5.0(71 reviews)From $79.20 per person

If you’re considering a visit to the ancient city of Ephesus while in Kusadasi, this private, comprehensive tour might just be what you need. While we haven’t done it ourselves, the reviews and details suggest it’s a fantastic way to really absorb the site’s history and architecture without feeling rushed.

What caught our eye? First, the personalized nature of the tour, which means your guide can tailor the experience to your interests — a big plus if you’re a history buff or just curious about Roman engineering. Second, the inclusion of a full Turkish lunch, giving you a taste of local flavors amidst exploring ruins.

That said, a potential snag is the cost — at $99 per person, it’s a fair investment, but you need to consider the entrance fees not included in the price, which could add up. Plus, with so many sites to see, you’ll want to be prepared for some walking and stairs. This tour is best suited for those who want a deep, flexible exploration of Ephesus and are comfortable with a full day of sightseeing.

We had a great time on our tour to Ephesus and our guide, Selin was amazing and incredibly knowledgeable.

Our guide Selin was fantastic. One of the best tour guides we’ve ever had. The history is overwhelming and Selin really makes it special and answered our many questions. She happily adjusted the itinerary to accommodate our interests and needs. The shopping experience was interesting but we felt a little pressure by the shop employees as they hover and nag you a bit. But they are polite in the end. Highly recommend

Our tour guide Nesli was excellent! She was very knowledgeable about all of the places we visited on our private tour. If you should get a chance to request a particular tour guide, I would highly recommend Nesli!

If you’re after a tailored experience with a guide, enjoy historical sites, and appreciate local cuisine, this might be exactly the tour for you. It’s especially appealing if you’re interested in the lesser-visited areas like the Terrace Houses and the Ephesus Museum, alongside the major attractions.

We had a wonderful day on the small group tour that actually was more like a private tour with my family. Our guide Mehmet was very nice and knowledgeable. Our driver was definitely a safe driver and we felt safe at all times even on the later part of our tour when the Gods decided to open the heavenly water gates. The entrance fees were not included, however our guide had already purchased the entry tickets. Hence, we did not have to make any queues and at the end of our tour we settled the fees. The lunch was good and plentiful. Our guide bought local figs for us to try and as we exited the ancient city, we drank fresh squeezed pomegranate juice. All in all a great tour for all the senses…

A Thorough Breakdown of the Itinerary

NEW: Private The Most Detailed Ephesus Shore Excursion / with Lunch - A Thorough Breakdown of the Itinerary

Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House)

Your day kicks off with a visit to the House of Virgin Mary, a site of religious significance. While admission isn’t included, it’s a meaningful stop that many find quietly moving. Expect about 30 minutes here, giving you time to soak in the atmosphere and perhaps light a candle.

Exploring Ancient Ephesus

Next, your guide will take you into the ancient city itself, covering iconic spots like Harbour Street, the theatre, the Marble Street, and the Celcius Library. The wide array of ruins paints a picture of bustling Roman life, from commercial areas to religious temples.

The review mentions that the guide makes a point to explore topics that most tours skip—like Roman engineering, architecture, and daily life. Expect around two hours here, with the guide offering insights that you won’t get just wandering around on your own.

State Agora and the Roman Infrastructure

A brief stop at the State Agora reveals how Ephesus functioned as a center of governance. The excavations have uncovered graves from as early as the 7th century B.C, which makes this an intriguing look at the city’s long history.

Our guide was Asli who was very knowledgeable and made our day very memorable! The tour to Ephesus was informative and we felt like a friend was showing us around! The lunch was very good, followed by a rug making factory tour. After showing us how the rugs are made (lot of time/detailed work), They started rolling out a lot of rugs to show us and try and sell. We weren't really looking to buy and there was an interesting balance of pressure/no pressure. They are very proud of what they do (understandably) and a lot goes into each one, but they are not cheap. You can tell they would like to sell harder but are aware of not leaving a bad impression on the tour. I would definitely recommend …

Devon- where to start!? Brilliant. Thoughtful. Interesting. Knowledgeable. Everything from pick up to lunch was individualized and special. He was so familiar with the landscape and provided an excellent tour of Mary’s home and the ruins. It was an exceptional day. He’s amazing!
Warryn H
My guide Özgür (Oscar) made this an unforgettable experience! Incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, he personalized the tour perfectly to match my interests. Ephesus was awe inspiring, and visiting the Terrace houses was worth the stairs (so many stairs). Lunch was delicious, and I’m still thinking about the olive oil and pomegranate juice salad dressing. Definitely ask for Özgür!

You’ll also see the Pollio Aqueduct remains, which demonstrate Roman ingenuity in bringing water to the city—something our reviewers appreciated as a glimpse into everyday Roman engineering.

The Odeion and Temples

The Odeion, a concert hall with seating for 1,500, is fascinating both architecturally and historically. Originally used for meetings and performances, it’s a compact but significant piece of Ephesus’ cultural fabric.

Nearby, the Temple of Domitian and the Temple of Hadrian showcase Roman religious architecture. The latter, built before 138 A.D., is noted for its well-preserved Corinthian columns and inscriptions, offering a tangible connection to the past.

The Terrace Houses

Perched on a hillside, the Terrace Houses give a rare look into Roman family life. These well-preserved residences, with mosaics and frescoes, reveal how wealthier Romans lived. Many reviewers highlight the value of this stop, as it’s often not included in standard tours.

This is the best Viator tour we have ever had! Nesli was knowledgeable beyond measure and such fun to be with.
Leslie S
The tour was great but the guide must have lost track of time so, we were very late returning to the SHIP! Fortunately, Norwegian Cruise lines was gracious enough to delay sail time for 30 minutes so we would not have to find our way from Izmir to Instanbul on our own buy we did get a big ovation from other passengers as we boarded the ship!
Ragen C
Ali was amazing very informative. Could have done without the rug sales pitch. Neat to learn about the rugs and how they are made though.

The Library of Celsus

One of Ephesus’ most photographed sites, the Celsus Library is a true highlight. Built in 117 A.D., it once held over 12,000 scrolls. The guide’s storytelling here brings the ruins to life, making it more than just a photo-op.

The Great Theatre and Artemis Temple

The Greek theatre, seating 25,000, is impressive both in size and acoustics. Many visitors find it the most majestic structure in Ephesus.

While the Temple of Artemis is mostly ruins today, its historical significance as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World makes it a must-see. Some of its sculpture fragments are housed in the British Museum, adding to its mystique.

Saint John’s Basilica

Finally, the tour concludes with the Basilica of Saint John, believed to be the final resting place of John the Evangelist. The site’s religious significance is palpable, and it offers a reflective end to your day.

Potential Drawbacks and Considerations

NEW: Private The Most Detailed Ephesus Shore Excursion / with Lunch - Potential Drawbacks and Considerations

The main concern for some travelers might be the extra entrance fees, which aren’t included in the $99 price. Depending on which sites you choose to visit, this could add up. It’s worth budgeting around $200 for full access, as some reviews have pointed out.

Also, this is a full-day tour with quite a bit of walking and stairs, so it’s not ideal for those with mobility issues. The tour length of 5-7 hours requires stamina and moderate physical fitness.

Lastly, some travelers reported timing issues—if the guide loses track of time, you might find yourself rushing or late. However, most reviews mention that the guide's expertise and the overall experience outweigh this minor concern.
