When you’re planning a trip to Crete, you’ll want activities that offer genuine value and memorable moments—not just another tourist checkbox. After reviewing hundreds of traveler experiences with this SUP tour in Chania, we’ve found something genuinely special happening on the waters of Marathi Bay. We love that this tour welcomes absolute beginners while still challenging experienced paddlers, and we’re impressed by how the guides consistently transform what could be a straightforward paddleboarding lesson into an adventure packed with unexpected delights.

The main consideration is that this tour operates with small groups (maximum eight people) and relies on calm weather conditions, so you’ll want to book strategically and stay flexible. This experience works best for active families, cruise passengers with limited time in port, and anyone seeking a refreshing break from typical beach lounging—whether you’ve paddled before or you’re stepping on a board for the very first time.

This was a top experience of all time for us. Stelios made it great – showed us how to paddle (our first time), took great care and concern for our safety and took pictures of everything. It was a gorgeous day and the water was perfect. It was a nice mix of activities – seeing the cave, doing the mud and cliff jumping (I bravely did!). We hope to bring our kids back to this beautiful island, its people and even do this experience. So worth it!

This was AMAZING! Nick was incredibly patient and very informative! The entire Excursion from beginning to the end was just so wonderful! The water and scenery is other worldly! Crazy beautiful! Erika, our driver picked us up right at the Port, had a sign waiting and then she took us into town instead of returning us to the boat which was great because that old town is not to be missed! Especially the point at the end which is called Venetian Point I believe and it looks like a little town in Italy it is just sunny so definitely go into the town don't skip that!

This was a really nice slow SUP around a bay of about 2km in total. We stopped a few times and went very slowly. We probably could have done a bit more paddling, but it was still nice. We didn't get to swim in the Turtle Hole Cave as the tide was too high, but best to be safe than sorry.

What You’re Actually Getting: Beyond Basic Paddleboarding

Stand -Up Paddleboard and Multi-Surprise Elements Tour in Crete - What Youre Actually Getting: Beyond Basic Paddleboarding

This isn’t your standard “here’s a board, here’s a paddle, have fun” kind of tour. SUPinCrete has built something more thoughtful. The two-hour experience includes hotel pickup and drop-off (or cruise port transfers for those arriving by ship), all paddleboarding equipment, safety gear, bottled water, and something the reviews keep mentioning: a string of surprise activities woven throughout the tour that keep things interesting.

The price point of $89.49 per person represents genuinely solid value when you factor in what’s included. You’re getting professional instruction, transportation logistics handled, equipment provided, and a guide who knows the coastline intimately. One traveler put it perfectly: “This was our favorite activity of our 14-day trip,” and another actually booked the experience twice during their stay. That kind of repeat business tells you the value proposition is real.

The Setting: Marathi Bay’s Exceptional Water Conditions

Stand -Up Paddleboard and Multi-Surprise Elements Tour in Crete - The Setting: Marathi Bays Exceptional Water Conditions

Here’s what makes the location so special: Marathi Bay offers the kind of calm, crystal-clear water that makes paddleboarding accessible rather than intimidating. The water is transparent enough that you’ll see the Mediterranean ecosystem beneath you—sea urchins, native fish, and if you’re fortunate, sea turtles. One reviewer described the scenery as “other worldly” and “crazy beautiful,” and the 360-degree views of imposing rock formations create a dramatic backdrop that photographs beautifully.

The bay’s protected position means the water stays relatively still, which is exactly what you want when you’re standing on a board. This calm environment is particularly valuable if you’re nervous about paddleboarding for the first time. Multiple reviewers noted they were apprehensive beforehand but found the conditions so manageable that their worries evaporated within minutes of being on the water.

How the Tour Actually Unfolds: What to Expect Hour by Hour

Stand -Up Paddleboard and Multi-Surprise Elements Tour in Crete - How the Tour Actually Unfolds: What to Expect Hour by Hour

Your Start: The Logistics That Actually Work

You’ll begin with hotel pickup or cruise port transfer. The guides emphasize clear communication—you’ll receive a message with your specific pickup time and location before the tour. One cruise passenger raved about how “Erika, our driver, picked us up right at the Port with a sign waiting,” and then thoughtfully took them into Chania’s old town afterward instead of just returning them to the ship. The attention to detail in logistics sets the tone for everything that follows.

This was an amazing experience. Our guide, Bobby was so kind and helpful. He was very patient with everyone and their boards were very new. The water was so warm and clear and Bobby kept taking us to different areas so we could see lots of things. Very nice surprises. He took lots of pictures for us also. We really enjoyed this trip the most of all our activities in Crete.

Great experience with an international paddleboard champion. Must be comfortable in water and it will be a ton of fun.

Once you arrive at the meeting point near Sossorides Beach in Marathi Bay, you'll get fitted with your equipment. Each person receives their own stand-up paddle board, paddle, leash, and personal flotation device (PFD). The guides take time to show you proper technique—even if you've never paddled before, you'll be standing and moving within minutes. As one first-timer noted, "Stefano was a great instructor and got us up and paddling within a few minutes."

The Paddling Experience: Paced for Your Level

The tour follows a scenic route along Marathi Bay's waterfront, covering roughly two kilometers total. This isn't a grueling workout—it's a relaxed exploration designed so everyone stays comfortable. One reviewer described it as "a really nice slow SUP around a bay," which is exactly the point. You're moving at a pace that lets you absorb the landscape, spot wildlife, and chat with fellow paddlers.

The guides adjust the experience based on your group's abilities. Beginners get encouragement and patience; experienced paddlers get tips and tricks to enhance their technique. One international paddleboard champion was among the guides, so you know the instruction quality is legitimate.

The Surprise Elements: What Sets This Apart

Here's where this tour earns its reputation. Throughout the experience, guides incorporate unexpected activities that transform the tour from "nice paddleboarding" into "adventure with genuine memories." These have included cave exploration, cliff and rock jumping, mud facials, and swimming in designated spots. One traveler who jumped off cliffs noted, "The group cheered each other on for the rock/cliff jumping. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon."

The "surprise" framing matters psychologically—you're not stressed about a predetermined itinerary because the guide surprises you with each new spot. This keeps energy high and creates those moments that travelers remember years later. Another guest captured this well: "Lots of little surprises, and nothing beats getting into cool water on a hot day."

The Photography Advantage

You won't need to worry about capturing moments yourself. The guides actively photograph the tour and email images to you afterward, which means you can be fully present on the water without constantly fussing with your phone. Multiple reviews specifically praised this—one traveler noted they "could just enjoy ourselves out on the water and not be worried about phones."

Practical Considerations That Matter

Group Size and Personality

With a maximum of eight people, you get that sweet spot where the guide can actually know your name and adjust to your comfort level, but you're not paddling alone. The small size also means the tour feels personal rather than factory-produced. Several reviewers mentioned the guides' friendly, entertaining personalities—this matters more than you'd think when you're spending two hours on the water with someone.

Timing and Weather Flexibility

Tours operate throughout the day, with some departing at 8:30 AM (which one traveler specifically praised for avoiding midday heat) and others in the afternoon. The tour requires good weather, and if conditions turn poor, you'll be offered either a different date or full refund. One reviewer had to skip the Turtle Hole Cave swim because "the tide was too high, but best to be safe than sorry"—the guides prioritize safety over checking every box.

Who Needs to Know About Age Requirements

Children must be at least 15 years old, and they need to be accompanied by an adult. This age minimum isn't arbitrary—it reflects the physical demands of paddleboarding and the fact that some surprise activities (like cliff jumping) require a certain maturity level.

The Value Breakdown: What $89.49 Gets You

Stand -Up Paddleboard and Multi-Surprise Elements Tour in Crete - The Value Breakdown: What $89.49 Gets You

Let's be direct about pricing. You're paying roughly $45 per person per hour for professional instruction, equipment, transportation, and guide expertise. Compare that to what you'd spend renting a paddleboard alone (typically $30-40 for two hours) plus transportation costs, and you're looking at similar money but with instruction, logistics handled, and surprise activities included.

The real value emerges when you consider what the guides bring. They know where sea turtles frequent, which rock formations are safe for jumping, and how to make someone's first paddleboarding experience feel like an accomplishment rather than a struggle. That knowledge and personality are worth paying for.

What the Numbers Tell Us: 554 Reviews and Counting

Stand -Up Paddleboard and Multi-Surprise Elements Tour in Crete - What the Numbers Tell Us: 554 Reviews and Counting

With a 4.9-star average across 554 reviews, and 99% of travelers recommending the experience, you're looking at genuine consistency. The review breakdown shows 525 five-star ratings, 25 four-star ratings, and just four reviews with fewer stars. That's a ratio that suggests the tour delivers what it promises to most people, most of the time.

The reviews also highlight a particular strength: guides named Stefanos, Marcello (or Marselo), Franco, Bobby, and others appear repeatedly with glowing mentions. This suggests SUPinCrete has built a team of people who actually care about the experience, not just guides clocking hours.

Honest Limitations Worth Considering

Stand -Up Paddleboard and Multi-Surprise Elements Tour in Crete - Honest Limitations Worth Considering

A few reviews mentioned wishing for more paddling time and less time on surprise activities like mud facials. One traveler noted, "Could use less time with the 'mud facials' would have enjoyed more time paddling." This is worth knowing—if you're primarily interested in paddleboarding fitness or distance, this tour's emphasis on surprises might not perfectly match your goals. The experience is genuinely balanced between paddling and adventure activities, so know what you're signing up for.

Weather-dependent operations mean you need flexibility in your schedule. If you're visiting Crete for only one day and the tour gets canceled due to wind or rough conditions, you might not have a makeup option.

Cancellation and Booking Strategy

Stand -Up Paddleboard and Multi-Surprise Elements Tour in Crete - Cancellation and Booking Strategy

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund, which is consumer-friendly. The tour books on average 33 days in advance, suggesting you should plan ahead rather than hoping for last-minute availability. Mobile tickets mean no printing required, and confirmation comes immediately upon booking.

Who Should Book This Tour

Stand -Up Paddleboard and Multi-Surprise Elements Tour in Crete - Who Should Book This Tour

This tour works beautifully for cruise passengers with limited time in Chania—the port transfers make it perfectly suited for a port day activity. It's ideal for families with teenagers seeking something active and memorable. Solo travelers and couples looking for a break from typical tourism will find genuine value here. First-time paddleboarders should book with confidence; the guides have perfected the art of building confidence in beginners.

It's less suitable if you're an advanced paddler seeking a serious workout or long-distance paddling. It's also not the choice if you need guaranteed fair weather—you need flexibility for potential rescheduling.
