If you’re dreaming of icy landscapes and dramatic glacier scenes, this Skaftafell: Extra Small Group Glacier Adventure might catch your eye. While I haven’t personally taken this tour, the buzz around it is pretty strong, and from what I’ve gathered, it offers a solid way to get closer to Iceland’s glaciers without the crowds and with a more adventurous spirit.

What really draws us in is how this experience combines expert-guided insight and small-group intimacy—making it feel more like a personal journey than a typical tourist stop. Plus, traveling in a modified 4×4 to access less-traveled parts of the glacier sounds like a real treat.

Still, if you’re a bit uneasy about walking on uneven terrain or unsure about the physical challenge, it’s worth noting this trip is marked as moderate difficulty, with some climbs and uneven paths.

This was hands down the best tour we did in Iceland, even with really bad weather. Our guide was super friendly, cheerful, professional, and totally dedicated. It was exactly as advertised — a small group of 8, and we got to go further in than other teams. We even got to taste fresh glacier water thanks to our guide! I’m sorry I’ve forgotten the guide’s name since it’s been a while, but we’ll never forget you. Huge thanks for making this such an awesome trip. We did a short glacier walk with another company 7 years ago and weren’t sure if we should do it again, but that worry was totally unnecessary. If you’re planning a glacier walk, I’d 100% go for this 4-hour small-group…

Families with older children and adventure lovers will likely find this one particularly rewarding, but it’s not ideal for very young kids or travelers with mobility issues.

f you haven’t booked the Skaftafell glacier tour yet, you’re missing out! We were a family of five with our young adult kids, and it was an incredible day. Javi was amazing! He was super patient and led us up the glacier to breathtaking views. He made sure the tour was at the right level for our group, not too easy and not too hard. Having a small group tour is key. This is definitely the highlight of the trip to Iceland! The guide is humorous and fun, and explains glacier knowledge and ice climbing techniques in a very easy-to-understand way. The whole journey is exciting and enjoyable, making it an unforgettable experience. I 200% recommend this itinerary!!! (If you are still hesitating between Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Skaftafell, I strongly recommend this one!!)

The best trip we’ve ever done. We did this trip in March and it is the best money we’ve ever spent. The whole trip lasted over six hours because it was such a beautiful day! Antoine is the best guide – so much fun, explained everything brilliantly, and knew how to push us without us feeling like we were! The glacier was like nothing else we’ve ever seen in the world – and getting to properly explore it (and so safely, thanks to Antoine) really is a memory that will last a lifetime – it was unbelievably stunning, and getting to explore it for so long was unbelievable. No other tour group that we saw had anywhere near as much fun or adventure as we did! Thank you again for an incredible …

I loved the small group atmosphere. Jose made us feel safe and taught us a lot. He took us essentially to the top of the glacier and we had a blast drinking glacier water and admiring the views. This is not for the faint of heart we climbed 1500 feet to get to the “top”. Jose is also a great photographer and got some amazing pics of my sister and I.

The stunning scenery is another theme that comes through loud and clear. Multiple reviewers mention that the glacier landscape is “otherworldly” and “unbelievably stunning,” making the effort worth every step. You’ll love the views of ice formations, the chance to drink glacier water, and the sense of adventure that ramps up as you explore less-traveled areas.

People also appreciate the small-group atmosphere, which allows more interaction and personalized guidance. One reviewer shared that their guide was also a talented photographer, capturing moments that made the trip even more memorable.

Our activity was perfect and our guide Antoine was a legend. He went above and beyond to shows us some amazing and unique spots including going inside an ice cave and ice climbing out. We would definitely do it again. Also Antoine was very knowledgeable and explained to us a lot about the geology of the glacier in a way that anyone even without any previous knowledge would understand.
Anne
Our guide Javier was really nice and we learned lots of things during the activity !

First things first — Get My Guide is totally lame on the description. This is a FULL DAY, HARDCORE hike on a glacier. Hundreds of feet up, repelling into crevasses, and at any moment, you feel like you could literally slide off to your death. That being said, this was AMAZING. Our guide, Antoine, was fabulous, very encouraging, and quite funny. You WILL learn to trust your crampons. Your body will hurt when you are done. But what an amazing opportunity. Pack a light lunch. We went in November — ridiculously cold and windy, but you are exerting so much effort crunching your way up that you stay warm.

While it doesn’t include food or hotel transportation, that’s typical for this type of adventure, and renting hiking shoes on-site is straightforward if you don’t have suitable footwear. Just remember to bring warm clothing, sunglasses, water, and snacks.
