If you’re considering a trip into the famous Samaria Gorge while in Crete, this tour from Chania offers a chance to combine hiking, sightseeing, and even some swimming—all with the help of a professional guide. As someone who’s seen many such experiences, I can tell you this one stands out for its stunning scenery and well-organized logistics.

We really appreciate how the tour handles the transportation and timing, making it a hassle-free way to see one of Greece’s most impressive natural sites. On the flip side, the long duration and physical demands mean it’s best suited for those in good shape or avid hikers. Still, if you’re up for a challenge and want to experience Crete’s wild beauty, this could be a highlight of your trip.

It’s also worth noting that this tour isn’t for everyone—particularly those with knee problems, high blood pressure, or a fear of heights. But if you’re a reasonably fit traveler craving an authentic outdoor adventure, this trip offers plenty of value for not a huge price.

This hike was amazing. We ended up going with a very large group, however, went at our own pace. Highly recommend Hiking shoes. Bring snacks. Water fills along the way. Multiple checkpoints and if you finish early enough, time for a meal and swim at the end before boarding the ferry. Our calves are sore today. Its just about all downhill, so can be tough on the knees. It was beautiful and SO glad we did it. Recommend doing it towards the end of your stay in Crete due to muscle soreness and just being tired. Its a 10 mile/15 km hike with little flat. Enjoy!

Incredible experience but hard. The scenery and terrain is spectacular it don’t underestimate the length and the focus it takes. Wear good hiking shoes and it will be a worthwhile experience.

Great guide, great nature, a bit crowded due to rain closures for several days before. Sylvia with Kyriakakis was a great guide, who did a great job of explaining the long journey from mountain to sea. I wish I would have know they rent hiking poles – what a knee saver! Recommendations: rent hiking poles, eat breakfast at the taverna on the way (but move fast), bring swim suit for the hours between finish of hike and ferry, and bring some Euros of beers at Agios Roumeli. Also, schedule a massage for the day after your hike. Have fun!
  • Well-organized logistics make the day smooth, with hotel pickup and coordinated transfers.
  • Spectacular views of the White Mountains and the Libyan Sea are guaranteed highlights.
  • Expert guide support helps make the hike safer and more enjoyable.
  • The long hike requires good physical fitness and proper footwear.
  • Cost-effective considering transport, guide, and boat ride included.
  • Not suitable for those with certain health conditions or limited mobility.

Starting Out: Convenient Pickup and Omalos Plateau Views

Samaria Gorge Hiking from Chania with proffesional hiking guide - Starting Out: Convenient Pickup and Omalos Plateau Views

The tour kicks off early morning, with pickup from select spots around Chania in a luxurious air-conditioned bus. We loved how smooth the process was—no need to worry about navigating on your own.

Once you arrive at Omalos Plateau, you’ll be greeted with panoramic views that immediately set the tone for the day. This is a camera-worthy spot, so be prepared to snap some photos and maybe enjoy a quick breakfast if you brought one.

The high vantage point gives you a glimpse of the rugged terrain and the White Mountains, making it clear this day will be an outdoor adventure.

Transitioning to Sougia and the Boat Ride

After soaking in the views, the tour continues with a trip to the traditional village of Sougia. Here, you’ll hop onto a boat that sails along Crete’s coast, offering a relaxing break and some stunning seaside scenery.

For context we are 70&68 year old hikers with 50yrs of hiking experience. This is what we observed. Hiker ability: we saw all levels from what appeared to be seasoned to weekend & occasional hikers. Equipment: well equipped with daypacks (smart) to simple carry on style bags, sandals (only 2), light trail boots (good idea), trail running shoes, and common everyday street/running shoes. Poles only a few came with them lots rented on the advice of the guide (smart). TRAIL: The trail is all downhill so don’t think it will be easy. This adds a whole different dimension to hiking if you’re not use to it. The first section is a bit steep, and covered in flat rocks that make it more challengin…

It was hard but good – left me feeling very satisfied . I hiked 16 kms and it was an eye opener. I loved this hike and hated it all at the same time!!!! Crazy – if you need a reality check this trip is for you

The boat ride is a real highlight for many, as it provides a different perspective of the island’s beautiful coastline. Expect to see the Libyan Sea stretching out as you glide past small coves and rugged cliffs.

Entering the Samaria Gorge

Samaria Gorge Hiking from Chania with proffesional hiking guide - Entering the Samaria Gorge

Arriving at the gorge’s entrance, called Xyloskalo, around 7 a.m., you’ll be ready to start hiking. This part is the most iconic segment—the longest and most imposing ravine in the Mediterranean. The hike is officially 16.5 kilometers long but will vary depending on your pace. We were struck by how the terrain varies—some parts are gentle, while others are rocky and demanding.

The first stretch involves descending 600 wooden steps, which can be quite tiring but also offer amazing views of the gorge’s towering walls. The narrow “Iron Gates” is a narrow crossing that feels almost dramatic—your guide will explain its significance and history. Along the way, you’ll pass by St. Nicolas church, built on ancient ruins, adding a touch of historical intrigue to the hike.

Authentic Experiences Along the Route

One of the reviews mentions how the guide’s attentiveness really enhances the experience. This is especially helpful considering the rugged terrain—having someone who knows the area and can offer support makes a difference. The gorge’s serene surroundings are breathtaking, with towering white cliffs and the shadows of the White Mountains creating an almost surreal atmosphere.

The bus ride home was terrible! We both got car sick, the driver was taking turn uncomfortably fast. The hike was EPIC!! Glad we did it

Amazing and challenging hike. As advertised. Amazing views and stunning scenery. The whole thing was well-organized. Prompt bus pickup at my hotel at 6am, and safe transportation to the start and from the ferry drop off. Amazing guide. You are at the whim Of the ferry schedule to start the return so it is a full day (back to my hotel at 9:00pm). Not for the feint of heart. The first 4km is a steep downward hike – stone stairs, uneven and rocky footing. The descent was less steep for the rest. But you need to maintain focus for footing.

Very well organized and professional staff. Great communication. This is me and I think I am in pretty good shape for my late 70’s. I had trained before hand but was not prepared for the difficult of the decent into the gorge. The views are spectacular but the rocks are slippery. A decision was made not to continue after reaching the stream. I can’t say enough good things about the tour company and the support staff and crew of the Samaria Gorge park. I felt safe and protected and secure at all times. I tried. My legs just wouldn’t cooperate this year. But Go for it.

Reaching Agia Roumeli and Its Beach

Samaria Gorge Hiking from Chania with proffesional hiking guide - Reaching Agia Roumeli and Its Beach

The hike ends at Agia Roumeli, a charming village and one of Greece’s most beautiful beaches. This is the perfect spot to unwind after the long trek. The beach is surrounded by mountains, and the clear waters invite you for a swim. Bring your swimsuit and beach towel—you’ll likely want a splash in the sea.

A common theme in reviews praise the scenery and overall experience, with many mentioning how the views are worth every step.

One reviewer said, “The scenery was amazing and the hike wasn’t as difficult as some reviews make out,” highlighting that with proper pacing, most people can enjoy it. But others warn that the trail is rocky and challenging, especially for those who aren’t in good physical condition.

Duration and Pace

Samaria Gorge Hiking from Chania with proffesional hiking guide - Duration and Pace

The entire day lasts about 14 hours—from pickup at your hotel through the boat ride, the hike, and return. This might seem long, but the long duration is part of what makes it special. You’re immersed in the landscape, with ample time for photos, breaks, and enjoying the scenery.

Long day but perfect excursion experience! Started with pick up at 6 am and returned at 9pm. Everything about meet point, stops, and the day was clearly laid out an announced on the bus ride to the national park. The hike was beautiful a lot of decent and rocky so recommend decent hiking shoes. After the exit of the hiking portion there is a road that brings you to a small town and beach area. The water is very clear and perfect after a long hike. Definitely recommended packing bathing suit, towel, any change of clothes/shoes you can carry for that to be able to enjoy it comfortably. Food available at restaurants at the end of hike to purchase but you may want to pack a few snacks. 1-2 water…

We had a wonderful time. The guide provided very accurate and thorough information to make sure no one was attempting an activity they should not be. It is strenuous, even though downhill because of the heat. But it is worth it! Scenery unlike any we’ve experienced elsewhere. Multi places along the way for restrooms and water. Restroom facilities are about what one would expect in the middle of the wilderness, but at least they exist. Swim and restaurants at the finish of the hike were welcomed and refreshing!

Samaria Gorge is a breathtaking experience for everyone, though it is physically demanding. Our guide, Nicos, was helpful and informative.

While some reviews mention the hike as arduous, many find it manageable with proper footwear and pacing. Several hikers praised the guides’ support, noting how they kept everyone motivated and safe. If you’re concerned about the physical challenge, renting hiking poles and wearing sturdy shoes (trail runners or good sneakers) can make a big difference.

What a tour! Woke up at 5 am and returned at 9 pm, but we knew what we signed up for. Lovely guide who made sure that everyone was satisfied and knew all the required information to get to the bus safely (and on time). Even though we were the first to get picked up and the last to be dropped off, Nico (tour guide) chatted with us to make sure that we were okay with the long bus ride and the definitely long day! A-maze-ing day with lots of great memories.
Laurie M
Great experience from start to finish! It was a unique opportunity to see another part of the island and combine hiking and the beach. Ingrid, the guide, is a wealth of information and delivers it with personability and humor.
Anna F
It’s one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited! Amazing hike and rewarding beach at the end!

This adventure is best suited for active travelers with a good level of fitness. The rocky terrain and long distance mean it’s not suitable for everyone—those with knee problems, high blood pressure, or a fear of heights might want to think carefully. The tour is also quite demanding in hot weather, so hydration and sun protection are essential.

We also recommend bringing snacks and water—the review mentions that snacks are appreciated, especially towards the end when fatigue sets in. If you’re not an experienced hiker, be prepared with sturdy shoes and possibly hiking poles. The guide is very attentive, making this a safer option for those who want to push their limits with some support.
