A detailed look at the Dubrovnik Private Tour to Montenegro, Kotor, and Perast

If you’re planning a trip to Dubrovnik and considering a day-trip into Montenegro, this private tour offers a compelling blend of history, scenery, and local charm. While we haven’t personally taken this exact tour, based on reviews and the detailed itinerary, it promises a well-rounded experience that appeals to travelers who want more than just ticking off sights — they want quality, flexibility, and an authentic feel.

What we really like about this experience is the personalized service — with a private van, your guide can tweak the day to suit your interests. Also, the chance to see iconic landmarks like Kotor’s city walls and Our Lady of the Rocks makes this trip feel special. That said, a potential snag is the early start recommended during peak summer months to avoid border congestion, which might be challenging if you’re not an early riser.

Starting the Day and Transportation

Dubrovnik: Private Tour to Montenegro, Kotor, and Perast - Starting the Day and Transportation

Most tours kick off early, around 7 or 8 AM, especially between July 1st and August 15th, to beat the high border traffic. The group is transported in an air-conditioned van, with Wi-Fi available, making the long drives more comfortable. With a private guide at the wheel, you’ll avoid the chaos of big bus groups, and that allows the flexibility to ask questions or make slight modifications — some reviews mention guides being very accommodating.

Exploring Kotor: The UNESCO Gem

Dubrovnik: Private Tour to Montenegro, Kotor, and Perast - Exploring Kotor: The UNESCO Gem

The first major stop is Kotor, a coastal town famed for its massive city walls that wind along the hills surrounding the Old Town. These walls, very similar to Dubrovnik’s, are a highlight because they give you a sense of history and offer breathtaking views over the bay. You can opt to pay the entry fee (about 8 euros per person) if you want to walk along the walls — a must-do for fans of panoramic scenery.

Many reviews emphasize how the walk along the walls offers an incredible vantage point. One reviewer said, “Walking along the walls will bring you to the highest peak, from which you can enjoy a view of the entire bay of Kotor, perfect for a good photo.” You might also enjoy the cable car ride, which adds to the sense of adventure and offers a sweeping view of the region.

Perast: The Silent Beauty

Next up is Perast, a town often called the “quietest town in Boka” because of its car-free zone and peaceful vibe. It’s a place where you can appreciate well-preserved villas and historic architecture against a stunning waterfront backdrop. The town itself is small but packed with charm, and walking its streets allows you to soak in local life and admire the picturesque views.

The highlight here is the boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, a tiny island with a church and museum. The boat ride is only about 10 minutes, but it’s a highlight for many — a chance to see a unique cultural site that’s closely tied to local tradition.

A fabulous day out. Stunning scenery and Petar was a great guide and happy to tweak the tour as we wanted. The stop off to see Dubrovnik from above first thing in the morning made a great start. And the detour to the cable car in Kotor was also fabulous. A great day to remember

Petar was an amazing tour guide who is very knowledgeable, patient, prompt and charming. He clearly knows the area well and was able to answer all our questions. He was also very prompt and helpful as he arranged a last minute ride for us at a reasonable cost. We highly recommend this tour with Petar.

Our experience was wonderful. We started our trip in the rain, which was a bummer but no one’s fault. First stop was the border where we got our passport stamped and headed into Montenegro. We then went to Persst and had hot chocolate (because it was so damn cold). There is an option in Perast to take a short boat ride over to the private island. But because of the rain we chose not to. Our second stop was in Kotor where we had three hours which gave us enough time to shop and have lunch. We walked the entire length of the old town. There are a gazillion cats in the old city. All of them sweet and well fed! And had lunch at an amazing locals restaurant called Mesara Tangja. It is the local…

“Thanks to the boat trip, you get a real sense of Montenegro’s maritime history,” a reviewer noted, emphasizing how these small details elevate the experience.
