We had a wonderful day with our amazing and awesome guide, Daniele. He was extremely knowledgeable and informative and personable. He shared bits of history and interesting facts about the area. His knowledge of wine and it’s production is impressive. He’s a true connoisseur of great wine. A little bit of a long day but worth every minute. We returned to our meeting point at about 6:15pm. I highly recommend this trip!
Guiliana is an expert guide, making our trip so interesting. She is an absolute rock star! She knew so much history about the area and answered any questions we had. The views through the winding roads on our trip to Pienza and Montepulciano were spectacular. After stopping for a cappuccino in a little town along the way, we were able to explore Pienza. It rained during our time there, but we made the best of it by having a delicious lunch at a nearby cheese farm, Podere Il Casale. We were served various cheeses to try from mild to very strong, salad, and a pasta dish. Perfect. We also learned about the differences of olive oil. With our bellies full, we headed to wine tasting at the …
Claudia was amazing. Terrific day; so informative and fun. She was personable and well versed in history and wine.
That said, a potential consideration is the full itinerary—it’s packed, and for anyone who prefers a leisurely pace or more time at each spot, this might feel rushed. This tour suits travelers who love beautiful landscapes, historical towns, and wine. If you’re okay with a day that moves swiftly but offers a lot of variety, it’s a great pick. And if you’re traveling without a car, this organized trip takes the hassle out of planning your own route.

A Deep Dive Into the Experience
Starting Point and Transport
The adventure begins in Siena, with pickup right in front of the Basilica San Domenico at 9:30am. The convenience of meeting at a central location with nearby parking can’t be overstated, especially if you’re arriving by car.
The tour transports you in a comfortable, air-conditioned minivan, which is great for the small group of just 8 travelers. This makes for a cozy, chatty ride, and keeps the journey intimate.
Scenic Drive through the Crete Senesi
Our first highlight is the drive south, where your guide will point out the striking moonscape-like scenery of the Crete Senesi. These gray, clay hills are unlike anything else in Tuscany and make for great photo ops. Passing through this landscape sets the perfect mood for the day ahead—quiet, timeless, and undeniably beautiful.
Exploring Pienza
Next up is Pienza, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a favorite among visitors. The town was literally designed on paper, with Renaissance architecture and a deliberate layout meant to reflect harmony and elegance.
Excellent. So easy to let someone else do the driving. The guide provided great information. Considered the groups’ needs.
Our guide, Marco, is very knowledgeable, personable and friendly. He shared a wealth of information with our group and answered all of our questions. The van was comfortable and Marco made it a very comfortable drive. It was wonderful to see the countryside and views, and have time to explore a couple of the towns along the way. The stop at the dairy farm was amazing – the view is breathtaking and the lunch was delicious. I booked this trip for my adult daughters and I – we all really enjoyed the day and are glad Marco was our host. We would highly recommend this for others looking for a small tour of Toscana!
What a fun day! Our guide, Paolo, was wonderful. His knowledge of the Tuscan hills was extensive. He could answer any questions we threw at him. His driving skills were also impressive. The time flew by. We had a great bunch of travelers in our tour group. So happy to be in a small group (8 travelers.) This was a great way to see Tuscany without renting a car. We drank plenty of wine, had a lovely farm lunch and had time alone to walk around Pienza and Montepulciano, too. It felt so casual, and yet we saw so much. When it was over, I was a little sad because I wasn't going to see Paolo anymore. Take the tour. Ask for Paolo. You won't regret.
According to reviews, you get about an hour here to wander at your own pace, peek inside the Romanesque Duomo, or browse local crafts. As one traveler put it, “lovely Tuscan towns,” and you’ll likely agree once you stroll its charming streets.
The Pecorino Cheese Experience
A real treat is the visit to a dairy farm in Val d’Orcia, where the focus is on fresh, farm-to-table ingredients. Lunch is served outdoors, weather permitting, overlooking the rolling hills. It’s hearty, authentic, and includes a generous tasting of the region’s famous Pecorino cheese.
Guests have raved about how much they learned about cheese-making from the farm’s owner and how delicious the lunch is. One reviewer called it “a wholesome and refreshing lunch based mainly on fresh ingredients produced on the farm.”
Discovering Montepulciano
In the afternoon, the focus shifts to Montepulciano, perched high above the valley. This town’s architecture reveals influences from both the medieval Sienese and Renaissance Florentine periods, making it a visual feast. You’ll enjoy a guided walk around the main square, Piazza Grande, and explore its churches and palaces at leisure.
For those interested, there's a visit to a local winery, where you’ll tour the cellars and sample the renowned Vino Nobile.
Many reviews mention how much they enjoyed the wine tasting, often citing the high quality and the informative nature of the visit.
Free Time and Additional Tastings
After the winery, you get additional free time in Montepulciano—ample opportunity for a second wine tasting, shopping, or just soaking in the views. The famous Bravio delle Botti, a barrel-rolling festival possibly witnessed from afar, adds a lively, if distant, sense of local tradition.
End of the Day
The tour wraps up with a comfortable ride back to Siena, where you’ll arrive at your starting point around 5:30pm. It’s a full day, but the variety of sights, tastes, and landscapes makes it feel worthwhile.
