If you’re planning to visit Sintra, exploring the Castle of the Moors is likely on your list. We haven’t personally done this tour, but based on reviews and descriptions, it offers a straightforward way to experience one of Sintra’s most striking landmarks without the long waits and with plenty of information to enrich your visit.
What we really like about this experience is the convenience of skip-the-line access—no wasting precious sightseeing time waiting for tickets—and the self-guided audio tour that brings the castle’s history and secrets to life through your phone.
On the flip side, a potential consideration is that this is a self-guided experience, so if you’re someone who thrives on guided groups or prefers in-person storytelling, you might find it lacking a bit of the personal touch.
very hard long walk up many many steep steps but worth the climb, great view from the battlements, perhaps could have done with some post cards and refreshments the top
This was an amazing spot. Lots of stairs to climb. But well worth it!!!!
Nothing here but the ruins of the castle and fantastic views. Lots of history information provided. Difficult walk up to the castle. Very uneven stones to walk on around the castle so wear good shoes. No toilets or water available once inside the castle.
This tour seems best suited for travelers who enjoy exploring at their own pace, appreciate a bit of historical context, and want a budget-friendly way to see the castle’s highlights. If you’re comfortable with a bit of a hike and are looking for flexibility, it could be a great fit.

worth the hike, best to get a tuk tuk or bus up to the entrance as it's very challenging from there on to the top. can be windy and very cool too even in May
We did the tour on our own and enjoyed it without audio as it is too dangerous to be distracted with your phone. It is an amazing place that takes you back. I’m 62 back and neck issues . I was able to do the stairs and walks slowly and carefully. The wind was really blowing and felt at times worth hanging on. It is not for the meak or children or older people with any balance issues. I was worn out after but worth it. Good walking shoes hat that won’t fly away, no dresses . No food or drink around you may want a snack or water. Highly recommend
stunning castle and well worth a visit. would reccomend using the hop on hop off bus though as its very steep to walk up to.
Timing & Opening Hours
The castle typically opens from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the last entry at 5:00 PM. It’s worth noting that the seasonal hours can vary slightly, and the castle closes on certain days like December 24-25 and January 1.

The Walk & Terrain
Many reviews mention that the walk up to the castle can be steep and uneven. The stones can be slippery, so sturdy shoes are a must. What to Expect During Your Visit

When you step inside the Moorish Castle, you’re basically traveling back in time. The fortified walls and towers offer a glimpse of medieval military architecture. As you walk along the ramparts, you’ll be treated to panoramic views over Sintra’s hills and the surrounding landscape, which many reviewers say are breathtaking.
Fabulous. We did not use the audio guide, but simply walked the full length of the castle. It was truly my favorite attraction in Sintra! Amazing. A bit of a workout for someone who is 69, but so worth it! The views were amazing. The magnitude of the remaining structures were fantastic.
Tickets & audio guide details came through quite late on the evening before, but ultimately all worked fine & trip was great. Thanks
Loved this place! Such great views from there Very recommended!
The audio guide will tell you the stories behind each part of the castle—how it was built, its strategic importance, and some lesser-known anecdotes. When I read reviews, I saw people appreciating the depth of information provided, making the somewhat rugged walk more engaging.
Highlights of the Castle
- The Royal Tower: A standout feature with a commanding view over the hills.
- The Second Circle of Walls: Offers a chance to walk around the castle’s perimeter and enjoy the scenery.
- Ancient Ruins & Gates: Each corner holds stories of past sieges and strategic defenses.
- The Dense Forest Surroundings: The walk up through lush greenery adds to the sense of adventure.
Authentic Experiences & Challenges
One reviewer shared that the walk can be physically demanding, especially in windy or cool weather. If you have mobility issues or balance concerns, the uneven paths and stairs might be tough. Another mentioned that it’s not suitable for children or older people with health issues, so plan accordingly.
Some visitors enjoyed doing the tour without the audio, simply wandering freely and soaking in the views, while others appreciated the storytelling aspect of the guide.
The Real Value of the Experience

At around $21, the price is quite reasonable for a skip-the-line ticket + audio guide—especially if you value the flexibility of exploring independently. Considering the crowds often seen at popular sites, avoiding queues can save a lot of time, giving you more moments to enjoy the scenery and take photos.
An amazing and interesting attraction. Enjoyed listening to the audio guide.
The audio guide was nice as I prefer listening vs reading the plaques along the route. Be prepared for a lot of stair climbing
Great communication and ticket delivery from supplier. Beautiful castle and grounds and you can see Lisbon and the bridge from a distance. We did this tour same day in between Pena Palace and Quinta d.Reg. gardens.
Many reviewers highlighted that the audio guide was well thought out, providing interesting facts and stories that enhanced their understanding of what they were seeing. The ability to use the guide multiple times is a bonus if you want to revisit parts of your visit later on.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that this experience is not guided by a live person — so if you prefer personal interaction or a detailed guided tour, this might not be your ideal choice.
Who Is This Tour Best For?

This tour is great for independent travelers who like exploring at their own pace and enjoy listening to stories as they go. It’s ideal if you’re comfortable with walking on uneven terrain and don’t mind a bit of a hike.
It’s especially good for those on a budget, looking to visit a major attraction without the hassle of long lines or group tours. If you’re traveling without children or mobility issues, you’ll find this experience manageable, though some may find the walk challenging.
I liked the ease of receiving our tickets. I failed to find the download at midnight and texted the customer service. He was back in less than 5 minutes and resent the info without question. I have nothing to add to your services.
I am super grateful for discovering this App whilst planning our day. We were disorganised and having everything so clear, easy and efficient was a relief. The booking was quick and the communication so prompt and professional. We literally skipped the queue at Moorish Castle and had the audio tour as well! The audio tour is really interesting and I learned a lot which was a terrific bonus! 🏰
Other than the weather it was great, lots to see, I'm sure the views would have been fantastic, except the weather prevented that. it was foggy and it added a whole new dynamic to the visit which was very enjoyable. Don't let the weather hamper your visit.
