Taking a tour that combines authentic transport, historic sites, and local eats sounds like a good way to spend a day in Malta—at least, that’s what this vintage bus experience promises. We’ve looked into this 4-hour guided adventure to help you decide if it might fit into your Malta itinerary. It’s a mix of history, culture, and a touch of fun riding on a classic Maltese bus.
What really catches our eye about this tour are the nostalgic ride aboard a colorful ‘Xarabank’ bus—these old-school vehicles are a charming way to travel like a local—and the chance to visit the Aviation Museum and the iconic Mosta Dome. The inclusion of a Maltese platter also sounds like a tasty way to sample some local flavors.
However, a common concern is that some reviews mention the tour can feel a bit rushed, especially around the sites. This is something to keep in mind if you prefer to linger longer at attractions. Still, overall, this tour appears well-suited for those who want a blend of history, authentic transport experience, and a manageable schedule, especially if you’re curious about Malta’s WWII history or iconic architecture.
I loved this tour! Pick up via minibus was on time and took us to meet the old Maltese bus, driver and guide Miriam. The old bus from the 1930’s was fabulous! Wooden and rickety and such a novelty. We went to the Malta Aviation society and had a tour around the facility learning about the history of the planes and their pilots. A very informative and enjoyable tour! We then headed to Mosta for a quick tour of the WW2 bunker before a guided tour of the ‘Miracle’ church. It is beautiful. After we went for a Maltese platter in the cafe nearby. It was very tasty and the staff were very friendly. We then were brought to meet our minibus driver back to the hotel. Overall a great way to spend…
Being driven at and between stops in a vintage bus that is around 100 years old is a change of pace. Malta Aviation museum is a must visit with ww2 planes to early to modern jet fighters in display. In the museum there there is two cockpits of jet liners which one of them you can take abit of a look inside. With the Mosta church I am very impressed of it and lucky that bomb that dropped through the dome at ww2 is a dud. After that is the underground tunnels with some displays. Got some Maltese tucker with a short film of the mosta church with the sound being overlap with other sound. A very good outing the tour guild done her job well.
riding in a vintage bus was a wonderful experience, and our driver David was lovely.the guide for the Aviation tour was extremely knowledgeable, overall a great tour
If you’re someone who enjoys guided trips that blend stories with sightseeing and don’t mind a quick pace, this experience could definitely be worth considering.

The Vintage Maltese Bus Experience
Starting with transportation, you’ll hop into a colorful ‘Xarabank’ bus—these are artful relics of Malta’s past, built between the 1950s and 1970s. These buses were once the backbone of local transit, decorated with slogans, saints, and bright designs, making the ride itself a memorable part of the tour.
We love the idea of seeing Malta through the eyes of history—imagine riding in a bus that’s over 50 years old, full of character and stories. The guides usually share tidbits about the buses’ history and the traditions of Maltese public transport, which adds a layer of authenticity.
According to reviews, the ride is not just functional but also fun, with guests commenting on the “change of pace” and “being driven at and between stops in a vintage bus that is around 100 years old.” It’s a different, more personal way to experience the island, compared to modern coaches or transfers.
The Aviation Museum at Ta’ Qali
Next, you’ll explore the Malta Aviation Museum, housed on the site of a former Royal Air Force airfield. It’s a highlight for anyone interested in aircraft or WWII. The museum offers exhibits showcasing planes from the Second World War and beyond, including some that are still capable of flying.
What travelers frequently mention is the quality of the displays—”brilliant,” “full of planes from WW2 to modern jet fighters”—and the opportunity to peek inside jetliners’ cockpits. It’s a relatively large museum, spread across three hangars, with a focus on Malta’s air history.
We (two adults and one 10 year old) enjoyed our tour very much, the 1930's vintage bus was so much fun to ride on, the aviation museum was brilliant, just enough time there. The Mosta Dome was absolutely amazing and a must-see for anyone coming to Malta. The WW11 shelters were good, too. The Platter were delicious and a great way to taste some traditional Maltese food. All in all, a brilliant 4 hours.
The vintage bus was great, the air museum excellent, the tour by Paul was amazing and so informative. The Mosta church is beautiful. A great tour but there was not enough time at the Air Museum or the Mosta church – it felt very rushed. The food platter was very basic and small. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the tour but needed more time to look around.
Wonderful day nothing it was perfect
The museum’s involvement in aircraft preservation and restoration also speaks to the care taken to keep these pieces of history alive. If you’re into aviation or military history, you’ll appreciate the artifacts, models, and the detailed stories behind them.
Mosta Dome & Its Miraculous History
The Mosta Rotunda, Malta’s largest church, is truly impressive. Its massive unsupported dome, inspired by the Pantheon, dominates the town’s skyline. The story tied to its history is compelling: during WWII, a German bomb pierced the dome but failed to explode—seen locally as a miracle.
During your visit, you'll see the church’s interior, the large-scale model of the building, and the replica of the bomb. Climbing to the bell tower or exploring the inner gallery offers great views and a chance to appreciate the church’s grandeur from different angles.
Reviews indicate that the Mosta church is a must-see, with visitors frequently expressing awe at its size and beauty. One reviewer even mentioned being "very impressed," which highlights just how striking the site is in person.
More Great Tours NearbyWWII Shelters and Their Significance
The last stop is the WWII Shelter, located near the church parvis. Dug by hand in 1940, these tunnels served as safe havens during regular air raids—a powerful reminder of Malta’s wartime hardships. Today, you can walk through these narrow passages and see exhibits of old tools and implements, giving a tangible sense of the sacrifices made by locals.
Guests who have visited remark that the shelters are "interesting" and provide a glimpse into Malta’s wartime resilience. It’s a straightforward yet poignant experience that complements the other historical stops.
Food & Refreshments
To round off the experience, you’ll enjoy a Malta-style platter, which offers a taste of traditional flavors. Reviewers say the platter is “delicious,” providing a good way to sample local ingredients without fuss. The tour also includes coffee and water, making sure you stay refreshed.
Some reviews mention that the platter might be “small and basic,” but most agree it’s a nice touch to the overall experience. It’s a good opportunity to relax and chat about what you’ve seen.
Practical Details & Considerations

- Price & Value: At $59, this tour balances sightseeing, transport, and food reasonably well. If you're into history and want a taste of authentic Maltese transport, it’s a fair deal.
- Duration & Pacing: Four hours means it’s a half-day adventure. Some reviews note it can be a bit rushed—especially at the Aviation Museum and Mosta church—so if you prefer to take your time exploring, this might feel hurried.
- Transport: The vintage bus adds charm but also means you should be comfortable with older-style transport. No mention of it being unsuitable for mobility impairments, but that’s worth checking if needed.
- Guide & Group: The knowledgeable guides are highlighted positively, often described as “full of stories,” though one review pointed out some communication issues. Small group sizes seem typical, which helps keep it personal.
- Availability & Cancellation: It’s flexible—free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance—and includes hotel pickup from nearby Mellieha, which makes it easier to plan around your schedule.
