “cummerse.” It’s a quieter, more intimate spot, great for wandering cobbled streets and appreciating local charm. The town’s layout and architecture earned it an Orange Flag for harmony and accessibility, so it’s quite pedestrian-friendly.

From the village, you can enjoy sweeping views of vineyards and olive groves—great for wine lovers. Many visitors have found the two-hour stay just enough to explore the town’s beauty and enjoy some local wines or a leisurely walk. It’s a peaceful end to a busy day, giving you a chance to reflect on the trip before heading back to Bari.

The Logistics and Experience

Valle d'Itria Tour: Polignano, Ostuni e Locorotondo, da Bari - The Logistics and Experience

Transport and Timing

The tour’s main appeal is the ease of transport—you’re picked up from Bari in an air-conditioned vehicle, then driven comfortably between towns. The drive from Bari to Polignano is approximately 30 km, so you’ll spend less time in transit and more time exploring, which many reviews appreciate.

The schedule has you leaving at 8:30 AM and returning around 6:30 PM. In between, the stops are well-timed to avoid rushing but also to fit all three towns into one day. Some reviews mention that timing is tight but manageable, especially if you’re comfortable exploring independently.

Cost and Value

At around $65 per person, this tour offers quite a lot—transport, parking fees, and the flexibility to explore. Reviewers frequently mention it as good value, especially compared to guided tours that can be more expensive and less flexible. The inclusion of a brochure with descriptions and maps helps you orient yourself, making the experience more independent.

What’s Included and Not

The package covers transportation, parking fees, and a written brochure. However, there’s no guide or official commentary, so your experience depends on your curiosity and self-guided footwork. Also, bottled water isn’t included, so bringing some along might be a good idea. While many travelers find the free time enough, a few wished for more detailed guide info or recorded commentary during transit.

Viet L
This was our first “smart tour” and we really appreciate the concept. The tour operators handled the boarding process well and provided a booklet with descriptions of the places included in the tour, as well as links to Google maps for the recommended self guided tours. The driver was very clear about drop off and pick up places and times for each location. We had ample time to explore each town at our own pace. I would definitely do another smart tour.
ANTHONY C
The towns were very charming. I feel this better to go on a guided tour. Our coach bus was comfortable and the driver was excellent.
MARIA A
Well organised tour! Enough time to see the 3 places! the driver was very good. I would prefer the music in the bus shouldn't be so loud.

Customer Experience

The reviews are generally positive, with many praising the driver’s professionalism and the scenic beauty. A handful of travelers wished for more guidance or closer drop-off points to minimize walking distance. A minority had issues with logistical coordination or external factors like city traffic or train strikes—highlighting that some circumstances outside the tour’s control can impact the day.

Suitability for Travelers

This tour is ideal if you prefer to explore independently but want the convenience of organized transport. It’s great for those who enjoy setting their own pace and discovering towns at their leisure. If you’re after a guided commentary or detailed storytelling at each site, this might not be the best fit. Plus, those who value comfort and flexibility will appreciate the well-managed schedule.

The Bottom Line: Who Should Consider This Tour?

If you’re looking for a straightforward way to see three of Puglia’s most iconic towns without the hassles of planning logistics or navigating traffic and parking, this tour hits the mark. It offers good value, scenic views, and the freedom to explore as you wish.

The lack of a dedicated guide may feel limiting for those wanting detailed history or storytelling—so if immersive guided tours are your thing, look elsewhere.

Travelers who enjoy scenic drives and spontaneous wandering will find this trip enjoyable. It suits independent-minded visitors comfortable with self-guided exploration, but it might be less suitable for those needing more structured guidance or assistance during the day. Overall, it’s a flexible, affordable way to experience the charm of Italy’s Valle d’Itria in one full day.
