Exploring Sintra: A Detailed Look at the Full-Day Private Tour & Pena Palace Entry
If you’re planning a trip to Portugal and dreaming of fairy-tale castles and lush landscapes, a full-day private tour of Sintra might be just the thing. This experience promises an intimate, personalized way to explore some of the region’s most iconic sights, from palaces to coastal cliffs, all with the comfort of a private guide and transportation.
What really draws us to this kind of tour are two key aspects: the flexibility to customize your visit—choosing what interests you most—and the quality of a personal guide, who brings history and stories alive. Plus, the option to include skip-the-line entry to Pena Palace means you avoid long waits and get more time to soak it all in.
Susana was knowledgeable and friendly. We enjoyed the day spent with her and learned a lot about Portuguese history. Would recommend!
Our guide, José Marques (Swingo Tours), was excellent. Very knowledgeable, had lots of interesting facts and made the tour entertaining. Glad we booked the private tour, the schedule was customizable and we were able to maneuver around the sights and large crowds much easier. So kind, patient and excellent service!
The private tour of Sintra and the Pena Palace was exceptional. Our guide, Sandro, was knowledgeable, engaging, and totally focused on giving us the very best experience possible. We were picked up at our hotel in the morning and spent a lovely day touring the sites in Sintra – the National Palace of Queluz, the Convent of the Capuchos, lunch in Sintra, and finally the Pena Palace. Sandro’s detailed knowledge of the history of each site made the day meaningful and fun.
However, a potential downside is that the tour lasts around 8 hours, so it’s a full day on your feet, which might be tiring if you’re not used to a lot of walking or if you’re traveling with very young children or those with mobility concerns. Still, if you’re eager to see Sintra’s highlights without the hassle of navigating on your own, this tour could be a great fit.
This experience is best suited for visitors who want a comprehensive, well-organized day with a guide and are comfortable with a fairly packed itinerary. Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of castles, or just want to enjoy Portugal’s scenic coast, this tour offers a balanced mix of culture, nature, and leisure.

The Itinerary Breakdown
Starting with hotel pickup in Lisbon, Cascais, or Sintra, the tour sets out on a well-planned route through some of Portugal’s most enchanting spots. The first highlight is, of course, Pena Palace, often called Sintra’s crown jewel. With an option to include skip-the-line tickets, you won’t spend precious time waiting in queues.
Your guide will take you through this romantic, colorful palace perched atop a hill, where you’ll get sweeping views and learn about its fascinating history.
Alberto was the best! He went above and beyond and turned our day into an adventure! Thanks Alberto and we will see you when we come back !!!
Excellent guide, Susana, thank you very much. Was had an amazing day visiting Sintra
We could not fault the tour , Miguel was one of the best tour guides we have met. Miguel is very knowledgeable and passionate about the area of Sintra that we visited , we learnt so much and had fun on the way, also very thoughtful , so that it was not a rushed experience I would highly recommend this trip 6 very happy visitors to the beautiful area of Sintra Wendy & James
Following Pena Palace, your guide will lead you through Sintra’s charming streets. They’ll point out the best places for local treats like Travesseiro — a delicious pastry loved in the area — and recommend spots for photos. We appreciate the way guides often share stories of Portuguese kings, queens, and legends that give life to the sights beyond just the visuals.
Next, you’ll select two out of five possible attractions to visit: Quinta da Regaleira, Monserrate Palace, Sintra National Palace, Moorish Castle, or Queluz Palace. Each offers something unique:
- Quinta da Regaleira is a fantasyland filled with mystical gardens, secret tunnels, and a castle that sparks imagination.
- Monserrate Palace combines exotic architecture with lush gardens, great for nature lovers.
- Sintra National Palace offers a glimpse into royal history with its striking chimneys and historic rooms.
- Moorish Castle provides panoramic views from ancient ramparts, adding a touch of medieval flair.
- Queluz Palace is a grand baroque palace with beautiful gardens—great for architecture fans.
After the cultural and historic stops, the tour takes you to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. Here, the sea crashes against rugged cliffs — a stunning spot for photos and reflection on nature’s power.
Finally, the day concludes with a visit to Cascais, a lively coastal town where you can enjoy ocean views, walk along the promenade, or simply relax after a busy day.
ANA GREETED US AND OUR TWO AUSTRALIAN FRIENDS AT OUR HOTEL. IT WAS AN ALL DAY TOUR TO SINTRA WHICH WAS ON 14TH SEPTEMBER ON A SUNDAY. ANA WAS PROFESSIONAL IMPARTING ALL THE HISTORIC DETAILS IN A FRIENDLY AND PLEASANT WAY WITH A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOUR.
What a fantastic day with Paulo! We learned a lot about Sintra, Cascais, and Portugal. Paulo helped us navigate what would have be a tough trip to do on our own and gave us plenty of time to enjoy every stop on the journey. He showed us shortcuts and helped us avoid crowds while seeing Sintra's highlights. You cannot go wrong with a personal tour to Sintra from Lisbon. Stress-free, educational, and amazing.
We enjoyed our day in Sintra and Cascais. José was a great tour guide, was very knowledgeable about the place, even telling stories of his personal connections to Sintra. It was a totally different experience compared to tours we’ve had in the past where they just recite the history from memory. Highly recommended!
What Travelers Say About This Tour
Reviews highlight the expertise and friendliness of the guides, like Miguel, Ronaldo, Diogo, and others. Multiple travelers praise guides for their knowledge, ease, and willingness to customize the day to fit individual interests. As one reviewer put it, “Miguel knew so much about every place and made the day enjoyable and tailored to what we liked,” which is exactly what you want in a private tour.
The transportation in an electric vehicle is another frequently mentioned plus — quiet, smooth, and eco-friendly. Travelers also appreciate the hotel pickup and drop-off, saving the hassle of figuring out logistics, especially if you’re staying in Lisbon or Cascais.
The cost of around $171 per person is often seen as reasonable, considering this covers private transport, guide, and entry tickets (if you opt for Pena Palace). Many reviews mention that, for the price, they received excellent value, especially with guides going above and beyond to ensure a memorable day.
Practical Considerations
Keep in mind that the tour length is approximately 8 hours. This means a lot of walking, some uphill climbs, and a busy schedule. If you’re not used to extensive walking or traveling with younger children, it’s worth considering how your group will handle the day. Also, the tour is not suited for pregnant women or wheelchair users, which is good to know upfront.
Alberto was an amazing guide, he helped us get the most out of our day in Sintra! He showed us a few lesser known spots, helped us navigate the ticket process, and gave us great recommendations for lunch in the city. And he was kind enough to stop in Cascais to let us get gelato! Incredible day!
Jose is a lovely tour guide. He was really good about anticipating our needs and wonderful about showing us amazing places and telling us the history behind them. The tour around Quinta da regalaria was super incredible and fascinating. We also toured the Peña Palace, which was also cool. The places would not have been as special had it not been for Jose‘s incredible stories. Also, he brought us to the best pastry place the world! Thank-you, Jose.
Excellent day with our guide Diogo. There were impromptu changes to our itinerary due to the Pena Palace and some other monuments being closed due to high wildfire risk, but we still had a really enjoyable day with our excellent guide. It was a pleasure to meet him and highly recommend both him and the private tour.
Bring comfortable shoes, sunglasses, and sun protection — Portugal’s sun can be strong, especially when exploring outdoor sites like Cabo da Roca. The inclusion of WiFi onboard is handy for sharing photos or staying connected during the day.

We had Paolo as our guide, and he was amazing!! Told so much about the places we visited and answered our other Portugal themes questions. We went with our own pace in the heat and he recommended the best local lunch spot. Would recommend him and the tour definitely!!
