5.0(58 reviews)From $90.51 per person

If you’re planning a trip to Barcelona and looking to escape the city’s hustle for a day, a small-group hike to Montserrat might just be the perfect choice. We’ve come across this tour that promises a mix of outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, and some delicious local treats, and it looks like a genuine winner.

What we particularly like about this experience is its focus on a personalized small-group setting, limited to just eight travelers, which tends to mean better interaction with your guide and a more tailored experience. Plus, hiking with provided trekking poles up scenic mountain trails sounds like a great way to combine activity with sightseeing.

However, it’s worth noting that this tour isn’t suited for those afraid of heights, with low fitness levels, or those with knee problems—an active nature means you’ll need to be comfortable with moderate exertion. It’s best for travelers who enjoy outdoor adventures, are curious about the scenery, and want a taste of local culture without the crowds.

Full Day Montserrat Tour
Stepan wad very friendly, knowledgeable and care for the seniors (6 of us). He gave us choice of what we would like to visit, guided and explained things in detail for us through out the tour. We hiked the Montserrat, visited the Basilica, visit the Black Madonna and listen to the boy's choirs. We also tasted cheese, honey and dried fruits in local farmer's market.

My sister and I had truly the best time with Stepan. The hike was invigorating and truly stunning. Stepan was such a great guide, he was very knowledgeable about the history of Monserrat, the wildlife, the Basillica, and he created a great atmosphere for my sister and I. He also provided the opportunities for us to try the local cheese, honey, fig bread, and make it just such an enjoyable trip. I cannot suggest doing this tour with Stepan enough!!

Wonderful day exploring nature in Monserrat
Amazing hike with Stephan. The first 1/2 of the hike was challenging with stairs and an 1100 ft elevation change. Our guide let us set the pace and stop to take pictures which we did a lot because the scenery is beautiful. Basilica and museum were amazing with no lines. Highly recommend.

Montserrat Day Trip (Hike and Explore)
Stephan was a wonderful guide! I didn't really know what to expect in Montserrat, and I was pleasantly surprised by the views, the hike, the goats (!) and the knowledge shared by Stephan! We closed the hike with a nice walk through the museum, church and the local vendors who shared samples of local cheese and honey. I was very happy with the day and as an active traveler who enjoys more intense hikes, I was pleasantly surprised that the hike had stairs and incline so it was a bit of a fun challenge that got our heart rate up (while also being totally manageable). Pack: Layers, water, some snacks (the hike was 3 hours) and enjoy. Stephan also gave us great tips for Costa Brava, too!

Not bad for a full-day tour packed with variety. You’ll also get bottled water and insurance, which adds a layer of peace of mind. The only thing not included is lunch, so plan to bring some snacks or buy something at the market or nearby.

The tour is operated by World Adventour, and you meet at Banc d’Espanya, Pl. de Catalunya, in Barcelona. Given the small group limit of just 8 travelers, it’s a chance to get more personalized commentary and ask plenty of questions.

The Itinerary: From Village to Mountain Top

The adventure begins at a quaint village at the foot of Montserrat, a perfect starting point for your ascent. The hike kicks off with a climb towards Saint Miquel’s Cross, your first viewpoint. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views that include the monastery, the Pyrenees, and the Mediterranean—photos here are bound to turn out beautifully, and you’ll want to take your time.

The trail passes by a tiny chapel, Saint Anna, surrounded by dense boxwood bushes. The guide will likely point out signs of local wildlife, including wild boar tracks—adding a touch of wilderness to your day. The initial stretch is described as challenging, with some stairs and an elevation change, but the scenery and fresh mountain air make it worthwhile.

The Monastery and Cultural Highlights

After the hike, you’ll visit the Montserrat Monastery, a spiritual and architectural highlight of the region. Entry to the basilica is included, giving you access to admire the impressive architecture and perhaps catch a glimpse of the famous Black Madonna. The monastery’s history, along with the flora and fauna of the area, are points your guide will probably highlight, adding context to your visit.

The visit to the farmers market at the monastery offers a chance to sample local cheeses, honey, and fig bread. Multiple reviews rave about the tastings, describing them as delicious and a lovely way to wrap up the cultural part of the tour. One reviewer mentions the honey and cheese as “a really nice treat,” which suggests the market is a genuine local experience rather than a tourist trap.

The Overall Experience

Many travelers highlight their guide, often named Stepan or Stephan, as a major plus. They’re praised for their knowledge, friendly attitude, and the ability to pace the hike appropriately for the group’s ability. One reviewer notes, “Stephan was awesome! Several reviews mention how scenic and rewarding the hike is, with some describing it as “beautiful, scenic,” and “a great workout.” The views of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean are often cited as spectacular, making the physical effort well worth it.

The combination of hiking, cultural visits, and local food sampling makes this tour well-rounded. The museum visit, which includes seeing artworks such as Picasso’s, is an added bonus for art lovers.
