Planning a trip to Greece often means dreaming of ancient ruins, stunning coastlines, and vibrant city life. But if you’re craving something a little different, a guided two-day trip to Meteora might just be the perfect escape.
This tour promises to take you beyond the usual tourist trail, offering a mix of breathtaking vistas, historic monasteries, and memorable experiences—all with the convenience of organized transport and expert guides.
What caught our eye about this experience? First, the combination of sunset and morning tours really lets you soak in Meteora’s incredible beauty at different times of day, making the views even more spectacular. And second, the well-reviewed guides seem to bring the history and stories of this UNESCO World Heritage site to life, adding depth to your visit.
I did the 2 day Meteora tour from Athens at the end of December. I had an amazing time. Meteora is a very special place, the tour was very well organised. Both guides and all drivers were excellent. Thank you to Vasilis the tour leader and Nikos the driver day 1. On Day 2 , the hiking led by Dimitris the mountain guide and Thodoris the driver. Both guides had great knowledge and love for their local area. Dimitris was very funny and really added to my experience. Thank you!!
Beautiful place, everything under scheduled, great tour guides, I liked the hotel room. Very pleasant experience.
The 2 day trip to Meteora was a wonderful tour. The guides were knowledgeable, friendly, punctual, and helpful. Visiting the monestaries was an amazing experience that I would highly recommend. We upgraded to the higher level hotel and it was well worth the money. If you are interested in visiting Meteora, this is the way to do it..
That said, one thing to consider is that this tour involves a fair amount of walking, steps, and some free time, which might not suit everyone, especially if you’re not keen on hikes or long excursions.
Still, if you’re looking for a well-organized way to explore Meteora without the hassle of planning every detail yourself, this could be a great fit—especially if you love engaging guides, photos-worthy vistas, and a mix of guided and independent exploration.
Whether you’re into history, nature, photography, or simply want to see one of Greece’s most awe-inspiring sights, this tour offers a solid balance of all. Let’s unpack what makes this two-day experience worth considering, and where it might fall short.

What the Tour Includes and How It Works
This two-day Meteora tour from Athens is designed to make seeing this incredible landscape straightforward and enjoyable.
The guides and bus drivers were really good but the wait from 1pm to 5:30 pm to get transfered back to Athens is just annoying especially because most hotels dont allow a late check out. One has to hang out in the village although there is nothing to do. That made the experience – unfortunately- less good. I dont know why they do not find a different solution even though all customers dont seem to like it.
Meteora is fantastic! An unreal landscape and a real lesson in Greek history. The monasteries were amazing.
Our both guides were great. Be ready to walk over 15K steps on first day and climb 28 floors on second day tour. Give yourself extra time In beginning of the trip, there was a confusing situation to find a right bus from the many parked buses, you have to check with each driver if you’re on their list. Also after being dropped off at the end of second day tour you have over 4 hours to kill until being picked up by the bus to return to Athens. I wish there was an option for early afternoon return.
For approximately $139.54 per person, you’re getting a package that covers round-trip bus travel, transfers from the train station and hotel, overnight accommodation at a 3 or 4-star hotel, and guided tours. Plus, a free smart audio guide in multiple languages to enhance your experience.
The tour departs early from Athens at 8:00 am, meeting at the central railway station. From there, you’ll hop onto a comfortable coach. The small group size—limited to 18 travelers—ensures a more personal experience, avoiding the chaos of large tour buses.

Day 1: Sunset Tour & Monastery Visits
Your first day is all about the iconic views and hidden gems. The highlight is the Meteora sunset tour, which combines visits to famous monasteries like Saint Stephen, a Byzantine church, and hermit caves with viewpoints great for photos. The sunset over Meteora’s rugged rock formations creates a magical scene, one that many reviews describe as unforgettable.
The tour continues with visits to less touristy spots like the Iera Moni Agiou Stefanou and the Byzantine Church of the Virgin Mary. These off-the-beaten-path stops are led by local guides who share stories and legends, turning sightseeing into a more engaging experience. One reviewer mentioned how the guides make the experience “life-changing,” highlighting the personal touch.
The excursion was amazing. Our tour guide Chris was incredibly knowledgeable and just outstanding. Our driver Yiannis was also wonderful, personable, and a very safe driver negotiating some tight spots. Best excursion I ever had. The people of Kalambaka were so nice. Our hotel staff was welcoming, kind, and patient. They put out a delicious breakfast for us.
beautiful location, definitely worth a visit. the only experience improvement I would make is : 1. to have a sign" viator bookings" by the bus in Larissis station – as there where a few busses to Meteora and people were confused which to take 2. adding timetable to itineraries – exact pick up times from hotels, drop off ,as people didn't know and were stressing out 3. wait for the bus to Athens on day 2 was way to long…from 1-6 pm in the afternoon heat ….hmmm
Meteora itself is absolutely stunning and 100% worth visiting — the scenery and monasteries are unforgettable. That said, the logistics of this particular tour were awkward and left a lot to be desired. The bus ride from Athens was advertised as 3.5 hours but ended up closer to 4.5 due to traffic (not their fault but if you're doing a day trip, this really cuts into your tour time). There was one 30-minute stop halfway, but it wasn’t really enough time to get food/do anything (most people just stood outside the bus). We later learned you could pre-order meals, but no one explained how or when to do that. Once in Meteora, those of us staying overnight had to transfer to a different bus to…
Because admission fees are not included, you’ll need cash for monastery entrances, which generally have modest fees. The focus here is on the vistas and stories rather than just ticking boxes. Expect about 4 hours of sightseeing on the first day, with plenty of opportunities to take photos or simply soak in the scenery.
Day 2: Monastery Hopping & Optional Hikes
The second day is designed to give you a deeper look at Meteora’s monasteries, including the Great Meteoron, Varlaam, and Roussanou. You can opt for a half-day bus tour or a more active hiking experience—the latter being a favorite among some travelers who want to venture into less crowded areas and enjoy different perspectives of the landscape.
One reviewer called the morning hike “amazing,” especially for the peaceful, less touristy scenes and the chance to see some hidden “gems.” The guides are praised for their knowledge and ability to balance information with free time for photos and quiet reflection.
Along With visiting monasteries, you’ll get a taste of local life in the town of Kalambaka, strolling through its streets, browsing shops, and sampling local cuisine. This helps round out the experience, making it more than just a sightseeing whirlwind.
Very informative guides. Very much enjoyed the tour. Would highly recommend the tour to friends and family
Super well organized. No stress trip. Meteora is the most stunning place! This tour gives you time in the town, a nice hotel and two amazing organized tours. They take care of everything for you!
We had booked the two day tour with an overnight at the Grand Meteora. The hotel view was gorgeous with a balcony overlooking the rocks of Meteora. There was a pool and sauna; however, we didn’t use them due to limited hours and additional costs. The tours themself were great, including the sunset viewing. Seeing the largest Monastery was the highlight. Only problem was after spending half-day of second day on a four we were dropped off mid-day at the office. Explored the town for several hours, but 3/4 were closed due to custom of an afternoon rest which you can appreciate given the heat. If I were to do it again, recommend going back to the hotel to spend the afternoon at the pool wi…
The Hotels & Comfort
The included hotel stay is generally rated 3-star or 4-star, with reviews praising the cleanliness and comfortable beds. Some travelers note that the hotel décor isn’t overly fancy or modern, but that the rooms are functional for a short overnight stay.
One reviewer mentioned that the hotel’s breakfast was served on “multi-tier bookshelves,” which sounds quirky but also a bit odd, and some found the breakfast temperature-appropriate, though a few expressed dissatisfaction with the food safety standards.
Transportation & Group Size
The bus transfer runs smoothly, with punctual pickups and drop-offs, and the small group size (max 18) makes for a more intimate experience. Reviews highlight that the transport is comfortable and well-organized, which is a significant plus when dealing with long travel days.

Authentic Experiences from Travelers

Multiple reviews love the guides, mentioning their knowledgeability, friendliness, and ability to share stories that bring Meteora’s history to life. One reviewer said, “Vassily was a terrific guide! He knew his history, took photos, and had a great sense of humor,” which suggests guides are not just informative but also personable.
This is a wonderful tour of Meteora. The transport up was smooth and easy with a stop in a beautiful seaside town. The two local tours were perfect. The guides and drivers were so informative, friendly and made for a great experience. The only downfall is that you checking out on Day 2 at 8.30am and are dropped back in town at 1.30pm with 4 hours with nothing to do. We ended up renting a hotel room to get out of the heat. The transfer back should leave at 3.30pm after a break for lunch. Other than this is was a great tour.
Exceptional. We had amazing tour guides and bus drivers. They gave us interesting stories and information. Your pictures will never capture the beautiful area of history and massiveness, but you will take a zillion photos. Going inside the monestaries was so educational and enlightening. We had a mishap leaving a travel bag behind that we needed to get travel home. The bus driver connected us immediately to Visit Meteora travel and they will have it on a bus tonight. We are so thankful with their ease, confidence and caring nature. Our tour guides were so personable taking pictures of us. They even had water on board after the many stairs. Recommend with 20 stars. Our hotel they line…
Just finished up this 2 day tour to Meteora and wanted to share some insights. The tour guides Dimitrius (for the 1st 1/2 day sunset portion) and Chris (for the hike 2nd 1/2 day) were phenomenal!! So much knowledge they shared with us – more than we ever expected. The rock formations in Meteora are a spectacular view and the Monasteries were quite unique. The parts of the tour that we wish we had known ahead of time: the town of Kalabaka does not have much to do. We were there on Sunday for the 1st day and once you arrive at your hotel you have about 3+ hours before you get picked up for the sunset portion of the tour. Most businesses were closed in the afternoon so very little shopping an…
The scenery often earns high praise. One traveler called it a “magnificent” site, emphasizing the awe-inspiring vistas that stretch across the landscape. Several mention how the sunset tour offers especially stunning views, bathing the monasteries and rocks in golden light—great for photography lovers.
And while most are very satisfied with the value for money, some note minor inconveniences—like the lack of detailed communication about pickup times or the hotel’s decor—but these seem to be minor compared to the overall positive experience.
The Downsides and Considerations

No trip is perfect, and this experience has some points to keep in mind. First, the itinerary includes free time at the hotel and during the day, which might feel unstructured for travelers who prefer a full guided day without breaks. If you dislike long walks or steps, be prepared for some physical activity, especially on the hikes and monastery visits.
A couple of reviews mention hotels that don’t meet expectations—serving breakfast on odd surfaces or feeling a bit “strange,” so manage expectations accordingly. Also, entrance fees are not included, so bring cash for monastery tickets.
Weather can impact your experience—rain or insects during the outdoor parts can be a bummer, but that’s out of the tour’s control. It’s worth checking the forecast and dressing appropriately, especially if you plan on hiking.
Who Is This Tour Best For?

It suits those who value expert guides that make the history lively and appreciate stunning views at different times of day. It's perfect if you enjoy a mix of guided visits and free time, and if you’re open to some walking and steps.
If you’re traveling solo, this tour offers a good chance to meet like-minded people in a small group. If you love photography, you’ll find plenty of opportunities, especially during sunset. However, if you prefer more relaxed, less physically demanding tours or have specific hotel expectations, you might want to explore other options or private tours.
