Introduction
If you’re considering a day trip around western Crete, this Elafonisi & Milia Mountain Jeep Tour might just be what you’re looking for. Based on the glowing reviews and detailed itineraries, it’s a well-loved option for travelers craving a mix of stunning beaches, scenic mountain landscapes, and authentic local experiences.
We love how this tour combines the thrill of off-road driving with relaxing beach time and a genuine taste of Crete’s mountain hospitality.
One of the most beautiful places we’ve seen. Dimitris was full of very interesting knowledge, fun, and so very friendly. Can’t wait to go on another adventure with this company. Perfect beach. Perfect day!
We travelled on a windy day but the experience was still very pleasant and the guide was very knowledgeable and hospitable. The group we joined was fun; a great way to meet other travellers!
Yiannis was very professional and made sure the trip was easy and enjoyable from start to finish. Although some might say that Elafonisi is overrated, I disagree. We had a really enjoyable time at the beach, the water was beautiful and we got some really nice refreshments from the kiosk there. We also had a very tasty Cretan lunch at Milia Mountain.
Two things particularly stand out: first, the personalized attention provided by the small group—usually no more than six people—and second, the luxurious beach loungers reserved just for you at Elafonisi. That said, it’s a long day (around 8 to 9 hours), so if you’re not a fan of full-day adventures or want a more relaxed pace, this might feel a bit packed.
Still, this tour is ideal for those who want a meaningful, well-organized experience that goes beyond just a transfer to a beach.
Who would enjoy this most? If you’re after a blend of scenic drives, cultural insights, and the chance to relax in style, this tour could be an excellent fit. Families with older children, couples, or friends who appreciate a mix of adventure and comfort will find it rewarding. Just be prepared for a full day of exploring.

Starting Point and Early Morning Pickup
The tour kicks off at 8:00 am with pickup from hotels in and around Chania, a real plus for convenience. The small vehicle (a comfortable 7-seater 4WD with AC) ensures a smooth ride, even on winding mountain roads.
I have to say our guide Nikolas was amazing and really made the trip. He was so thoughtful and made sure we were having the best experience. Elafonisi beach was by far the best beach I have ever visited. It was so beautiful and the added touch of the reserved loungers and umbrellas was amazing. I can’t recommend this enough. The second stop at Milia Restaurant was the best food I have had in Greece so far. It was such an unexpected treat and just perfection. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for the perfect day!
First and foremost the entire experience was simply amazing from start to finish. Let me start by saying our tour guide Nikos was absolutely fantastic. He was knowledgeable in all aspects not only on this rich history of the island of Crete and the Cretan people but in Greek history in general. Secondly I never felt like I was being treated like just a tourist the entire time I felt like I was being treated like family as a guest in someones home. Nikos made my partner and I feel like we've known him for years and he did a great job making the experience feel personal. The beach it self was beautiful and it's something you can't explain you just have to go and see it for yourself. Calm relax…
The experience was fantastic! Our guide, Nick, was amazing. He was very personable and knowledgeable. The beach was wonderful , just wish we could have stayed longer. The drive up to the mountain restaurant was extraordinary as was the delicious meal.
Many reviews highlight how well the drivers handle these routes, with comments like, “Dionisis did a good job giving us the history and background on the sites we visited,” and “the drive into the mountains was beautiful while we learned about the native bees!”
Scenic Drive through Crete’s Varied Terrain
From Chania, you’ll head south into the heart of the island. As you drive, you’ll pass through lush valleys of lemon, orange, avocado, and olive trees—great for nature lovers. Then, the journey takes you through the Topolia Gorge, a highlight for many. Here, the rugged, wild scenery makes for fantastic photos, and you might even spot mountain goats or vultures soaring overhead, as one review describes.
The drive into the mountains isn’t just about the views; it’s also about the experience of traveling in a luxurious, well-maintained vehicle while your guide shares stories about local culture, history, and wildlife. For many, the scenic drive itself is a memorable part of the day, with comments like “the drive is breathtaking” and “the natural beauty and wildlife are incredible.”
Stop 1: Elafonisi Beach
After about 3 hours and 20 minutes of driving, you’ll arrive at Elafonisi Beach, regarded as one of the most popular beaches worldwide. The early start helps you beat the crowds—an appreciated detail, as several reviews mention arriving before the masses. Your reserved loungers and umbrellas make relaxing straightforward, without the hassle of fighting for space or searching for a spot.
Absolutely fabulous. The car was great, Nikolas was absolutely wonderful and everything was as advertised. We loved not only enjoying the beautiful beach but having chairs ready for us and in the front! Then the meal and experience at Mila Mountian were above and beyond. One of the best meals of our life. I can’t recommend this trip or Nikolas more!
Very fun trip. We enjoyed seeing the beach and the mountains in the same day. We loved that our loungers and umbrella were reserved for us because the beach was very busy. The food at Milia was amazing and it was so beautiful up there. Dimitris was an awesome guide and very knowledgeable. We would highly recommend this experience.
This should be a must on everyone’s bucket list! It was perfect from start to finish! Our guide Niko was prompt for pick-up time and very informative. He shared important history and cultural points about Crete. The beach was beautiful and relaxing! The tour reserves front row umbrella and chairs, which were much appreciated! On our way back we stopped to have lunch at Milia, a small mountain village. The lunch provided at Milia Restaurant is one of the best meals I have ever had! The village is so unique and peaceful!
The beach is famous for its pinkish sands and shallow, clear waters, great for swimming and wading. While some reviews mention that the pink hue isn’t as pronounced in peak season, the natural beauty remains striking. Expect about 3 hours here to explore, swim, or simply enjoy the scenery at your own pace.
What makes Elafonisi special?
It’s not just about the Instagram-worthy sands; many travelers comment on how untouched and peaceful it feels early in the day. Plus, the reserved loungers ensure you can relax comfortably, which is often a point of praise from guests who appreciate good planning. One review states, “The bathroom facilities and lounge chairs waiting on the beach were great for a relaxed day.”
Stop 2: Milia Mountain Retreat
Next, you’ll venture up into the mountains to Milia Mountain Retreat, a place that offers a stark contrast to the beach. This authentic 17th-century mountain settlement has been transformed into an eco-friendly complex, recognized by National Geographic for eco- and agro-tourism.
Here, the atmosphere is cozy, with stone houses and no electricity—an experience that seems to resonate deeply with many visitors.
You must do this! Dimitris was the best tour guide I’ve ever had. He was so kind and welcoming, and we learned so much history of Cretan culture. The drive is very scenic, the beach was AMAZING! The lunch on Milia mountain was the best food I’ve had on my trip.
The tour guide dimitri was extremely knowledgeable and provided wonderful contextual and historical information regarding the various destinations we visited. The beaches and the mountain lodge were stunningly beautiful and the food provided was out of this world! Probably some of the best money I’ve ever spent on a tour – definitely one you don’t want to miss – Stav
The tour was a perfect blend of what we were looking for on our short trip to Crete. We saw a beautiful beach, traditional culture, and enjoyed delicious food. Nikos was a good communicator; friendly and informative. We feel like we made a friend. I highly recommend this tour!
Your lunch at Milia is a real highlight—delicious Cretan cuisine paired with local wine or beer, or soft drinks if preferred. The setting is beautiful, with panoramic mountain views and a tranquil vibe that guests love. The hour and a half at Milia also give you a chance to absorb local culture, take photos, and enjoy the fresh mountain air.
Stop 3: Topolia Gorge
Before heading back, you’ll take a brief 10-minute stop at Topolia Gorge. The scenery here is described as “wild and scenic,” with rugged landscapes, local wildlife, and soaring vultures. Guests often find this a refreshing change of pace—a short but impactful stop that provides excellent photo opportunities and a chance to stretch.
The Return and Overall Duration
The full day wraps up after this, with the return drive to Chania. Expect the total duration to be around 8 to 9 hours, depending on the time spent at each stop. Many reviews note how well-organized and smooth the day is, with praise for the guides’ knowledge and friendliness.
What’s Included and What’s Not?

The tour’s value lies heavily in what’s included: lunch with drinks, reserved loungers and umbrellas, bottled water, fruits, local energy bars, and attentive guides. Having your sunbeds reserved at Elafonisi is a big deal—many other tours don’t offer this, and guests appreciate the convenience.
A great way to see a little bit of Crete. Our driver was very knowledgeable during our drive to the beach. Elafonisi beach was beautiful and enough time was spent there to be able to relax and explore the sea (loungers were reserved for us). The meal we then had at Milia Mountain Retreat was lovely, we had a variety of dishes to try between us, all of which were tasty, the local beer was great too! We were back at our hotel by about 4.30pm so not too long of a day either, money well spent!
Our guide, Nick, was wonderful! He was sweet and informative and a pleasure to spend our day with! The beach is a must see. What made this trip so much better than others is that they give you an early start and when you arrive they have lounge chairs and umbrellas waiting. I had no idea what a big peek this is- but there are literally thousands of people there and probably 50 chairs, so to have them reserved for you is huge. I felt famous. The lunch was super unique and delicious, but know that it’s a windy mountain road so pack your Dramamine if needed. It was a wonderful day, would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great adventure from Chania.
We really enjoyed our tour experience. Our tour guide, Nikolas, was very engaging and knowledgeable. He even played quiz games along the way which made things more entertaining. Our time at Elafonisi beach was very nice followed by a trek into the mountains (not for the faint of heart) to enjoy a traditional Cretan lunch. Overall amazing day!
Extras like beach towels and gratuities aren’t included, so bring your own if needed. The tour also offers liability insurance and is operated by experienced drivers trained by the company, ensuring safety and professionalism.
