We’ve reviewed a popular customizable experience that promises to take you to windmills, cheese factories, and quaint villages—tailored to your interests.

One thing we love about this tour is its flexibility—you can start from virtually any location in Amsterdam or even Schiphol Airport, with pickup and drop-off included. That said, a potential consideration is that this tour can be a bit pricey, especially if your group is small, and some stops might require extra entry fees.

We had a fabulous 4 hour tour scheduled starting with pick up from Schipol airport. Our driver/guide was Guillermo and he was courteous, kind and helpful especially with my mother who is elderly and mobility challenged. He took us to Zaanse Schaans, a local cheese factory & beautiful drive back through the country. His English was very good and driving was safe. I had great communication with Rudy before we left home and everything was as explained. Two big thumbs up to this company and our driver!
Nicole P
Great tour and Singh was a great driver. Since it was a customizable tour, we enjoyed it very much. Singh made it better.
Susan P
Our guide was knowledgeable about the windmills and clogs. It was a cute village setting. The dairy farm was very interesting learning about the robotic milking stations and the cheese tasing was fun.

Whether you’re a lover of scenic countryside, interested in Dutch traditions like clog-making and cheese tasting, or simply want a hassle-free way to maximize your short time, this tour could suit your style. It’s especially appealing for travelers who prefer private, tailored experiences over crowd-packed group tours.

The Itinerary — What to Expect

Dam Square

Your adventure kicks off with a visit to Dam Square, the heart of Amsterdam. It’s a bustling hub packed with history and lively street scenes. While entry is free, it’s an excellent starting point to get your bearings before heading out to the countryside. Depending on your preference, the guide can provide a quick overview of the city’s landmarks or simply serve as a jumping-off spot.

Zaanse Schans

Next, you’ll head to Zaanse Schans, a classic open-air museum showcasing traditional Dutch windmills and wooden clog factories. This spot is great for snapping photos of iconic windmills and learning about Dutch craftsmanship. Be aware that some windmills have a small admission fee, as they are operated by volunteers.

It was great to get outside of the city and see a bit of the countryside. Lots of tourists go to these areas, so there will be bus loads, but it was still fun and very nice to have our private tour. Ramzi was very attentive and helpful with our multi-generation family group, and even dropped half of us at the airport afterward.
Jennifer S
Our guide, Ramsey was absolutely wonderful. He was energetic, explained the area attractions very well and was very open to do whatever we needed to do. He was very accommodating and very pleasant.
Enrique B
Our driver/guide was flexible and covered all areas promised in the tour description. He found us a local restaurant to have the famous pancakes. He got us to Keukenhof Gardens on time for our entry time and guided us through the Gardens. Got us to a Windmill before it closed for a special event. Flexible and friendly.

Here, many visitors love how the guides make it educational and fun, with one reviewer mentioning, “Our guide, Ramzi, was absolutely fantastic!!”

Keukenhof (Springtime Only)

If you’re visiting during spring (from March 20 to May 11, 2025), a stop at Keukenhof is a highlight. With millions of tulips and bulb flowers, it’s a sight to behold. Keep in mind that entry fees are not included in the tour price, so budget accordingly. For many, Keukenhof is a breath of fresh floral beauty, but some find it a bit crowded, so timing your visit is key.

Volendam Haven

The tour then moves to Volendam, a charming fishing village with a picturesque harbor. You’ll have an hour to walk around, try fresh herring or smoked eel, and enjoy the lively waterfront atmosphere. It’s a favorite for travelers wanting to experience authentic Dutch seaside life, with comments like “The cheese tasting and clog making was fun.”

Marken

Finally, you’ll visit Marken, a former island famous for its traditional wooden houses and clog-making crafts. You can enjoy a brief walk, visit the clog factory, or check out the local museum. Since this stop is free to explore, it’s a relaxed way to soak in Dutch traditions.

Rudy gave us an excellent taste of the countryside in a day. Beautiful and relaxed. The best part was the windmill. Cheese tasting and clog making was fun. We enjoyed the small fishing village as well!
JoanaRizza B
What a treat it was having Rudy guide us around. Rudy didn't just take us to the expected spots. Beyond the beautiful Keukenhof gardens, he brought us to a lovely café nearby where we enjoyed proper apple pie and purchased flower bulbs at reasonable prices. The opportunity to take photos among actual flower fields, away from the crowds, was particularly special. In Katwoude, we watched traditional clog making and cheese production demonstrations. It was less touristy than the usual spots for these attractions. The souvenirs here were surprisingly affordable compared to most other tourist shops we have seen. Throughout the drive, Rudy shared fascinating insights about Holland’s history, en…

We had an almost 8 hour layover in Amsterdam and booked this 4 hour tour to see some of the city. We had also planned a visit to the Anne Frank House and the Heineken Experience for different people in our family and it was very easy to coordinate with the tour operator the week prior to our arrival. We just gave them a list of things we wanted to see and do and they fit it all in for us. Our driver, Singh was very friendly and helpful and had a great suggestion for breakfast. I wish we had more time in Amsterdam but this was a great way to experience a bit of the city if you only have a short amount of time.

What Travelers Say

Customizable private tour windmills, clogs & cheese and more.. - What Travelers Say

Feedback on this tour is generally very positive, with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 47 reviews. Many visitors praise their guides—like Guillermo and Rudy—calling them “outstanding,” “knowledgeable,” and “friendly.” One reviewer raved, “Our guide Rudy was absolutely wonderful. He was very accommodating and very pleasant,” highlighting how a personal guide can enrich the experience.

However, not all reviews are glowing. Some travelers have expressed frustration when the tour felt more like a driver-only experience rather than a guided tour with commentary. For example, one reviewer said, “This was listed as a private and customizable tour. And while it was private and customizable, there was no real tour or information,” emphasizing the importance of clarifying what’s included.

Plus, the price point—around $229 per person—might feel steep for those expecting a full-day guided experience. But considering private transport, custom planning, and the ability to focus on your interests, many find it offers good value compared to group tours.

Guillermo was excellent! He was very knowledgeable, spoke perfect English, and was an excellent driver. Highly recommended.
Samantha S
My family booked for a 1/2 tour around the outskirts of Amsterdam and it was a perfect tour! We stopped at three different locations: Windmills, Cheese tasting, and the harbor and it was so nice to see the countryside. Our tour guide was perfect, informative but not to lecturelike. We highly recommend!
TheWhitesinamecom
We loved learning about the windmills and how many different types of wood were necessary to build them. Our guide was so knowledgable and able to answer our questions plus he took some great pictures for us that captured memories we'll cherish forever.

However, if you’re expecting a deep dive into Dutch history or city-specific landmarks with guided commentary, you might find this more of a scenic drive with optional stops rather than a full guided tour. Also, if budget is a concern, keep in mind that extras like entry fees can add up.

I cannot say enough about this wonderful tour of Amsterdam. We were so happy Viator asked if we wanted to upgrade to a full day tour but we were even happier about our guide Gueillermo! He made the day even better! After safely getting us to the Anne Frank Museum, he then recommended the canal tour which was just outside the Museum! Beautiful day to be on the canal! He was very knowledgeable of the city and got around easily which made for a great tour. Can't say enough about how the guide makes the day….and Gueillermo made our week! We're still talking about him!
